It is just as much a questionable institution yet it takes itself to be unquestionable and the church developed apologetics precisely because it took itself to be accountable to reason.

In the end, though, because of the continuity of the Four Humours theory into the Early Modern period, I included it as the most straightforward and provable example of the principle. I'd guess that they used hot spices in the medieval period for the same purpose, but I couldn't find any specific references to that. So I'll concede that it doesn't belong in this section, but I wasn't going to get a chance to clarify it later and tomato/tomato (also not available until the 1500s).
