    It's pretty amazing the original UT is still the best UT. There were a couple versions that were pretty good contenders, but none have seemed to captured the magic and gameplay of the original.
    Raptor is still one of the best vertical scrollers, and I still regularly go back and play it often.

      I know, they must've nailed the gameplay with the first one (UT), and then just couldn't replicate the perfection.

    In your 1991/1992 video's you had lots of comments saying "I loved all these games!". By 1999, we all knew what genres we liked, due to experience, so now you have comments about singular games!

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames

      True, but also 1991/1992 videos were "the 25 best DOS games", and this is a "10 Years of Early Windows" series, which has many more games covered. Or will eventually, so not all of them are the best, but I try to include only good ones. Or interesting ones, if they're not very good.

    Carnivores 2 - I once read that the map files can be swapped with the ones in Carnivores: Ice Age, so that you can hunt dinosaurs in snow-covered landscapes, or hunt the ice age creatures in jungles. I also discovered that it's possible (though not easy) to get out of the trophy room. I did it by constantly running and jumping into one of the corners of the room. Sadly there's nothing up there, except an endless plane with the same texture repeated infinitely. Still, it was cool to go someplace you weren't supposed to. :)

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wonder if you kept going forward on that endless plane, for like hours, would it eventually brake down or freeze or whatever?

    • @lurkerrekrul
      @lurkerrekrul 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@OldAndNewVideoGames I don't know. To make it easier on my fingers, I wedged a piece of cardboard in the keyboard to hold the forward key down, so all I had to do was steer with the mouse and click the right mouse button (which was mapped to Jump). I suppose once I got up there, I could have just left the key jammed down and left it running overnight.
      I THINK I was also able to get up on the block in the middle of the room, but I won't swear to it, and besides, there's nowhere to go once you're up there. It's too far to jump to the outer wall.
      Of course I'm sure someone could just hack the files to set the gravity to half and make getting up there a piece of cake, but I did it the hard way. :)

      @@lurkerrekrulHard or easy, those glitches are fun to find. :)

    • @lurkerrekrul
      @lurkerrekrul 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@OldAndNewVideoGames Two of the best games for finding glitches in, are the games Thief: The Dark Project/Thief: Gold, and its sequel Thief II: The Metal Age. Both games use the same engine and have the same glitches.
      Players discovered that it's possible to stack virtually any object you can pick up, regardless of its shape, by looking straight down, jumping, and dropping the item below you. Thus gaining height and being able to reach areas that would otherwise be inaccessible. Of course you're limited with this method because you have to be able to pick the items up, and once you stack a few of them, you can no longer reach the others on the ground. One user became very good at stacking crates on a slight offset to build staircases, and even made one using about 100 crates to reach the top of a lighthouse in the second game. The physics in the game aren't realistic enough to make such structures fall over, but it's ridiculous easy to accidentally knock them over.
      The game also reacts strangely when you make contact with certain textures and NPCs while leaning forward, usually propelling you backwards and upwards at great speed. Using this method it's possible to reach normally inaccessible areas of the training level, like the upper levels of the starting room, or the alcoves on the walls of another room. There's nothing in them, but it's fun to go there.
      In the second game (presumably also in the first, but it seems to lack enough items to make it work) players found that you can "levitate" using identical copies of an object, like flares. As I recall, you look straight up and drop the item, and it lands on your head, then you jump, and your body gets stuck on the object in mid-air. Then you repeat this. After dropping the third item on your head, but before you jump, you look down and pick up the first item you dropped. You can keep repeating this until you reach the desired height. Apparently it only works with identical items, and it is VERY easy to fall if you don't do it exactly right. People speculated that it might be possible to move forward as well, but I never had any luck doing that.
      There's a specific glitch in one level of the first game, where you look through a small opening in the back of an abandoned church to see what's going on inside for a later level. If you crouch, back into the opening, and jump, you will get popped inside. However, since the interior isn't finished in this level, you're then stuck with no way to get back out.
      Finally, I had a funny glitch happen to me in the second game. Since these are stealth games, there's an indicator of when you're hidden in shadow. You can also knock NPCs out with a club, however it only works if they're not aware of you. If an NPC hears you, but can't find you after a few moments of searching, they will say something like "Guess it was nothing..." and return to their patrol. In one level, I was in a brightly lit room, but there was a tiny shadow against the wall. Logically it shouldn't have been possible to hide in it, but the HUD claimed that I was completely hidden. Soon, a guard walked into the room, and I raised the club, ready to strike him. When he was right in front of me, he suddenly stopped and turned to face me. He was just inches away and I instinctively released the club, striking him on the head. He stood there for a couple seconds, then turned back to his patrol, muttering "Must'a been rats..." which is one of the lines they use when not finding the source of a noise. I guess I gave him a concussion. :)

    Omg. 1999. Where to even start?
    Unreal Turnament. When are we gonna have a community eavning and play that game??? When i was taking my traders education i got to use a CNC Cutter, i then created the unreal logo in AutoCAD and cut the logo out in some metal plating. It looked incridibly sick, i made 3, one i kept and two where sent to random people on Reddit. I suck at the game, but i love it so much.
    Re-Volt i used to play with my Dad together with Warcraft 2. I have so fond memories of Re-volt. And the name choice “carnival” lives rent free in my head as the cheatcode that unlocks all cars.
    Lastly i want to tell a story regarding worms amageddon. I was at a convention last sommer. And as with all conventions i always hide in the gaming room with all the classic systems. Well, i had brought my laptop, and on it was this version of Worms, i was playing it with a random dude, and a kid, maybe 14 came up and asked about the game. Me, the dude and the kid played worms for like 3 hours and he loved it. It is amazing that such an old game still can amaze even a young generation.

      Oh man... Well, imagine having a game, that's cursed, and the curse makes you play it for at least 6 hours each time you turn your PC on. So whenever you wanna play something, anything, you gotta go through 6 hours of this trash first. What's worse, it's a bit like Big Rigs, so no rules or physics apply to it, and it's just a car with a demonic being inside. Creature that you cannot take your eyes off, even if you wanted to, for the whole straight 6 hours, blinking is not an option either. The car picks a random direction and speed every time you press any key, and you have to press them all the time, taking no longer breaks that a second before each press, or otherwise the curse gives you a violent and fiery diarrhoea, while still keeping you at your PC having to complete the 6 hours run of the game, before you can do anything else. That's how I imagine playing a game about her. In fact, it may be less drastic than meeting her in person. xD

    Worms Armageddon was one of my dream games as a kid and I finally got to play it may years later on my laptop, while temporarily living in my parents's pantry while the rest of the apartment was being redecorated. And the game was well worth the wait! :) Great in single-player and even better in multi-player. That's also definitely a good game for silly names.
    I have heard of some of the other games and will check some of them out. Planescape and Re-Volt seem really cool. Regarding Disciples, if the troops can't move and you accidentally end up with short range fighters just out of range from the oponents, do you have to resort to insult swordfighting, but without the swordfighting? "You fight like a mountain goat" is a good one I heard recently :P

    Driver! Come on, what a game for it’s day! Everyone who’s plaid it hates the opening “driving test” but once you’re out it was incredible for it’s day. The realistic (for the time) physics blew everyone away & it’s a classic for a reason. I played it first on the PS1 & loved it but I have it on my PS VITA through the virtual console & the opening “driving test” is disappointingly pretty much impossible with the VITA’s controls.
    The original UT made arena shooters a thing & whilst it’s not my thing you have to respect what they created.
    Funny thing (& I’m not kidding) I know Carnivores 2 but don’t remember the first game at all? Could be because I’m not a fan?
    Re-Volt! Let’s goooooo! I love it on PC but I played it first on the N64, where it was fantastic, one of my favourite games on the system.
    In spite of the unhealthy amount of time I spent playing the original Worms with my best mate growing up we didn’t get in to the sequels, in spite of their reputation. Partly because single player isn’t what makes the games good.
    I like Raptor & honestly I can see people appreciating a Windows version, making it easier to get running but in ‘99 I was still using Win 98SE, which made running DOS games easier.
    I do agree 1999 was a great year. Even the games I haven’t commented on were excellent for those who are in to that sort of thing. Unreal Tournament was *massively* influential, introducing people not only to arena shooters but also to online gaming as a concept & yes there were games before it but UT is the one that made it a thing for so many more people.

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You know, I though that I was the only one hating the driving test passionately. It was such a terrible stop gap. Way too difficult. And I get it was supposed to prepare you for what's to come, but arguably, the game ahead of it was much easier than the test itself was.
      Re-volt is fantastic, and it looks as good today as it did back then. Cause it never aimed to be realistic.

    As much as I love your videos, I profoundly disagree with the way you categorise UT; for me it was a superb offline solo shooter. The enemy AI - the subtle differences between the skill levels - allowed me to have a most superb experience while I was at University sans internet connection. To categorise UT as you do, deliberately omitting the bots, is to miss a wonderful experience in itself. My friends and I would 'hotseat' UT against the AI until late into the night and have a blast.

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      First of all, thank you! :) Secondly, of course you can disagree. What's more you may be more right than I am. I am a very specific kind of a gamer, and I have very specific gaming preferences. And FPS games, especially with the bots (same as sports titles or RTSes) are not really my jam. Sure, I've played a lot of them, but most prefer them as single player experiences. And as much as I can try to be objective a lot of time, I'm only a friendly neighbourhood AI, and sometimes I let my (totally artificial) emotions take over. ;) Additionally, one of my most fun experiences of mid-90s was a game called Mordor Depths of Dejenol, which most gamers would classify as boring and fugly crap. Now, does it change how I feel about it? Nope, not in the slightest. :)
      If I accidentally gave myself up as an AI, I was obviously joking. I'm a human, and as all humans I do address myself as "human", it's only human to do it after all. ;)
