So refreshing as the minute we talk about accessibility and disability aids extra zeros... A LOT of extra zeros are added on the end so this was fantastic! THANK YOU SO MUCH! I'll be using some of your ideas and showing them to any of my friends too.

Not only as to see how your house is accessible but also since its a European house and i have never seen one before. I had three strokes and had to get several spinal taps which has messed up my back quite a bit. One of those beds would be amazing. I also love the openness but coziness of your house!

I recently been put in a wheelchair due to an accident. I would like to know some specifics:
    1. How do you carry things? For example, the laundry bag - how do you transfer it from downstairs to the actual washing machine?
But also in general, 2 hands are needed to move the chair, I find it almost impossible to carry anything with me!
    2. How do you get ready before and after a shower? How do you take several items with you (clothes, a hair brush, deodorant, cotton tips etc) from where they are?
    3. How far can you roll with the chair outside before you get tired? I am young and (relatively) healthy and need to rest every 15 meters or so.
    4. The baskets are a great idea! Do you put them in your lap when moving around the house?
    5. How do prepare a cup of tea / coffee and transfer is anywhere from the kitchen counter?
    6. Do you do the dishes? Chores around the house?
I have to say that I've been in a state if depression (and admit that I may have been a lilte grumpy and frustrated) for the past month ever since I'm in the chair, and seeing you and your positive energy is really helping me to get out of the self pity mode and to try and adopt a new perspective on things, one step at a time (haha no pun intended)
    Thanks for this video!

TheSummerOf86, first of all I want to empathize with you about your sudden life change. I will say I am able bodied and up until recently volunteered in the rehabilitation centre affiliated with the major hospital in my city. I only left there because the program I was involved in was temporarily closed, I am still with the main hospital though. You underwent a major life change - not just physically, but, mentally as well. It also didn’t happen in a way you had time to get used to. Understandably, you will be depressed, you will also mourn the passing of the life you had, just know that while your new life will be different, the journey through it will be tough going at times and laughter filled, loving most timesin fact I can see your emotions jumping all over the place for a while. You have so much you are going to have to learn, some of which maybe most was already second nature. But you are strong, you have this. You know how I know without knowing you personally, because, you survived the initial accident and I’m sure that wasn’t easy. You have the support of the hospital, your family, your friends and just as importantly your fellow patients, some of whom may develop into deep friendships. Do not push them away, they are invaluable at this time in your life. You will learn the answers to all your questions over time with help from your team that will include your doctors, nurses, occupational therapist, physical therapist, social workers, psychologist or psychiatrist and when you are fully released you will probably need some home care. All of the people I just listed will have your back. When you have had a chance to catch your breath, get used to your new situation and learn all the things you have to, you will start to look into what is available for you depending on your interests and remaining abilities. For instance there are hand peddled trikes or bikes with lower centres of gravity, sledge hockey for both guys and gals and other things. I would certainly wait until your team says you are ready physically for some of the more active.
I have faith in you, I send you virtual, tender, caring, positive hugs.

carrying things: lavrge canvas or shopping bags and bungee cords on both sides of my arm rests. Cheap; inexpensive; available in hardware stores; adjustable by knotting one end to temporarily shorten one; simplicity itself to attach and remove. I also bring one with me , open in my lap, while shopping....fill it up, check out, refill it after paying, remove when I get back to the car...so I cn always put the heavy items on or neat the bottom and bread on top. Tie the straps together so nothing falls out. One lift into the car does it, and no tipped over plastic bags and produce rolling all over the trunk.

Thanks for this video post! And thanks for letting the dog provide some comic relief on the trampoline. I really like your upbeat attitude. I try to be upbeat too. I have a number of health issues, including 2 bad knees and scoliosis in my back. Some years ago I had to start using a couple of canes when I reached the point of grabbing onto walls, counters, and tables when maneuvering around my home. Almost 4 years ago I was able to move from that home into a handicap accessible apartment. It has no stairs, a large step-in shower, grab bars in the shower and by the toilet, and room under the sinks to pull up a wheelchair or, in my case, a wheeled office chair. Some years before I moved here the owners renovated the complex. The halls in the handicapped apartments are a big space in the center of the apartment. Because of this the owners even had these halls set up with more outlets, a phone jack, and a cable port for a TV or computer. That's where I set up my home office. The doorway from the hall to the living room was just an open archway when I moved in, but I had a relative set up a shower curtain on a shower rod in the doorway. I made sure to pick one with a picture on it that doesn't look like it belongs in a bathroom. It allows for some privacy from the living room windows, and also let's me have a different temperature in the hall than is in the kitchen and living room. The flip down shower seat isn't comfortable, so I use it to hold my shower stuff, and I sit in the tub chair that I brought with me when I moved in. The shower controls in the shower are set up to be used by disabled people, so most of my time in there is spent sitting down. A while after moving here I upgraded from 2 canes to a nice rolling walker, which is more helpful than the canes. In tight spaces the canes are still useful, but the rest of the time I use the rolling walker, as it's more comfortable to walk with it. Like most other rolling walker models, mine has a fold down seat with storage underneath. Having a seat when you need it is a big help. Had to go vote recently, and I was able to use my rolling walker on their ramp both going and coming back. Got there about 11am, and the line was already a little way out of the entry door. Everytime the line stopped moving I was able to sit and rest on my walker seat. I really needed that seat feature that day, and I'm so glad that I have such a useful mobility aid. I'd prefer to be in perfect health, so that I wouldn't need such help, but the reality is that I, and many other people, including you, aren't in mint condition, and do need mobility aids. Canes, walkers, mobility scooters, and wheelchairs are a great help to those of us who need them.
Anyway, thanks again for your video. I'm sure the methods you are using to make your life more ergonomic will help lots of people. Keeping the dishware in the lower cabinets is an idea that will help me. I've been keeping most of my dishware on my very long kitchen counter, so that I can reach them while sitting down. This does crowd the counter though. Anything still left in the overhead cupboards I usually only get down when I am coming into or leaving the kitchen, as I am standing then, and can hold onto my walker if I need to. Thanks for your tips. Now I'm going to add rearranging the lower cabinets to my chore list, so that I can put at least some of the dishware down there. Keep making these videos. They are helping people. 🤗

Donna Couch, check into the government (state/provincial and federal), War Amps, your Insurance, your prosthetics supplier, social worker, health care team and anyone else you can think of in that area. Also, think outside the box in that it and a handicap car do not have to be new as long as they meet whatever the current standards are in your area. You will find that most likely both will be significantly less expensive and just as suitable used. Also check with your income tax department for whatever programs are available.

I been in a wheelchair for 3 months now when my yard is not wet it's easy to go in the grass but if it rains then unable to cause will get stuck I have my yard cut regularly cause more easy with the chair on cut grass if grass is lil high n thick makes it harder I'm in the process of having a walkway put in from my porch to the driveway the way my porch is built cause of the door my ramp goes off toward back of my house which is a trailer so having a walkway built from end of my ramp to my car parking pad that way don't have to reschedule things around the rain

Laundry bags have been hugely helpful. Ever since I figured out how to kick one down the stairs (my issues are balance and dyskinesia), I have been able to consistently get my stuff down independently for washing. Getting it back up is another story but on days I'm able, the bags with the backpack straps help a lot so my arms can focus on keeping me safe. Other times I have to ask for help.

We put in a Rev-a-Shelf in each cabinet one month at a time. The cabinets come out as drawers. Even the Ikea recycling bucket can make a difference if you want to put bottles of things. It costs half of what a Rev-A-Shelf costs and is plastic on a metal frame. This is what we put in all the bathrooms to save money and still be accessible to all the things in the cabinet. If you want more ideas, Stone Cottage Adventures has newer ideas from this year for someone with wheelchair use. I really liked your video. Happy New Year!
