Richard Raffan makes a depth drill - useful when turning bowls and boxes.

You see me re-purpose an old tool handle as I make a depth drill. A depth drill is used to set the depth to which you want to hollow when turning a bowl, box, or vase.

I watched Richard use this technique for a while and when I made one I made a handle that was slightly triangular to be able to grip it better. Also notched the drill similar to his in roughly 1/2 inch increments

Certainly a useful tool. I don’t like using a depth hole as the hole sometimes causes me to get a catch, probably don’t go slow enough when approaching centre of bowl.
I use a rule and measure depth of cut. Haven’t made a funnel yet with this approach.

You don't go into the details of the drill bit and I assume that a standard HSS metal-working twist drill does the job well enough. Any thoughts, however, about the form of the tip and type of flute, etc?

Standard metal-working twist drills do the job, but I also use small gouges as you see in many of the videos. I've never measured the drill bevels, but have used a variety of flutes, all of which work well. I've no more books underway other than a few notes on my life as a turner - few people learning the craft seem to be interested in reading books whilst there's so much information free on TH-cam.

It does, but sanding with the grain does a better job.

Some epoxy would ensure the drill stays in the handle, and also that the handle gets thrown out when the drill is too short to be useful

It's used for drilling out the center of the blank before you hollow it out. Having the center drilled out make judging the hollowing depth much easier. Raffan has many bowl turning videos where he uses this technique.

Must be about 120mm. It's a standard drill that's been in use a year or two, so slightly shorter than new.
