  • A little demo and review of the Fender Pawn Shop Mustang Special. These guitars were never production models but supposedly something a guy might have thrown together from parts back in the day. I used no effects or gain channel for this demo.
Strings are Ernie Ball Cobalt 10-46.
Amp is a Peavey Bandit 112 Transtube and the demo is all clean.

This is one of the best demos of the Mustang Special I've seen. It surely deserves more love and likes than it's gotten over the decade. I particularly like how you played in styles appropriate to the pickups selected - Chicken' pickin' at the bridge coil where typically a Tele would be used and mellow jazzy tones on the neck HB position.
Like you, my favourite configurations are pairing either the inner or outer single coils. The outer coils combine the warmth of the neck position with the edgy high end of the bridge for a wider tone spectrum with single coil clarity whereas the inner coils through my Vox pathfinder, to my ear approach the sound of my amplified acoustic soundhole pickup. I'm a bit of a Stones fan so sometimes I like to play it in "Micawber mode" - rear bridge coil with neck humbucker like Keef's famous tele. This is a real sleeper/hidden gem of a guitar. Folks familiar with guitars are never going to mistake it for their preferred Les Paul, Strat or Tele but the Pawnshop Special's so versatile that I think it can get in the ballpark of them all. That's why it's the one I always have within arms reach and carry around to my buddies. I have a businesslike 52 Hot Rod Tele which I love too, but it's a demanding beast that makes me work for the great sounds it delivers. But this is the one I play most in my living room to chill out and relax.

A proper demo clearly showing the different configurations without effects clouding the issue. And enjoyed the playing too. It would be nice to have seen your right hand to see how you were doing some of the parts. Now subscribed!

Great video! I love this guitar and have had it for years but haven't really known what all the options are for and this explained it perfectly

John Sander Thanks for watching. I still have this guitar but I haven't played it for a while. Think I'll break it out tonight!

I think they sound great . I don't really use fuzz but I do use overdrive and high gain with no problems. I think this guitar was made for punk, looks-wise and sound wise, I think you can do practically anything with it.

I really don't know the answer to that. This is the only Mustang I have ever played let alone owned. I like this one, that's all I can really tell you.

I still have it. I had it apart for a while because I was going to order another pickguard for it, but I never got around to it and I missed the guitar so I put it back together. It's still all stock. I really like the guitar and the WRHB's are some of the best sounding humbuckers I have ever played. Get one, you'll like it.

You mean the switch makes a noise? You could try spraying some contact cleaner around the sliding part of the switch, but make sure it won't harm plastic. CRC Brand QD contact cleaner works great. If you mean the amp hums when it's in single coil mode, a lot of thing can cause that.

How do the humbuckers handle fuzz? Would you recommend this for punk/fuzz rock riffing and such?

Why do people always say "It's not a mustang, tele, start because it's got a humbucker"??? I hear it all the time. I have a tele with double humbuckers. It came from fender like that, it says telecaster on the headstock. But I always get the "Dude, nice guitar, it's not a tele though....." My strat is a HSS and I hear the same thing. A mustang is a mustang based on the fact it's a mustang body and says mustang on the headstock. Simple.

Dude, sorry if I missed it in your review, but what year is this model. Is it CIJ or MIM?

I have 2 one like this but mim. Fretboard smells horrible. Possibly too much linseed oil? The USA model is fine but did need a set up. Both did.

FYI those Pawn shop series were never produced in USA. First in Japan then in Mexico.

Very nice review I'm looking for a guitar in the style of Kurt Cobain's fenders, is this a better guitar than the usual mustang? Because I looked them up and on the music store they're cheaper then Kurt Cobains fenders, may also be because of the "signature"...

I use to have this guitar as well. It played and felt great but that fucking switch was in the worst fucking spot. Always hit it and would get frustrated by the damn thing.
