    Supposedly 😮
    I love your videos. I find it incredible to see so much waste, in such a small location.

    I was a Sky installer a couple of decades back and I had jobs in a couple of these camps while they were still in use.
    It was a very bizarre experience. There was obviously significant security to get in the front gate, especially as I was in a van, and I also had to be escorted by a soldier in my van to whichever house I was going to, but once inside they were like entire little towns that didn’t exist on regular maps.

    There's a similar ex army estate in Lisburn, just off the pond park road, great homes, they've been took over by one of the housing trusts and being used for social housing, when they first became vacant over 20yrs ago I had a nosey in a few, seemed a great house, very spacious, I believe Choice housing bought it over..... Interesting video, thanks for uploading 👍

    You’re close with your assumptions but back in 2007 the smaller homes would have housed families where the Soldier was of a lower rank (Junior NCO’s - Non Commisioned Officers), the larger of the homes would have housed families where the serving soldiers were Warrant Officers and Commissioned Officers (those of Senior ranks).
    Single soldiers would have been housed in Single accommodation blocks within the camp (single rooms with shared facilities).
    I know the camp well and its exact location having worked there many moons ago (80’s).
    There’s another abandoned camp in Enniskillen. If you’re interested in it by all means message me for the details.

If you that own them dont want to fix them, then sell them at small fixed prices for other people to fix and enjoy them, but keep investor's out, i house per person or family. Winifred Thompson. @DanEvans-rl2xd 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      As a kid living on this very site back in 1998 (yes I was there for the unfortunate incident) it did have its downsides, the sirens warning us of attacks going off every day, being confined behind 50ft walls, away from all previous friends and family. On the other side of it though, (this may be because I’m Welsh) I attended a local school with local children, we could leave camp if we wanted (provided we weren’t locked down) to go on days out, or just to go shopping somewhere other than the NAFFI, and I can’t recall a single problem with any of the locals, even though we had no right being there, everyone was always lovely. Also what you see in the video doesn’t do justice to just how large the camp was, we’re only seeing a small section of one side of the camp, there was plenty of places for us to go off and play and explore, build dens, swim in the river, climb trees, watch all the helicopters landing, it was very much like a gated village, it had everything you could have wanted there, which is what makes it that much sadder that it’s been left to rot, rather than being used to provide affordable housing, the houses are nothing special, but they were warm, comfortable, reasonably sized, and secure and there were many more than shown in this fantastic video, so whilst it had its drawbacks, especially living there and hearing the bomb go off in Omagh in 98, whilst out playing with friends. The actual experience of living there wasn’t bad at all, some parts were actually really lovely, like being able to explore parts of Ireland, meeting and making friends with Irish people, (some of whom I still talk to now) I think as with all situations like these, they are what you make of them

    • @DanEvans-rl2xd
      @DanEvans-rl2xd 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@stuartbrown8259 as I said in my reply to OP I lived there from 98 onwards for a couple of years, and you are 100% correct, unless camp was on lockdown we were free to come and go, as children we attended local schools, and whilst we were taught to be incredibly vigilant, being aware of our surroundings, always checking our car to make sure no one had planted a bomb etc, never did I or anyone I know experience any hostility from the locals, they were always lovely, and I can’t recall anyone being attacked whilst out and about during my time there, that’s not to say it didn’t happen, only that in my 2 years there I don’t recall any incidents, or any severe enough to remember 🤷‍♂️ I know peoples attitudes towards us were a bit better as I’m Welsh, and there was an inherent distrust of the English, but i believe that was only a small factor

    • @stuartbrown8259
      @stuartbrown8259 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@DanEvans-rl2xd I know what you mean. Myself personally as I mentioned elsewhere, I was stationed in St Lucia Barracks in Omagh, we didn't really go into the main camp and certainly not the pads areas. Maybe the odd occasion when out running. As soldiers, it was always a security issue, checking our cars when leaving home, or being on alert when out and about shopping etc. I was a soldier in the Royal Irish Regiment, Home Service element, so we lived in the normal communities, and just commuted to and from camp. We had to take extra precautions because of that. All my kit and equipment was usually kept at home, and transported in the boot of the car when needed. It was always put in black bin bags for when I needed to get it into the house, to wash it or prepare it. We also had the option of applying for a PPW, Personal Protection Weapon, but that to me was too much hassle. I had young children then, so didn't want a weapon in the house. Was certainly strange times back then.
