My Issues with Ohio State Football's Hype

  • Legendary Ohio State Buckeye coaches Urban Meyer and Jim Tressel have voiced their opinion that this Ohio State Football team has the most talented Buckeye roster ever. With Ryan Day upgrading his staff by hiring Chip Kelly to be his offensive coordinator, bringing back multiple NFL players in running back TreVeyon Henderson, wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, defensive ends Jack Sawyer and JT Tuimoloau, and cornerback Denzel Burke, and using the transfer portal to bring in elite players, I can somewhat understand why this opinion was expressed. However, I think it is incorrect. The hype surrounding Ohio State is excessive given their multiple questions at quarterback, offensive line, and the upside they have on their defensive front. I also express my thoughts on Ryan Day's job security and how Ohio State matches up against their three best opponents, Michigan Football, Oregon Football, and Penn State Football. We talk about all of this and more in this episode of College Football with Sam. Make sure to comment so I can interact with you and answer any questions you have!

      A few things to clarify before I work on my next big video:
      1) This is the first year I have ever believed an Ohio State team is overhyped. I still think this team will be elite, but being elite within a season can be much different than being a GOAT team (2020 Alabama would destroy 2007 LSU for example and both won National Titles). I know not everyone is saying this team will have GOAT potential, but clearly this is the public's favorite to win it all and most think they will cruise through the Big Ten.
      2) No, Will Howard is not an automatic upgrade over Kyle McCord and the OL is not guaranteed to be good. Due to staff upgrades (Chip Kelly) and returning experience on the OL both QB and OL will likely improve, but improving may not be enough to win it all, especially with the receiver room taking a step back and Howard's proclivity to turn over the ball. Also, Ohio State did just lose some elite players from last year's team.
      3) The Natty of Bust mentality is non-sensical when you have the talent to win it all every year. Ohio State will win a title under Ryan Day, I just think with his core identity of how College Football is right now they will a elite OL and/or and Elite QB to do it along with the defense that Jim Knowles has built.

  • @JayJay-ku8gp
    @JayJay-ku8gp 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

    Ohio State's biggest problem is just having efficiency. They always have a unit or two that isn't playing great which costs them against better teams. Until they have a team firing on all cylinders they'll mostly likely continue to come up short on a natty
    2019: just weird play calling against Clemson
    2020: not a good defense
    2021: not a good defense
    2022: defense improves but not there
    2023: poor OL play and QB play.
    Efficiency is OSU's biggest weakness.

    • @hollinsd
      @hollinsd 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Had trouble getting the offense and defense playing at a high level at the same time the last three years: '21-'22 D was the primary problem. '23 O was the problem with an inexperienced QB, primarily. Injuries were huge too in the past few seasons. For example, remember Henderson had to sit out for the Peach Bowl? I wonder if he would have made a difference? 🤔

    • @foxbodyblues6709
      @foxbodyblues6709 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      A definite yes. You can see the recruiting results now show how Day has addressed these localized recruiting issues from 2017-2023.
      The largest issue on the 23 team was the QB. He played stiff and scared, unable to see the field as needed.
      An unwillingness to run the QB really hurt the run game as defenses could cheat up because of the lack of a run threat at QB.
      Those days are over. Howard had 9 run TDs with middling talent in 23.
      Howard may get 20 TDs with Chip calling the plays. Don’t forget his likely 35 TD passes.

    I would think about it this way:
    just like how UM only wants Harbaugh’s tenure at UM to be analyzed post CVD and staff turnover post 2020.
    Essentially they want only to be analyzed for their 2021-2023 results, when predicting future records.
    I think Day should be analyzed not for the records/stats achieved until 2023, but by what can be expected now that they have made over the team.
    New (upgraded) OC, new (upgraded) QB, will have great positive affect on the offense, which was the biggest problem with the team in 23.
    This is very similar to when UM started a new and upgraded QB.

    Everybody gets hung up on the whole talent thing and yes you can.
    There is a much greater thing with OSU this year you all seem to avoid.
    This will be Days most experienced team in returning players and depth.
    I think that accounts for more than anything, just like Michigan last year, a lot of experience returned. It's will be played out on the field. To speculate in my thoughts, is that OSU will run, run, throw to stupidly open wide recievers, and their defense will give their offense a lot of opportunities more than CJ and his crew ever got.
    I have never seen this many players return in a long time for OSU, and with talent.

    • @MaizeBlueMichigan
      @MaizeBlueMichigan 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think it really comes down to OSU's defense and QB play. If the Buckeyes field a top 3 defense and Howard can more closely resemble Fields/Stroud than McCord, they can absolutely win a title. However, I want to see Howard be good before I predict the Bucks to win a championship. Definitely possible with their talent, but one can argue that OSU has been the most talented team in the country the last few years, and they haven't won anything of significance. Can't wait to see how this season plays out.
      Edit - experience is huge though, and it's impossible to deny there's lots of it on the 2024 roster.

These lowly 3 stars go to Michigan to be part of a team and develop over 3/4 years............ it's called culture and being part of something bigger than yourself. I don't care if OSU has fifty 1st round recievers......... they are getting beat in the trenches on both sides of the ball by UM...... it's called manball and OSU hasn't shown they can man up when they get punched in the mouth for 4 quarters. OSU and all their 5 stars got beat 3 years in a row by Harbaugh's 3 stars that were developed and buy-in and play for THE TEAM.
    And enough whining with this sign stealing crap........ UM beat Penn St, OSU, Iowa, BAMA, and then Washington to go 15-0 and win the natty AND 13 of UM players got drafted, the most of any college team.............. had nothing to do with the dude video taping games from the sideline with an I-phone who wasn't part of the team the last 10 wks of the season... they were the best team w best players and best coaches. Aa for Penn sts schedule makes them 10 plus win team just when comes play off time sure maybe they beat a crappy ND who played no one either basically in the regular season but upper tier SEC school or oregon/ohio st probably be doom for them in playoffs. I doubt they pull off a michigan from last year is all I mean.

      @@MaizeBlueMichigan Will Howard is a seasoned veteran now. He is playing with way more talent, such as the best rb duo and room, one of the best wr rooms, a veteran and improved oline. The best defense in the nation to take off pressure on the offense and will give them many drive opportunities. Will Howard is now being coached by one of the best qb developers in the sport with Ryan Day and is being offensive coordinated by one of the best who specializes in mobile qb play with Chip Kelly. Day and Kelly who are already familiar with each other blending their pass and run concepts is extremely dangerous for all opponents. With the combination of all I have said Will Howard should be improved drastically , not saying he will be the best, but he will be one of the best college qb’s that doesn’t need to be CJ Stroud, just be routine, consistent, and make good, veteran decisions. If OSU doesn’t win the natty it will be a loss in the title game but I think they do win it. OSU has been unlucky with injuries at the wrong time and I think they have enough luck this time as a team with as talented as they have been are overdo for another national title. The Big 10(18) goes back to back and takes some shine away from the SEC’s dominance

    Two key differences between 21,22 and 23 is that in 23 OSUck held UM in the second half to FGs bit they still scored on every second half passion. OSU lives and dies on their passing game when they are playing a quality opponent (not that they can't run the ball, but that's not their identity). OSU will obliterate anyone lesser than them but will struggle with comparable opponents IMO.

Michigan fans and the media at large make huge deals out of the OL which should be better this year and outside of the Missouri game (where they played a completely different OL than they had all year) improved over the year. If Howard is even equal to Kyle they should be favored to win it all this year. Let’s not get spoon fed Michigan propaganda, this team is loaded everywhere.

    See OSU fans can use whatever excuse they want. You had a month to field more than 22 players for the Mizzou game and you couldn’t. And don’t say the game didn’t matter. It mattered to the players that played. And if you would’ve beat Mizzou you’d be bragging about beating an SEC team. 5-16 all time vs the SEC despite you sucknuts counting wins over teams that weren’t in the SEC at the time. Brady Hart said when he left OSU, he knew Michigan’s culture wasn’t everywhere. That tells me the mentality is still the same and you’re soft. All I’ve needed to know the past couple years is if the mentality is the same and I already know the result of The Game. You beat ND 21-10 in 2022 who ended up being garbage. Then you come back in 2023 and win 17-14. You’re regressing. Not worried about OSU this year. A good team beats a great group of individuals posing as a team every single time.
