The UK government has just unveiled major modifications to its visa policies, and these changes will have a significant impact on individuals seeking to study or work in the country. Here's a breakdown of the key updates:
Foreign Worker Salary Threshold Increase:
The salary threshold for foreign workers is set to rise to £38,700 as part of the government's efforts to tighten immigration controls. This adjustment is a substantial increase from the previous threshold and is expected to affect those applying for skilled worker visas.
Five-Point Plan for Immigration Control:
The government has introduced a comprehensive five-point plan to reduce immigration. This plan includes prohibiting care workers from bringing their families and raising the minimum salary requirement for skilled worker visas.
Health and Care Visas Update:
Overseas care workers will no longer be allowed to bring family dependants to curb what the government deems as the "abuse of the health and care visa." Additionally, care firms wishing to sponsor visa applications must be regulated by the Care Quality Commission. The government defines dependants as spouses, civil partners, unmarried partners, and children under 18.
Skilled Worker Visa Minimum Salary Change:
The minimum salary threshold for skilled worker visa applications is set to increase by nearly 50%, jumping from £26,200 to £38,700. However, health and care workers will have some flexibility and can earn less before applying for this visa category.
Shortage Occupation List Reforms:
The government aims to overhaul the shortage occupation list to eliminate discounted overseas labor. This involves removing the 20% discount applied to the minimum salary for individuals seeking visas for shortage occupations. The government will also review and reduce the types of jobs listed as shortages.
Family Visas Minimum Threshold Increase:
The minimum threshold for family visas will be raised to £38,700 to ensure that individuals can financially support their dependants. This is a significant increase from the current rate of £18,600 set in 2012.
Student Visas Review:
Following earlier adjustments to family members' entry on student visas, the government plans to task the Migration Advisory Committee with reviewing the graduate route. The aim is to prevent misuse and safeguard the integrity and quality of higher education in the UK.
These comprehensive changes are part of the UK government's broader strategy to manage immigration more effectively and address specific concerns across various visa categories.
