Anyways, with that said, this was one of my favorite nationals ever! It's always great spending time with old friends, and meeting newcomers. The crowd was super hyped, and honestly, I think the unjustified hate I've been receiving kinda fueled me to focus harder and make absolute sure that I put on the best show possible. Clearly, there's still a lot of hate coming my way, so you know that means I'll be more motivated than ever to make good content, quality products, and exciting freestyles for all of your entertainment. That's my main priority; to bring joy to people, especially kids. Best believe, I'm gonna keep doing that no matter what!💪

Evan, I'm not feeling the joy. In your "apology" vid you declared hate group members aren't racist at all because they were nice to you. Please think about that. I really wanted to be able to cheer you on and root for you, hoping you would show some integrity and understanding here, and make things right before going on stage at nats and acting like everything was fine and people were not hurt and disappointed. Please consider what it means to be a responsible adult and a role model. This isn't about the "haters."

Evan made his own song and still couldn't figure out how to choreograph tricks to it. Somehow, this lack of music use and choreography translated into high evaluation scores in the choreography section. Evan's choreography score was 4.25, the highest recorded this year at nationals, which Hunter also achieved. Compared to Hunter's second place freestyle, this looks sloppy and hastily thrown together. Evan also scored the highest evaluation in showmanship which nobody else managed to reach, even though he took time out of his own routine on stage to yell at the audience "Come on guys!!!" to force superficial crowd interaction. Hunter is the real champ.

@@hamdogcs and adding to this by urging anyone who is reading these comments to look up the results of 2018 US nationals and check out Evan's winning scores. Compare them to the results for 2023. Then watch the routines back to back. Something should feel very, very wrong.

@@tristanbunke1228 This freestyle received a near perfect score in all of the evals categories when it is clearly worse than many other freestyles in every aspect of the performance which received scores nowhere close to how this scored. This should be much more impactful than a -3 from a swap. The evals were very, VERY biased in his favor. This did not deserve to win.

This wasnt my favorite freestyle of the contest, but I liked this freestyle a lot more than when you tried to publish a viral clickbait video simping for the KKK and then backtracked and issued an "apology" where you learned absolutely nothing and essentially said "sorry im not sorry!" and reiterated how you thought the KKK was nice and racism wasn't real because people were friendly to you. Maybe eval judges were considering that in their rubric?

After looking up this controversy all I'm seeing is that he wasn't simping for anyone but simply said that he performed yo-yo in front of a supposed KKK member. So what? It doesn't mean he's endorsing them. Nagao is not a White person, he's East Asian. His intention may have been to change hearts and minds by letting said person know that it's not logical to be racist.

Gentry was a tech eval judge along with myself and a couple others. We were not performance eval judges. Those were separate.

@@Annonymous2781 wasn't gentry, after world 2019 Netflix made an episode w Evan being the main character and he in fact said he will no longer compete; he later decided that he still could use yoyo to promote his music and vice verca so he completely changed his mind
but true Gentry did retire as well, he wants to focus on promoting yoyo to the world but I believe he will keep that not like Evan
@ Gentry's results were very inconsistent. He won the World title at 1A twice but five years apart in 2014 and 2019. In-between those years he ranked all over the place. He's not up there with the elite players and realizing that is why he retired.
If you notice his recent videos on the 2023 WYYC and/or Mir Kim, he says that he's been reigning world champ for three years and also how he wants Mir Kim to become world champ. It's odd how he never acknowledged Mir's 1A wins at the Online WYYC in 2021 and 2022. Mir was tied for world champ with Gentry Stein before they even met and his was twice in a row and now thrice.

Barefeet is mandatory?
The sheer amount of controversy surrounding the outcome of Evan as the winner is proof that the competitive yo-yo scene needs some kind of objective grading system or objective way to determine who is actually the best in each category. I’m not claiming I know how this would be done but I have high hopes within the next 10 years it will be achieved by AI. Perhaps this super intelligent AI objective grading system will be able to objectively grade past performances proving Evan not the top rank for 2023 and also others.
Trying to put objectivity into this sport is why it is where it is at currently. Including AI in it is a weird and not great idea either. You’re talking about a power ranking and that’s used in smash brothers tournaments but will not work in this because it’s not 1 on 1.
Everyone hating on the judges, why don't you guys step up and become judges? Travel thousands of miles to volunteer your time for free the whole weekend. All I see is a lot of trash talk but I know for sure 90% of you guys will never judge a contest. Much respect to all the judges.

It's funny to see that people who claim to be tolerant, turn out to be the most hateful and childish ones in the comments.
I am kinda ashamed about the current state of the yo-yo community. The constant negativity surrounding the judging system, the insistence on being 'child-friendly' to participate in yo-yoing, and this fake, too good to be true, 'good guy' attitudes adopted by many individuals.
Whether Hunter or Evan deserved first place or not, this freestyle was really impressive. It had a ton of insane tricks, a crowd-pleasing attitude (calling out to the audience, yoyoing while singing, and that sick DNA at the end), and even if it doesn't count in the score, and thats a good thing, he freestyled on his own song. (You must at least respect the dedication)
I am pretty sure a lot of people in the comment doesn't even play yoyo lmao.
Surrounding the controversy, I think that the video with the KKK member was a terrible idea, and it was obvious that it would generate that kind of reaction.
But it wasn't done with bad intent, and I think that right now, Evan has a good mindset about the situation, keeping contact with the community, ignoring some hate, and doing his thing like he did for so many years.
And for those who actually play yoyo, let's not forget why we chose this toy in the first place. I don't believe that what's happening right now wass something we wanted back then.

Regardless, this freestyle wasn't Freebird. Judges want him to win because they think it's beneficial for growing yoyo, and the scores make that clear. Watch the two side by side and tell me this deserved to score as highly on evals.

The issue isn’t that he did good choreography and won, the issue is that he did mediocre choreography and scored higher in both choreography/musicality than most freestyles ever have, causing him to win. These eval scores are higher even than his 2018 freebird freestyle, which this is not even close to in quality/presentation. The community DOES care about the rules, and would like competitive integrity.
@@GoogahgeeHe still wins if they give him 0 in choreography. He won by a margin of 4.64. You can shave off more than 1 point from more than half of whatever evals and he still wins because the next highest score had -4 major deductions.
