What I love about cetaceans so much is their skull anatomy. I highly recommend doing some research on skull bones of ceataceans and how much their nasal bones and premaxilla moved upwards. It's just so fascinating, they still possess the same bones we do, but they're just morphed in a different shape. Absolutely superb.

I have similar gripes too. It doesn't make any sense to me. How are these paleoartists so amazing at shading, coloring, anatomy, backgrounds... yet they have literally no creativity or vision when it comes to the actual animal's appearance? They just draw them like, so plain, it ends up looking weird and unnatural. Even the "plainest" looking animals that are alive today still have stunning and beautiful features. For example, look at a coyote's fur coat... from a distance, it just looks like a plain brown color, but when you look at it up close, their fur is white, black, brown, all sorts of shades. I don't know why they do it. Maybe they're just trying to make art for some boring, crappy middle school science book and wanting it to fit the narrative of what people think dinosaurs look like, or something. I don't know.

Quality as usual. I would still love to see an exploration of another marine mammal family, Desmostylia. Some of the more derived species were fully aquatic pelagic animals, and would have lived alongside cetaceans, who ultimately won the battle of survival. How they managed to survive in the open ocean without any of the conventional aquatic adaptations, such as a streamlined body shape with modified swimming limbs and tails, makes them extremely curious and interesting creatures.
They’re actually on the order level when it comes to diversity. They’re tethyerians, making their closest relatives today manatees and elephants. It would have had a hippo-like appearance but probably had the similar rough skin to elephants and manatees. They didn’t have a streamlined body shape at all, and bore huge flippers instead. Quite bizarre indeed. Although they lived alongside cetaceans, it’s likely that they went extinct from competition by sirenians, which fed in the same food sources as them. Sirenians evolved a much better body plan for life in the water, which is why they are still alive today and yet the Desmostylians all went extinct.

I always love the moments when two scientists discover the same thing roughly at the same time without intercommunication. It indicates that scientific, cultural and even religious ideas are tied to specific points of growth in understanding that may be indicative of evolutionary markers in civilization development. Of course we'd need to to look at the history of other nonhuman civilizations to be certain but it really puts into perspective how, despite our view of detachment from the physical world, even our deepest thoughts and emotions are tied to physical absolutes
The MRCAs of cats&dogs, cetaceans and artiodayctyls lived about the same time, approx 50 million years ago. The enormous differences in the rates of evolutionary changes amazes me. Cats & dogs are almost the same animal in comparison.

The transition to not laying eggs and taking an actively nurturing role was so revolutionary in lifes evolution. Even though it started on land it quickly invaded the sea and carved out its own niche in already established eco systems. The evolution of whales have always fancied me. I remember going to an expedition in Aberdeen as a kid and being big into dinosaurs ect from a young age it helped feed my intrest in evolution something that's still here to this day. Love the videos by the way please keep up the good work.

The thing is that I‘m not even native in English and I don’t even know how these classifications are in my native language.

What I love about cetaceans so much is their skull anatomy. I highly recommend doing some research on skull bones of ceataceans and how much their nasal bones and premaxilla moved upwards. It's just so fascinating, they still possess the same bones we do, but they're just morphed in a different shape. Absolutely superb.
Basilosaurus got it's name, because they were originally believed to be reptiles. Similar to mosasaurs.

Why do illustrators draw prehistorical animals without lips? I mean there's never any end to them. There are barely any animals today with permanently bared teeth, so why shouldn't a majority of the animals in prehistoric times have lips on most illustrations?
I have similar gripes too. It doesn't make any sense to me. How are these paleoartists so amazing at shading, coloring, anatomy, backgrounds... yet they have literally no creativity or vision when it comes to the actual animal's appearance? They just draw them like, so plain, it ends up looking weird and unnatural. Even the "plainest" looking animals that are alive today still have stunning and beautiful features. For example, look at a coyote's fur coat... from a distance, it just looks like a plain brown color, but when you look at it up close, their fur is white, black, brown, all sorts of shades. I don't know why they do it. Maybe they're just trying to make art for some boring, crappy middle school science book and wanting it to fit the narrative of what people think dinosaurs look like, or something. I don't know.

Random mutations having all the time, that's why they're called Random. It can be de novo (in the sperm or egg DNA, also called the germ-line) which then becomes hereditary. We also know that retroviruses can insert themselves into a cell's DNA. The vast majority of DNA mutations have more to do with 'switches' that decide when to turn on or off a certain development or function (ie, not making a crucial enzyme, or autoimmune diseases).
Even something as simple as blood types (ABO and RH Pos/Neg) are mutations. The vast majority of mutations are benign (not causing any benefit or problem). But I'm sure you know that a problem happens when an Rh Neg mother gives birth to an RH positive child?
So mutations are random, and can be either benign, beneficial, or detrimental. However, Natural Selection is NOT random. The environment, the habitat, the predator/prey dichotomy...all of these natural forces act upon the phenotype, the physical expression of the genotype. An individual that lives long enough to have offspring, who then may carry beneficial mutations, then live long enough to have offspring of their own. And so forth.
You mentioned Eagles soaring to catch prey, yet we know that birds are very different from each other in shape, abilities, predator/prey scenarios, breeding/birthing behaviors. All birds that we have today diverged from one common bird ancestor, who was a descendant of one type of dinosaur, and that all dinosaurs types evolved from one common reptile ancestor.
btw, DNA had not been discovered at the time Darwin was writing his books. But the field of genetics in every possible way has demonstrated the facts of Evolution by Natural Selection.
We don't believe in evolution because Darwin wrote about it. That would be an argument from Authority which is how conservatives think. We accept Evolution as the best model for the explanation of the diversity of life on earth because we have about 150 years of evidence from multiple fields of study (biology, genetics, geology, immunology, even cosmology). Darwin simply gets credit for being (mostly) right.
You have almost zero evidence that a God did it. Quality as usual. I would still love to see an exploration of another marine mammal family, Desmostylia. Some of the more derived species were fully aquatic pelagic animals, and would have lived alongside cetaceans, who ultimately won the battle of survival. How they managed to survive in the open ocean without any of the conventional aquatic adaptations, such as a streamlined body shape with modified swimming limbs and tails, makes them extremely curious and interesting creatures.

They’re actually on the order level when it comes to diversity. They’re tethyerians, making their closest relatives today manatees and elephants. It would have had a hippo-like appearance but probably had the similar rough skin to elephants and manatees. They didn’t have a streamlined body shape at all, and bore huge flippers instead. Quite bizarre indeed. Although they lived alongside cetaceans, it’s likely that they went extinct from competition by sirenians, which fed in the same food sources as them. Sirenians evolved a much better body plan for life in the water, which is why they are still alive today and yet the Desmostylians all went extinct.

I always love the moments when two scientists discover the same thing roughly at the same time without intercommunication. It indicates that scientific, cultural and even religious ideas are tied to specific points of growth in understanding that may be indicative of evolutionary markers in civilization development. Of course we'd need to to look at the history of other nonhuman civilizations to be certain but it really puts into perspective how, despite our view of detachment from the physical world, even our deepest thoughts and emotions are tied to physical absolutes
The MRCAs of cats&dogs, cetaceans and artiodayctyls lived about the same time, approx 50 million years ago. The enormous differences in the rates of evolutionary changes amazes me. Cats & dogs are almost the same animal in comparison.

The transition to not laying eggs and taking an actively nurturing role was so revolutionary in lifes evolution. Even though it started on land it quickly invaded the sea and carved out its own niche in already established eco systems.
