Outer Wilds is one of the most unforgettable experiences I have ever had with a video game. It is super unique and you can only experience it once. The soundtrack makes me super nostalgic for when I played it and I cannot hear "14.3 Billion Years" without tearing up.
Unfortunately my experience with this game wasn't playing it, but instead watching (Nerd³, if you're curious). Despite that, I have such fond feelings for this game, and ESPECIALLY the soundtrack, that shit hit me hard. It's a beautiful game, and one of my favourites for sure. (I haven't watched the DLC though, I'm hoping to play through that myself, eventually.)
Brother, I came here to see his reaction to that very song. I listened to that song at the climax of a mushroom trip when I was like 18 and since then it has been (to me) the musical incarnation of the process of life. It makes me so emotional.
You're right: It's a great soundtrack you can enjoy on its own, but the game is honestly one of the most magical experiences I've ever had playing a video game.
Outer Wilds music has such an emotional impact for me. This game was… just a phenomenal experience. And the less you know going in, and the less help you get along the way, the more it really hits home. Definitely a top 3 game I want to forget so i can experience fully over
29:55 "insecure drift, with little sparkles of hope, and then at times pulling you into some kind of an abyss." It's amazing how good of a job Andrew Prahlow did that he can convey what the game is about solely through its soundtrack, with next-to-zero context on when or why these pieces play. You hit the nail on the head with that description. You asked if it was like Journey, that's a great comparison. Outer Wilds is a narrative/mystery/exploration game. You're a newly minted astronaut about to take their first voyage into space. If I say much more than that, it gets into spoiler territory REAL FAST, because there are no gear unlocks in the game, only knowledge unlocks.
This soundtrack will never fail to put the largest smile on my face. In a sea of impactful video game soundtracks, this one truly stands above the rest. It’s not only the quality of its compositions but the context and emotional impact that they provide after you’ve played the game.
WOOO!!! I am very happy for you to listen to this. This is game is my favorite of all time, thank you for sharing your thoughts. I actually think you could try playing it some time its pretty fun to watch other people's reactions to it.
Not sure if this contains the music from the Echoes of the Eye DLC for Outer Wilds, but that DLC has music that somehow surpasses the base game. Either way, love this games OST and can’t wait to finish the video.
fun fact about the banjos in some of the songs; there are 2 banjos, one in each ear left and right. one banjo is the original recording from like 9 years ago when the game was in development and the other banjo track is the most recent recording. this was to tie the music into the game theme of " look how far we've come" its pretty neat.
I'll be twenty this year, and I've been gaming for as long as I can remember. I can say with full certainty that Outer Wilds is the best game I have ever played. It is a once in a lifetime experience, and unfortunately, due to how the game works, you will never be able to truly replay it. It's almost like it left a space in my heart that can never be filled. Though it probably won't leave as big of an effect on you, it's still amazing and absolutely worth playing.
It's impossible to listen to this stunning soundtrack without feeling the emotion. I beat this game years ago but the music still soothes my soul and moves me to tears
Outer Wilds is one of those games you wish you could erase from your memory so you can experience it all over again. Getting used to the loops. Exploring new areas. Figuring out quantum puzzles. The moment of realization about what you have to do, planning it out carefully and then the last voyage. There is one song in particular that I like that is not directly on the soundtrack but can be found on youtube. It's Travelers (All Instruments Join). Beautiful arrangement.
I enjoyed your reaction, curiosity, and commentary to this soundtrack more than any other reaction video of it I've seen. And I'm only half way in. Subbed, thank you.
Outer Wilds is my absolute favorite game ever, I'm not sure how anything will ever top this for me, it's just complete brilliance... the credits still get me emotional. And now we must go through life watching let's plays to feel a fraction of that spark again. I will honestly just listen to the soundtrack or watch other people play OW while I play a different game. lol.
Sorry to double comment, but I'm nearer the end of the soundtrack now, and I think a few things are really fascinating. The composer like, eases you in with some really pleasant bluegrass inspired acoustic banjos and guitars and that sort of thing.. then the soundtrack sort of transitions to some really difficult, demanding electronic shoegaze, which very nicely mirrors your transition into exploring the big scary science thing that is space.. and then at the end it rewards you for that hard work with some more really pleasant bluegrass and carefully merges in some of the electronic shoegaze to complement it. You master space, and you turn it into your campground. So enjoy the music and roast a marshmallow, you earned it.
I would describe Outer Wilds, at it's core, is a knowledge-based progression game. Were you start a brand new save of the game, but with the knowledge you would have by the end of the game, you could complete the game and see credits in 5-10 minutes. Because of this it is imperative to avoid any kind of spoilers if possible so as to not ruin the experience if you have the intention of playing it.
Surprisingly a space game I played recently also had a lot of banjo. The game was “Hardspace: shipbreaker”, but the music used the banjo for more of an americana style.
Wow, didn't expect Outer Wilds. The OST has a special place in my heart, not because it is astonishingly complex or wowing, but very simple, atmospheric and combined with the experience that is playing this game it's unforgettable. I still use the End Times 15:26 as my alarm every single morning to go to work. And the game itself, is THE game of all time. Definitely a must experience, it does so many things right and challenges the expectation of what a game is.
I'm just sad that "Travelers (All Instruments)" didn't make it into the playlist, at least that I heard. I know it's not on the official OST, but still my favorite overall track produced from the game and just builds on the overall theme for the characters.
I really hope you play outer wilds, the soundtrack with the game is one of the best experiences you can get in a game, and its not a super skilled game so it should be easy for you to get into
I haven't played outer wilds all the way through, but the general aesthetics is "if space camp was a video game" the soundtrack nails this perfectly. It's homely and woodsy, while also provoking that feeling of exploration and discovering the unknown. The visuals and the soundtrack compliment each other perfectly Edit: I've been listening to your hollow knight video on repeat for the last couple weeks. It's nice to listen to good music and commentary from someone who can really appreciate the intricacies of the arrangements. Also, I'd like to hear you react to some game soundtracks by Mike Morasky, particularly the Team Fortress 2 and Left for Dead 2 soundtracks. Both of these were arranged for an orchestra, and have some really killer brass and saxophone parts
After the opening section the game let's you explore it's solar system pretty much freely for most of the game. Progress in this game is not determined by levels or even really a predetermined narrative path, but by how much you learn about the game's world. Harder areas to get to are that way because you need to put more of what you have learned or figured out together to get there. This makes the game really hard to talk about to people who haven't played it before. Also the soundtrack for the Echoes of the Eye add-on/DLC/expantion is really good as well. My favourite composition from the whole game (Elegy for the Rings) is on there.
Great reaction & analysis. If you're interested in doing more full ost reactions like this I highly recommend the ost of Disco Elysium. Many gorgeous pieces in that game performed by British Sea Power.
They might have answered this in the rest of your stream but the gameplay of Outer Wilds involves traveling to different places and exploring them and with a few exceptions it is all pretty seamless, and each place has its own music. This means that the music tends to fade in and out and even blends together sometimes as you go from one place to another.
Outer Wilds' gameplay is like, fancy 3D Lunar Lander, almost, with some first-person platforming and relatively realistic physics. It's an utterly fascinating game though and I think if you get the hang of the controls you'll have a blast
Such a fantastic game and soundtrack. Love seeing others experience it. Hope to see a video pop up reacting to "deep stone lullaby" from destiny 2 soon..phenomenal track
Bit late to the party but loved this! Outer wilds is by far the best game I’ve ever played, and I’d say it is the true definition of a game. I can’t recommend enough that you give it a shot when you have time! Cheers mate
Yes. Play Outer Wilds. It is by far the greatest game ever made, because its story and gameplay are so intertwined that only a game could tell its story.
i absolutely love this soundtrack. its spacey enough to be strange and outside our "normal" but still warm enough to feel human. its "down home space age" sounding to me.
Love Outer Wilds. I'm always wanting to recommend it to people who don't play games, because the experience is unique and special and would sell non gamers on the idea of games being important, emotional works. Unfortunately, I think it has a huge barrier to entry in its controls. I have been playing games my whole life and I struggle with the controls a lot. Not that I think the controls are bad; they are pretty good and are the way they are for a reason. But expectating someone who is unfamiliar with a controller in general to pick up Outer Wilds and enjoy it... It's hard for me to imagine. Still, a phenomenal game with one of my favorite OSTs ever.
People who don't play much games usually also prefer playing games with friends. I recommend couch sessions where you can take over the controls when they struggle, it won't be the same experience but it won't be any less of one
Just in case you heard the exact same sound as we hear in the video: for some reason, there is a reverb throughout the whole music, but not your voice, that is not there in the soundtrack. For most pieces, it works with the vibe, but is probably not intended. Which just means you can hear these "for the first time" when you encounter them in the game! :D
Definitely a recommended game to play. I'd hold it up as a true work of art, equal to any. Right up there with Disco Elysium. Likely won't get anyone to tell you what Outer Wilds is exactly though. It's an unwritten rule that it can't be revealed, only played.
It's unfortunate that the playlist was very out of order, and it seemed to be more echo-y than the original. Did you play a TH-cam video of someone who just took all the songs and put them in 1 video?
I've watched countless playthroughs of the game, but never listened to the soundtrack on its own. All of the musical ideas, and every thought that drifts through one's mind as they listen, is a representation of the ideas a player has as they play. A theme repeated for slightly too long, a hint at unknown malice, a build with no resolve. Even the change in theming and instrumentation between songs as the soundtrack progresses is represented in the player's progression through the game. It isn't just an accompaniment for the game, or background noise to the world. This soundtrack *is* the player, experiencing the game for the first time, translated to the language of music.
I haven't watched through, but there's some kind of bad doubling effect going on in the music source audio at the beginning of this video, as if two copies of the music are being played on top of each other with a bit of delay. edit: yeah it's happening in the whole video, but it's never on _your_ voice, only on the music audio.
I assume that if you had noticed this at the time you were originally listening you would have done something about it, so it must be some kind of effect in post, or has something to do with the audio recording sources being different.
There are no bosses, no items, no leveling. You progress based on your own knowledge while exploring a solar system in peril. Heavily based on quantum mechanics.
Dude, play Outer Wilds. It will leave a mark. The less you know the better due to the nature of the experience, so recording your sessions instead of livestreaming them will avoid spoilers. Depending on how it makes you feel you may even just want to enjoy it on your own time without any form of audience, but either way it's incredibly worth it. It's difficult to recommend enough without becoming off-putting, so I'll leave it there
please, please listen to ARK Abberation and Extinction main theme, they're both beautiful journeys end and past lives are also amazing you listened to the king titan bossfight music but it isn't that good compared to these in my opinion
Outer Wilds is one of the most unforgettable experiences I have ever had with a video game. It is super unique and you can only experience it once. The soundtrack makes me super nostalgic for when I played it and I cannot hear "14.3 Billion Years" without tearing up.
I love you're covering this music. But watching that music to another game. It's like listening to a movie score and watching another film.

My man over here listening to the entire Outer Wilds OST while the Eye of the Universe is casually hanging on his wall in the background
Make sure nobody spoils Outer Wilds for you, don't let chat tell you how to solve mysteries or it'll ruin the experience.
(59:42) 14.3 Billion Years, you're welcome
Ha. Thanks.
15:25 It's been over a year since I finished Outer Wilds. This _one note_ still makes me panic.
I use it while I'm studying, it increases my reading speed by 50%
@@laird3789 lollllllllllllllll fr
I use final end times as alarm sound... It never has time to actually start playing.
You're right: It's a great soundtrack you can enjoy on its own, but the game is honestly one of the most magical experiences I've ever had playing a video game.
Just hearing this soundtrack makes me start crying all over again! What a perfect game and experience
The violin solo near the end of 14.3 Billion Years always gets me. 😢
Outer Wilds music has such an emotional impact for me. This game was… just a phenomenal experience. And the less you know going in, and the less help you get along the way, the more it really hits home. Definitely a top 3 game I want to forget so i can experience fully over
Most of the tracks in this game are tied to locations rather than events, so that is part of why they sound so ambient. Great reaction!
11:11 "I would love to know what's going on in the game during that one" oh man it's one of the most beautiful moment in the game...
Outer Wilds my beloved. Very excited to watch this.
This game absolutely blew my MIND when i played. May have shed a few tears, too... Literally, the soundtrack to the end of....Everything....
Also the main tune to this album is my phone ring tone lol.
The power of these compositions wow! When the track "Space" came on he instinctively was driven to fly around and explore. Phenomenal!
Eso sonó realmente hermoso❤

The last 10 minutes or so were all earlier drafts of songs you heard earlier in the playlist, which is why it seems to end without much fanfare.
It's impossible to listen to this stunning soundtrack without feeling the emotion. I beat this game years ago but the music still soothes my soul and moves me to tears

Like someone else who reacted to this soundtrack said "When was the last time you heard a banjo?". All in all, a great OST.
Surprisingly a space game I played recently also had a lot of banjo. The game was “Hardspace: shipbreaker”, but the music used the banjo for more of an americana style.
Nice, like the Eye of the universe in your background

I would love to watch u play outer wilds, its one of my favorite games ever
You should definitely play The Outer Wilds as well as listen to the soundtrack to the expansion. The soundtrack is also done by Andrew Pahlov.
this specific mandella effect pisses me off
its just outer wilds
there isnt a "the"
Yes. Play Outer Wilds. It is by far the greatest game ever made, because its story and gameplay are so intertwined that only a game could tell its story.
This fits because the landscapes in Minecraft are similar to OW. Play it. It's an emotional journey like no other.
YEAAAAAAAAHHHHH
i absolutely love this soundtrack. its spacey enough to be strange and outside our "normal" but still warm enough to feel human. its "down home space age" sounding to me.
29:59 you described the game perfectly right there
Funny how he digs into the void in creative mode, but doesn't even care that he died because the music is so good.
I recommend you to listen to the Satisfactory OST ! This OST is just so peaceful and ambient

I'm pretty sure that's just the way his audio is being recorded. I definitely hear doubles. Listen again to when he respawns, it clicks twice.

The fact that these two games came out in the same year is crazy
I hope you'll do Black Mesa soundtrack also. The soundtrackpart named " Xen" is fricking MIND BLOWING
42:32 Its crazy beacause at this point in the game, it is actually something found, though, you don't know exactly what lies there.
Hey Geebz-- just wanted to let you know your chapter markers in the video are currently incorrect. (:

It's unfortunate that the playlist was very out of order, and it seemed to be more echo-y than the original.
