This is the first time I ever played on the hardest setting, and not being very good at video games I was fighting tooth and nail to get to the end. Hearing those damn splicers running around and only have 4 bullets gave me an ulcer. Best gaming experience I ever had.
I remember quiting smoking back in 2008-2009 maybe and with the extra money I saved, I bought Crysis 1 in a beautiful metal box, Bioshock 1 also in a beautiful metal box and Fallout 3 sadly no metal box ^^ but Fallout and Bioshock will always stay in my memory and heart for the best games I have ever played.
idk if someone else pointed it out, but in the original bioshock patch, saving the little sister wouldnt give enough currency to buy 1 power, while killing one of them would give you enough to buy one, maybe two powers.
so many memories .. I didn't play System Shock series, so this title was for me the first proof that also a shooter could tell a nice story .. mindblowing lore and beautiful artistic design 😎
Just finished another play through last night. I’m pleasantly surprised by how well the game holds up! It’s not perfect but it’s dang close! The world, atmosphere, characters, dialogue, weapons, plasmids, voice acting. So good!
Really love this game. Just starts making less fun when you have to change into a big daddy. Love the crossbow and it's trapwire. And the invisible perk. Make a big daddy run after you. Than run around the corner and stand still. So he can't find you.
5:37 To add to that: Bioshock has more of an inverted difficulty curve. The initial levels, on Survivor in particular, tend to be the hardest or most challenging, because your arsenal is still very limited. The more weapons, upgrades and plasmids you find, the easier it gets to respond effectively to anything the game throws at you. Meaning that even on Survivor, the final levels aren't too much of a problem, even if you deactivate the revive mechanic.
I was midway through the game on hard difficulty before I noticed the many explosives you can throw at enemies with telekenisis. A few of those can take down a big daddy
BioShock 2 and BioShock Infinity really did a great job shoring up the weaknesses of the first, while still having great stories. You will definitely enjoy them if you liked this one.
@@Walamonga1313 have to agree here. Imo, original Bioshock has the best story, Bioshock 2 has the best combat, and Infinite has a better balance of both while also falling short of truly excelling at either.
I thought the ending where you are dying and the little sisters who are your adopted daughters are surrounding you with their families was very touching.
While there was no significant mechanical or gameplay impact from saving or harvesting the Little Sisters, it did not feel underwhelming to me when you get the good ending and see the impact you had on their lives. One of my favorite endings to a game ever. Not to mention saving these children were little bright spots in an otherwise grim world. Also there's the role playing aspect; you can look at harvesting or rescuing from a purely mechanical point of view, or look it as you're making a moral choice to sacrifice or not an innocent child. And that moral choice is reflected in the ending you get.

11:19 I think in every playthrough I only ever found enough to stations for three full weapon upgrades. Thanks for dispelling that. I'm surprised that the Good Ending didn't hit you in the dad feels. Onward to 200k. All glory to the algorithm.
The only real downside to the Bioshock games in my experience is that even on the hardest difficulties, the beginning of the games(first 20% or so) is the only section that feels truly challenging. Maybe Infinite is different, I never played 1999 mode, but played Burial at Sea on the hardest difficulty. While it was a significant challenge, I honestly hated the way it was designed. The entire reason it was difficult was purely due to lack of resources and not very much to do with level design or enemy placement, etc. There are some minor shortcomings like you mentioned with the choices yielding different endings and having little impact outside of that, but Bioshock is definitely a classic and deserves to be mentioned in high regard. Glad you liked it, thanks for the review.
Good video! About the differences you get depending on how you decide to deal wth the Sisters, there's one plasmid called Hypnotize Big Daddy which may change a good chunck of how you deal with those Biggies. As a player who every now and then decides to go back to BioShock, I do believe a good way to experience the game, even on a first playthrough, is by playing the game on the hardest difficulty with Vita Chambers disbled. I do feel like NG+, as fun as it is, removes a lot of the tension you get, especially early on.
There's a glitch that still works to get the hardest difficulty achievement. You can play through on easy, and as soon as the cutscene starts after the final boss, change the difficulty to hard.
In the Dishonored video, I mentioned Bioshock and Metro. Wasn't aware at the time you have a bioshock + bioshock 2 review up. Just watched this one and on to 2 next.
Hey Mortim, long time fan first time caller. I really enjoy a lot of the videos. It's hilariously serendipitous that you decided to 100% this 15 years old game. Bc I would always hear about BioShock and never played it myself. Saw it on sale for the remastered collection for $8-9 and literally finished it last night. Though I didn't 100% it, I do feel I've got all I could gather from it. And Overall I can definitely see how appreciated it could be for it's time in '07-'08.
The story is well enough with a bait and switch. But they do a phenomenal job of setting the scene. As the world feels believable even though it's quite ridiculous. The gameplay(for it's time) still holds up well enough, there's no real weight to combat, and depending on how you want to play you can definitely be overpowered in most encounters. As for the final Fontaine fight I went into it nearly fully stocked and finished him with tons of ammo and health/hypos left. I was kinda expecting more for the final boss.
But it's funny how the hacking goes from somewhat enjoyable to downright exhausting. After one game of pipes your like "oh pipes", "pipes is fun". After twenty games, "man I wish there were not as many turrets." After fifty," no more!"
Don’t forget! Bioshock got several game of the year awards in 2007. Excellent game for the time and it’s still playable today. Controls weren’t as fluid back then. Gears of war and portal were two other games that came out in 2007 that were absolutely incredible as well. Bioshock is a must play in my opinion.
Been watching for a long while now but never login to youtube. Your content has been some of the best in gaming. Your approach has been great and it warms the heart seeing your recent BOOM it seems in subscriber count. I have been really enjoying the addition of the steam deck compatibility in your videos as well especially since the platform can be very much hit or miss on yellow and below ratings. Either way keep up the great work and I cant wait to see more of your content!
I've been asking for you to do this one for a while thank you for reviewing it. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I know you have other games to play but you should put BioShock 2 and infinite on the list for sometime in the future both are good.
I actually just played through the series for the first time recently. I hope ya enjoy bioshock 2 as much as I did and I hope you enjoy bioshock infinite way more then I did cause I didn't even finish it lol.
You said it yourself at the beginning when you spoke about "impact". There are games I myself am reluctant to play today that at release were regarded by those playing it then among the best games ever made. Time isn't always kind, especially to certain types of games. When Bioshock originally released it had a massive influence on me as a gamer. The issue with this particular game is, there are aspects of it that, lets say haven't aged like a fine wine. That said, for a game that is 16 years old - it holds it's own. Still, it would be a disservice to the game to not reiterate how impactful it was to me when it released. I wish you could have played it then. Although I have no intention of going back to play it any time soon, it stands as one of my favourite gaming experiences.
This game was an absolute experience the first time i played it. Sure, the gameplay is a mixed bag (damage spongey enemies), and it was improved in Bioshock 2, but the atmosphere is superb in the first game.
Great game. Although just once in my life I'd like to hear "completely untroubled development, everyone got along, the original vision is the one you see on the screen, and everyone was happy". 😂
Hello Mortis 16 years on and still a Solid Game I love the Lore especially Ryan and Objectivism from Ayn rand this Game really changed my life with Mass Effect and Dead Rising 2007 was glorious year for the Xbox 360
Never played a Bioshock game despite my friends telling me to do it becsuse of the story quality. I suck at first person shooters, but I may give this remaster a chance. Thanks for the hard work, hugs
Even back in 2007, the combat felt clunky and mostly disappointing. That aside, where the game excels and is most worthwhile is in its unique setting, atmosphere and the twists and turns of the story. For that alone, I consider it still worth playing today, although I typically recommend setting the difficulty to Easy to make the enemies less damage-spongey and thus make the lackluster combat feel like less of a slog.
I also enjoyed the game enough to replay the remastered version. I was favorably impressed with the tale of development conflict before release. That information had escaped my notice until now. For me, it was a nice value add for this video.
Thanks Mortim ! Hope you will review System Shock ! (currently playing the remastered version because I was a backer, we finally have access to the game) And hope you will at least try the old versions of System shock and System Shock 2 to compare, they're definitely among my favorite game so I can't wait to see you review them !
The shotgun and the bolt shooter makes you steamroll through the game. Loved use them with the shock + drone/bees skill to cheese everything. Quite enjoyed the remaster. Wished Infinite had continued the story or done more with the little sisters.
I’m so glad you finally got to experience this amazing story. This game came out a week before my 17th birthday (the age required in my state to buy M rated games) but I befriended the GameStop guy at the midnight release and he sold it to me. This went on to become a profound game in my life (as well as the two sequels). I even wrote a paper about Andrew Ryan and the dystopian Rapture in college. Would you kindly play Bioshock Infinite and give us your thoughts on its story as well 😉
I first came in contact with the BioShock franchise was with BioShock Infinite back in 2019. It was fun to play. More so because the first time I played the game was in 1999 Mode. And yes, the developers said that the game will not “feel like BioShock”. But I really enjoyed it more, compared to the lower difficulty settings. But after that, I played through every BioShock game. And got them all to 100%. It is interesting because I usually don't play FPS. Nonetheless, I had a lot of fun.
Now you got bioshock under ya belt I'm curious on your thoughts and opinions on Bioshock 2 and BioShock Infinite, opinions are definitely divided on who likes what, your opinion tho would mean a whole lot more because I love your approach and perspective on reviewing a game, take care till the next one, and thanks again for reviewing this, this game was hugely influential on me when it first came out, and 'That' song at the end of BioShock infinite during the credits is incredibly moving, always stirs my heart every time I hear it
One of my favorite games. The world design is incredible. One of the best games of its Era. If you haven't played it, I HIGHLY recommend it. Also I have a steam deck and it plays very well on it incase you wanted to try it on your deck
Hey there mortismal , love the the videos you post, it's badass as to how quickly you 100% these games and your indepth view on them... Been trying to start a channel of my own, could you give me a few tips, would be really helpful getting my Career going with regards to gaming...and again love the uploads, keep em coming 👍🤘
I would really like your input on the Steam Deck, given how you almost always bring that up in your videos it would be interesting to hear your experience as a player with the Steam Deck
I didn't know until a few weeks ago that Armin Shimerman (DS9's Quark himself, and a classy gentleman) voiced Andrew Ryan in Bioshock. And, as a side note, the voice of Atlas throughout most of the game sounds very, very authentically Irish - specifically, like a West Dublin accent, which perhaps Colin Farrell should sound like from the Castleknock/Blanchardstown area... Great game, but it was lightning in a bottle.
This is one of the few games that allow you to use some "ambient elemental interactions". The other games that comes to my mind that have that feature are Divinity original sin 1/2 and Dark messiah of might and magic and in some extend also the old system shock 2 and the other Arkane games like Prey and Dishonored. It's a shame that a lot of modern game doesn't have any kind of environment interactions. I din't play Bioshock 2, but i remember that Bioshock infinite was a bit disappointing.
I agree with a lot of this. Having just played Bioshock for the first time in 2024, I think all the praise about the atmosphere is well deserved. Rapture is still a great setting in 2024. I thought the story was good but not nearly as good as I was expecting it to be. Unless you're willing to experiment with all the tonics and weapons to keep things interesting, the combat gets repetitive quickly. Bioshock is pretty clunky to play compared to modern titles, but it's still worth checking out to experience Rapture. I had a much better time with Infinite because I liked the world more and it has many quality of life improvements over the first game.
Maybe the game would have had more impact on the player 16 years ago, although a bigger screen is not to be underestimated. I found especially the atmosphere very thrilling and was constantly feeling uneasy. The first times a big daddy charged at me I freaked out, panicked, and died... Nowadays some gameplay and combat designs have evolved, but I still think the whole package is worthwhile playing. And it not only has been a milestone in creativity 16 years ago, but is IMHO still above average compared to quite a few modern AAA titles.
When you do the hardest difficulty on Bioshock infinite make sure you stockpile a shit ton of ammo for the late mid game. I'm not joking you you can get soft locked and it will be a shitty time.
I think the combat is just a product of its time, it was awesome when it first came out. I replayed it a couple years ago and I can see how it is a bit dated now but I still enjoyed it. Also without knowing the impact of your choice to sacrifice or save the little sisters you really did feel the weight of choice, and I felt that weight a lot especially when I sacrificed every last one of them; When I replayed it as an adult and I saved them all it was a redemptive experience. It's certainly not pleasant to take their lives, and the morality of a promise of power without context was a big part of the choice.
I think the choice of saving or harvesting more so plays into the illusion of choice the player is given. From a gameplay standpoint yes it could’ve been better but from a narrative standpoint it kinda flips the idea of choice on it’s head
I can't believe Bioshock Remastered has new game plus, the original didn't have it? I think, pretty darn sure about it... Then they didn't add the same mode for Bioshock 2, it's freaking unbelievable. But that's where we're at.
Just my opionion/idea but I'd love it if you could add in a small section on how attainable/inconvenient getting the 100% achievements are for each review. I'm sure a lot of people who watch your videos are completionists (like me) and some games I'd like to know how much of a grind the 100% would be. Sometimes even 1 achievement can add hours and hours
I hope after this review the last one who hasn't played it is going to! Though I don't even know if there many people here who haven't played Bioshock yet xD
This is one of the titles I absolutely love and replay every couple of years. Fantastic story and still fun to play. The Big Daddy’s and Little Sisters are such wonderful creations. This is a must play for anyone who missed it.
Head's up: Bypassing the 2k launcher will become necessary when you get to Bioshock Infinite. It SEVERELY affects the performance of that game, even though it's quite an old game at this point.
I still haven't bought and played this game as I was a bit in doubt and other games keep popping up distracting me; but this review *might* have changed my mind about that when I see it discounted at the next Steam sales ;)
Yes, I suppose the combat is a bit repetitive but it was pretty good 16 years ago! A big part of this game is just the experience of being in Rapture with its Art Deco style, vintage music and claustrophobic atmosphere. Glad you enjoyed it overall. Now would you kindly review the rest of the series 😉
Its fine, an 8/10 game with an interesting setting, meh gameplay and good story. Bioshock 1: 8/10 Bioshock 2 7/10 Bioshock Infinite 8.5/10 Good games but MASSIVELY overrated.
Bioshock 1 and 2 are awesome. If anything, 2 is even slightly better, especially the DLC. I felt let down by Infinite, though. The gameplay was very pared down and all the effort seemed to be on graphics (which were awesome), Elizabeth (who was pretty cool) and story (which was, for me, kinda meh). It tried so hard to be deep and thoughtful and stuff, but for me it felt like Ken Levine's selfindulgence 😃. Wasn't very impressed.
When it first came out, before the reveals the internet would post, saving or killing the little sisters having al.ost no difference in the amount you get wasn't known, shown 16 years ago the choice felt more impact full. The animation for killing them was uncomfortable as well, for the time
Great review, as always, but you failed to address the no. 1 burning question that everyone watching this is asking: If I can only get this or Atomic Heart, which do you recommend?? 🤣
I hope you review BioShock 2. The combat in that game is WAY BETTER! It improves all the short-comings of BioShock 1's combat, except it's still a little bit floaty for my taste, but still pretty damn amazing overall.
Didn't play these games when they came out. The collection was on sale at the beginning of covid, so i have 0 nostalgia goggles thankfully. Love all 3 games for different reasons, 2 is my favorite for gameplay. 1 is my favorite for atmosphere/story. 3 i enjoy the story, just not as a bioshock game if that makes sense
Bioshock can be considered in the pantheon of the classics. The subegenre it belongs to is Immersive Sim, and although Bioshock is in the low spectrum (not enough player choice vs Deus Ex for example), it emphasizes the other elements which are emergent gameplay, visual worldbuilding and sense of player agency. Thus an Immersive Sim game. The artstyle is very evocative and its probably Bioshock's main strength (art-deco). Gameplay is decent/serviceable but not the best. The reveal at the end is awesome (for an FPS). Lastly, Bioshock ;along with many other Immersive Sim games (ex Prey, Deathloop); have the code 451 as the first door code, a reference to System Shock's first door code.
@@nifftbatuff676 Regardless where they are in the spectrum, the developers and the community considers them. Bioshock is even considered the spiritual successor to System shock by Levigne, Bioshock's key dev and dev who also worked in S.Shock. Hybrid (the industry term) didnt even exist back then & it is a recent term invention.
Telekinesis is the BEST, for some reason throwing a body at someone is a one hit kill 90% of the time, and if you get really good with that power you can yo-yo the body around without it ever touching the ground. I feel like such a Sith lord when I do that :P

Thank you, i hope you'll also have an amazing Day.
I loved this game when it came out. If you haven’t you should play dishonored
Would you kindly play Bioshock Infinite and give us your thoughts on its story as well 😉
Awesome review! 👌
amazing review. Bioshock is such a nostalgic title for me. I cannot wait for bioshock infinite review
great videos and opinions! just wish the videos were longer!!
I jus started a new playthrough a few hours ago. It’s still soooo good!
Nonetheless, I had a lot of fun.
thank you for sharing. would be nice to see reviews on dishonored, prey, and dealthloop
I've reviewed prey and deathloop, loved prey & enjoyed deathloop. Should get around too dishonored over the next few months.
Now you got bioshock under ya belt I'm curious on your thoughts and opinions on Bioshock 2 and BioShock Infinite, opinions are definitely divided on who likes what, your opinion tho would mean a whole lot more because I love your approach and perspective on reviewing a game, take care till the next one, and thanks again for reviewing this, this game was hugely influential on me when it first came out, and 'That' song at the end of BioShock infinite during the credits is incredibly moving, always stirs my heart every time I hear it
Another Great Classic. Thanks for the review, Mortym!
what a pleasant surprise!
One of my favorite games. The world design is incredible. One of the best games of its Era. If you haven't played it, I HIGHLY recommend it. Also I have a steam deck and it plays very well on it incase you wanted to try it on your deck
Love this game and its atmosphere. The gameplay feels old. But still fun. Love the sounds of this game.
I would really like your input on the Steam Deck, given how you almost always bring that up in your videos it would be interesting to hear your experience as a player with the Steam Deck
short version is I think it's great, plays most everything and I can use it when I don't feel like sitting in my office
Planning on checking these out eventually. Got all 3 games for free on Epic awhile ago. I just have to clear my massive backlog. lol
The combat is amzaing, had to say it
I agree with a lot of this.
Thanks for the review, I recently got the whole Bioshock collection for a few €. Now let's find time to actually play games.
I don't know why I watched this whole thing. I 100% this game forever ago. The internet has done weird things to me, but I like your videos
Gameplay is the most important for me, but there are a few games with mediocre gameplay that got me hooked. One of them is Bioshock.
Bioshock 2 was the first one I played and I still feel it's the superior game.
I beat this game with only the wrench once. It was surprisingly powerful.
Hi Mortym! Bioshock is one fav games of all time. Now, would you kindly review Bioshock 2 and Bioshock Infinite?
When you do the hardest difficulty on Bioshock infinite make sure you stockpile a shit ton of ammo for the late mid game. I'm not joking you you can get soft locked and it will be a shitty time.
Headshots galore for 1999 mode
Literally loading up bioshock right now because of this lol
Mortim how did you know I've been wanting to finally play this and needed a recent review?
Just my opionion/idea but I'd love it if you could add in a small section on how attainable/inconvenient getting the 100% achievements are for each review. I'm sure a lot of people who watch your videos are completionists (like me) and some games I'd like to know how much of a grind the 100% would be. Sometimes even 1 achievement can add hours and hours
Bro do u have a rest button? I open up TH-cam and bam another 100% vid
Your speed is insane
Legendary games, replaying it many times in my 30s, now in my late 40s no passion to play video games anymore, old age with change you for good
I still haven't bought and played this game as I was a bit in doubt and other games keep popping up distracting me; but this review *might* have changed my mind about that when I see it discounted at the next Steam sales ;)
Bioshock 1: 8/10
Bioshock 2 7/10
Bioshock Infinite 8.5/10
Good games but MASSIVELY overrated.
Hacking was improved, dual wielding made combat more smooth, rivet gun was fun AF. I love 2
When it first came out, before the reveals the internet would post, saving or killing the little sisters having al.ost no difference in the amount you get wasn't known, shown 16 years ago the choice felt more impact full. The animation for killing them was uncomfortable as well, for the time
Gosh, my autocorrect hates me
Great review, as always, but you failed to address the no. 1 burning question that everyone watching this is asking: If I can only get this or Atomic Heart, which do you recommend?? 🤣
Good show sir
