Just lie on your CV and say you passed it anyway, simples. If it’s good enough for the chancellor of the exchequer it’s good enough for our young lads and lasses.

When I was an apprentice I found maths very difficult. I was earning money and spent that money on paying for extra tuition which paid off and I passed easily in the end. This is not helpful to anyone. I suspect it’s to help a certain demographic that are too lazy to study.

Is it worth going to school at all now, this is moronic. What apprenticeship can you do without maths and English.
Jacky Spliff will sort it out for us, perhaps we need more rubber boats, they can’t read or count either.

I don't think school is great anymore. My daughter didn't get help with her dyslexia and it caused her to get quite down at school and perform poorly.
Now she works up at a stable, with no qualifications and she's smashing her brittish horse exams because she's enjoying what she's doing. She works harder than most adults which cannot be taught at school.

When I was a child I had a tutor who used to work with dyslexic children, she showed me work books to train dyslexic kids.
My own mother supplemented my education from the earliest age, parents have to take up the challenge of educating our kids independently of schools for better outcomes, and to address our kids needs.

As much as I and some people are not the biggest fans of maths you can’t argue it’s useful one of my maths teachers in year 5 back when I lived on Portugal said maths is and will always be present in our lives whether you need to measure your fabrics which you (I) love, weight your flour, measure your floors, use it to manage your personal finances, maths is always gonna be around.
Not everyone needs advanced maths for engineering but if we use it for what we need it can actually be enjoyable.

I left school with no qualifications in English or Mathematics. I still had to pass an employers English and Mathematics test before I was taken on as an apprentice. You don’t need to understand what a Past Participle is or what nonlinear equations are to do an apprenticeship.

Why on earth would you need English or maths to be an apprentice? It's not like the ability to count and communicate is anything valued by this government. Would this be encouraging firms to hire foreign apprentices with no impediment or standards? Please tell me this is the bit where Ewan Blair gets his snout in the trough with his training company to 'manage' whatever lunatic training policy the government comes up with.

Not everyone is academic, kids who get passes in Maths and English will likely go on to university. Nurse apprenticeships don't need Maths and English GCSE's just functional skills but a tradesman does, let kids learn on the job so they dont fall into a NEET trap they can't get out of

I think you are oblivious to how low the standards of literacy and numeracy are in poor communities across the nation. In East London Westfield Stratford had to send the young people working in their retail stores on courses because there literacy and numeracy were so poor that they couldn't meet the basic requirements for a shop floor retail job including cashing up.
Nursing is normally a 2 year course and requires a variety of skills, but you think numeracy & literacy aren't required?

Erm Nurses NEED to know how to convert micrograms, milligrams millilitres, etc. A few years ago a locum doctor flew in from Germany for a shift in a hospital. He gave a patient 5 times the dose of morphine she needed as he didn't understand the difference between micrograms and milligrams. English wasn't his first language.

They just want an economy of cheap labor.
Minimum wage is £6.40 for an apprentice so if you work full-time, 35 hours a week. You will be paid £224 a week. Then times by 52. Gives you £11, 648.
Important to note, the vast majority of apprenticeships are part-time, averaging 16 hours to 28. So you would earn less.
How on Earth is anyone going to live on that sort of salary. It's ridiculous. If you're a 16-year-old that still lives with your parents. Then this is affordable. But if you're an adult that lives alone, it's not even viable you could make more money working part-time in a different job. Ridiculous policy. This government has embraced the broken political system of feudalism. At the expense of the poorest and most vulnerable in our society, this government should be ashamed.
We need a £15 minimum wage, some unskilled state employees £12. 50 for fiscal responsibility purposes.
Apprenticeship pay should be 75% of whatever the minimum wage is for your age bracket.
And to help business is incorporations afford it. Corporation tax should be lowered to 5%.
And to help the government with a couple of loss of finances increase vat from 20% to 21%.
And the threshold for employee sponsored national insurance should be reversed and potentially even increased.
This will cause an explosion in service jobs. And small business. Not exploit people and use them as cheap labor to line the pockets of corporations.
The people that get exploited by this the most are foreign Nationals with no skills. Or disabled people with no alternative option.
We need policies that actually help the working class not exploit them.

So, we are going to have a job vacancy filled by an apprentice which is cheap labour. Or, a normal worker thats going to cost a company, but, maybe it is a migrant person. or a disabled person whos going to cost a lot.
So, are we getting back to work?. As there isnt enough jobs for everyone.
Shock, horror. Labour havent thought this through.

The master ,s plan is coming together, without a Maths and English qualification , you now only need one Migrant to be qualified in whatever trade, who can act as a foreman , & translator , overseeing a workforce of 20 foreign migrants to start their own agency workforces , fully financially backed by the unions and government . with none of the work force earning enough to contribute back into the system.

  • @jabbadabbajew6035

There are 3 reasons for doing this.
    1. The Apprenticeship Levy is running out. This is because the Government takes a £800 million top slice each year.
    2. It will allow immigrants to work in priority sectors, such as health and social care.
    3. They can’t employ enough teachers. The job losses this causes will push English and Maths Teachers back into the school system.
Imagine asking someone if they want to take an exam. Let’s all think hard to guess their answer? 🙄
    3.

@frankcousins7655 don’t rule it out or give them anymore silly ideas than they can already come up with.
My son is doing an apprenticeship thanks to passing his maths, chemistry and physics A levels but had no interest in going to uni.
At the interview they asked him a large variety of questions to test his knowledge plus understanding of what he had been taught and he was offered a job the next day.
All I can see this new policy doing is filling companies with duds that are neither use nor ornaments and those like my son who have gone on to be valuable employees will lose out big time.
