    Lana Lang from SMALLVILLE. Lana’s “right” to know everything about Clark took self-righteousness and entitlement to new levels .

      Yep. That relationship was doomed from the start. Lana's trust issues were incompatible with Clark's need for secrecy. So when they introduced Lois in season 4, I was all ready for Clark to move on. But he didn't. They ended up making her irradiated with Kryptonite in season 8 after bringing her back to complicate things with Lois.

    Amy Pond had her flaws, but during her run on the show she underwent character development and improved dramatically. Most of the sins you sited were during her first year on the show. By her second season there was no doubt that Rory was the love of her life ("Rory is the most beautiful man I've ever met." - The Girl Who Waited) to the point where she voluntarily shared his exile in the past at the end of their run. Yeah, I have issues with how they wrote them off, but in the end Amy chose Rory over all other considerations. Rory may have deserved better, but in the end Amy sought to be better.

      I don't know if they intended, it but I read a twinge of 'Civil Rights' Parable watching reruns in College (FWIW) in that She was 'Passing' and if she Publicly displayed too much of her heritage they could be outed as an 'Interracial' couple... so it was less "Don't be who you are." as much as don't get caught or we're both in trouble...
      Then of course there is the insults and personal attacks that he suffered from his Mother in Law solely because Samantha married a Mortal (again some racial allegory?) to say nothing of the physical abuse he suffered whenever another of her relatives showed up... is it any wonder he doesn't want her to turn out/ act like them..
      all of that aside if you look at the era; how much of it was a sanitized/G-rated version of what we saw unfiltered in Mad Men... Darrin worked in Advertising (heck I think Mad Men might have even name checked the Agency he Worked for as an Easter Egg) he might have fancied himself a Draper-type... and had he married a lesser woman, could have easily turned her into 'Betty 2.0'

    While I disagree with the judgment that Jack Shephard is a terrible person, I can see why his obsessive nature - an obsession with doing the right thing, as he perceives it, and saving others - would make him unlikable to many, though unlikable and terrible are not the same thing. But I find this criticism - "Judging his dad for drinking on the job" - to be bizarre. His dad's job was head of surgery at a large hospital. Christian Shephard was performing surgery while drunk. Jack struggles with the decision, but ultimately does the right thing and turns his father in. This is evidence of his being a good person. Betraying his father may make him unlikable, but doesn't make him a bad person. Loyalty is not always a good thing.
    I've never seen an episode of How I Met Your Mother. The premise doesn't appeal to me. So I can't comment on Ted Mosby. The rest, however are examples of people being unlikable, often making bad decisions, not being terrible.
    Having revisited Friends when it came to Netflix, I found my 20 years later perspective changed how I saw things drastically. Phoebe is the only one of the Friends that I find remotely likable. But again, likability and being a good person are separate things. Darth Vader is cool and badass and pure evil (I've never accepted that he deserves redemption at the end - his one "good" act is not killing his own son).
    Elphaba in Wicked is hard to like, but she's also the only genuinely good person in the musical. And in the original Wizard of Oz, the Wicked Witch of the West is also easy to hate . . . but she was also mostly in the right. She wants her sister's shoes back. That's it, she wants the property that rightly belongs to her to be returned. When the quartet shows up to break into her house and kill her, she defends herself. I can't watch the Wizard of Oz without thinking that the Witch is as much of a victim as Dorothy and the trio, and the true villains are the Wizard and Glinda.
    My favorite is Jack and the Beanstalk - Jack is a charming trickster who repeatedly breaks into a man's house to steal his things, then murders the homeowner for trying to stop him, and the giant is basically chillin' out when Jack repeatedly steals his most valuable property over and over and is killed while trying to catch the burgler. Likable Jack is a terrible person, and the monstrous Giant is at worst an innocent victim.

      I know! I loved Gilmore Girls for the most part, mostly for the side characters. By the end, both Lorelei and Rory were so self centered. It's like Lorelei was permanently stuck at the age of 16 as far as relationships go. I’d add Leslie Knope from Parks & Rec, but it really isn’t subtle and her railroading behavior is addressed a number of times. Everyone on the cast is terrible for mistreating Jerry/Garry, but that’s all part of a classic comedy bit - the unfairly mistreated guy has a secret awesome home life and is generally happy despite the disrespect of his coworkers. They’re bad for doing it, but it’s framed as being like a cosmic thing, as if the universe has given Gergich a magical blessing and curse - at home, he is blessed beyond all rational expectation, while at work, his coworkers abuse him to an irrational extent, with even the most empathetic characters wholly unable to recognize it and even are drawn to participate. I mean, really, it’s just a comedy bit, and the laws of reason are suspended for the sake of the gag, with the corresponding “beautiful attentive wife, beautiful loving children, etc” allowing the audience to continue to enjoy the joke because they know Gergich will be fine at the end of the day.

    I disagree a whole bunch with this list. Jim is definitely mean to Dwight and bullies him, but Jim for the most part does it in a light hearted manner which is through pranks. But the thing is Dwight is basically/sort of a horrible person to everyone which includes Jim. So in fact it’s two people being distasteful to one another. And could you really blame Jim, imagine having Dwight as a coworker and a new guy comes in and meets Dwight, who is immediately hostile and rude, so the new guy plays pranks on him, which probably goes to far and becomes non-stop. Also, I still do not condone Jim’s actions regarding Pam, but it is without a doubt Pam’s fault a whole lot more than Jim. Her actions are far worse. In a relationship with someone, you must expect your SO to be hit on but for your SO to shut down others, and especially not for your SO to flirt with them. Jim himself could have stepped back from Pam, but when he’s head over heels for her and she still flirts with him, that’s a pretty hard ask. But in the end he still moves branches to get away from her. With Karen, that’s not great. The relationship was born out of the fact that Jim could never get Pam, but Jim isn’t as flirty with Pam when with Karen, but Pam is very much flirty with Jim, understandably as she broke it of with Roy because of Jim.
    I haven’t watched The Office in a while so some details could be wrong but overall this video was lacking and I would write so much more but would write a dissertation then.

    • @mshilah
      @mshilah 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      So it's OK for Jim to be flirty with Pam when Pam is in a relationship, but not for Pam to be flirty with Jim when he is in a relationship? That's a double standard.

    • @jimmyneutron4158
      @jimmyneutron4158 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@mshilah I never said that either of their of their flirting was ok, both of their flirting is bad. But I did give connotation/context to their flirting. And both their flirting happened in different circumstances;
      Jim flirted with Pam and she flirted back with Jim, this is when Pam was in a relationship. Both shouldn’t of flirted and it was bad on both of them. Fair to Jim though as he was head over hills for this girl and this girl is flirting with him, hard to expect anyone to have that self control not to flirt. Both definitely should not have flirted though but especially Pam as she was in a relationship. Arguably you could even argue it was just playful office banter, and there was nothing wrong with it. Anyways Jim moved to another branch because of it, so he does end up sort of calling off his flirting.
      Then Jim was with Karen. Jim most definitely flirted less and less intensely with Pam as both had done before. But their was still some flirting and most of it was from Pam. To be fair to Pam though, she’d broken off her engagement to Roy, which was the right thing to do; I doubt any sane person could break off an engagement due to having feelings for someone else and then just not pursue that person. Correct me if am wrong but she also didn’t break off her engagement and for her to go ‘I am going to break Jim and Karen up’, she didn’t even know Jim was in a relationship.
      Being the moral police, Jim and Pam should never have flirted and interacted the way they did. But from a realistic stand point - they were in such a hard position, that they handled very well, and I find it hard pressed that many people would do the same, nor should they be judged as bad people for it when they ended up being the best people for one another in the end.
      No double standard.

    • @Reggie2000
      @Reggie2000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Pam was engaged. Jim was just dating.
      Karen didn't have to move. She wanted too, and with her job gone, she also moved for work reasons. She had a client base at stake.
      Jim had the best of intentions with Karen. Pam hated being with Roy and should have ended that years ago.
      Ultimately though both are flawed heroes.

      Agreed. Plus, the video made it seem like Jim didn't support Pam in her career endeavors. He never got in the way and supported her each time she changed her mind. However, when he wanted to pursue the whole sports rep thing, she really didn't want to leave Scranton and held him back. She is flawed but they all are - makes for a great show.

      What I think is blamed on certain viewers is that they paint Skylar in a much worse colour than she truly is all while putting Walt on this weird pedestal. It's the dichotomy that's pointed out as misogyny.
      And to be fair, it wasn't "just" a dislike. There were active hate campaigns against Skylar. There are still people who, to this day, will argue that she was the worst of the lot, that she was somehow more manipulative than Walt, and that she was his true accomplice and as in on the meth business as he was. Some will even go as far as to say that she's the reason Walt had no other choice than to do what he did. It's all ridiculous, and it all stems from deeply rooted misogyny.

    Perhaps not that secret, but I'd say Jack Bauer from 24 is a pretty terrible person--although someone who pretty much has to be terrible to save the day. He was a very flawed character from the first episode when it was clear he had cheated on Terri. And every season, Jack simply acts without thinking or taking opinions of others into account. While he turns out to be right more often than not, it keeps him from connecting to others, or even from accomplishing his goals at times.
    Another one that may not be so secret, but Jock Ewing of Dallas is a pretty terrible person. While he loves his family, he drove one son out of the state (Gary), kept another secret for years (Ray), and pitted the other two against each other, even after his death (Bobby and JR). He also kept the ongoing feud against the Barnes family, particularly Digger, which drove Digger to his death.

Anyhow, regarding 'The Office', Jim is by no stretch of the imagination a bad guy! He's a decent man who pulls hilarious pranks. And if you watch the show closely, Dwight does terrible things to Jim throughout - not just pranks, but actions that could seriously hurt Jim financially and/or ruin his career. Sure, Jim's a slacker at first, but his character grows and matures throughout the show. He makes some mistakes, but when he realizes what he's done, he makes up for them. He didn't kiss Pam 'repeatedly' - who wrote that? He decided to express his feelings to her and kissed her once. When she said 'no', he backed-off. If you're going to choose a 'terrible person' from the office, it would 100% be Michael. One of the most infuriating, needy, selfish, embarrassing, childish characters ever written!

    Considering how badly Roy actually treated Pam and we are shown that continuously throughout the show, Jim is basically the guy that says "you deserve better" and then gives it to her.
    So trying to place him as "the bad guy" makes you look like a fool lol you mean pam, who was engaged for years and basically forced to wait to get married, to a guy who didn't want to marry her lol considered her options and found someone who actually wanted her? XD *facepalm*
    Pams dream actually did not die and she went on to paint murals and handle other large projects, that not only encouraged but sustained her desire to be an artist.
    Being a mom had nothing to do with that and she was never a stay at home mom else she would not work at the office lol
    The whole irony of Jim starting his own Company was due to Jim and Pam having a discussion in an earlier episode where Pam clearly says "if you start your own company you'd tell me right?", thus the segway from that lead into Jim starting Athleat, which was a joke / gag due to the previous statement from Pam.
    Jim actually purchased the house on his own, to give to Pam as a place to express her art and grow as an artist, as well as a place for them to start a family lol if all you see is selfishness, then you sir have some pretty deluded thoughts about what a relationship / family is all about XD
