"The Secret War" a British documentary series from the 1970's, has an episode explaining how it works, an interview with one of the technicians who defused a mine, and the scientists who developed the countermeasures explaining how they did it

Look up degaussing ships to explain how they were protected against magnetic mines.

If I understand correctly, what you said about the mechanism of the magnetic mines is just a simplified version, so yeah, you were correct.

    Spoiler alert!
These magnetic mines were dropped in relatively shallow water, In November 1939 a German magnetic mine was dropped on mud flats in the Thames estuary, it was defused and the intelligence gained led to two countermeasures being developed by the British, the first was the "Double L Sweep" which used a heavy pulsed current between long cables towed behind two wood-hulled ships to generate a strong enough field to blow up mines within that area. The second is called "Degaussing", a ships' hull concentrates the earth's magnetic field (N-pole down), applying a sufficient reverse field for a short period of time leaves hull magnetized in the opposite direction making it undetectable for a time.

The words " lest we forget" is the verbal way of remembrance but the visual footage of what our grand and great grandparents witnessed and experienced is the only way to project their mistakes and by deleting or blurring these factual events only enables those who thirst for power to get away with these types of atrocities during our life time , deleting the past does not help our future , 98% of soldiers don't want to go to war , nobody wants to die , so please don't delete stuff anymore as it is against everything the people of that time actually fought against.

War does show how a small elitist politically motivated leadership can manipulate it's people under arms to commit the most horrendous acts or be punished for not going through with orders .Then when one has obeyed once other acts can become the norm. That is not to excuse but the logic followed through would mean a whole regiment refusing orders as did the French during WW1 though even that can be stopped by a few executions of the regiment . Strangely shown in the film Paths of Glory. Could it happen today ? A study of Ukraine could help perhaps.
