- A lecture about the lost world mountains (tepuis or tepuyes) of Venezuela, Brazil and Guyana by Stewart McPherson.
During this lecture, Stew accounts the story of discovery and exploration of the tepuis, and provides an overview of the biogeography, animals, plants and landscapes of these remarkable "lost world" mountains.
Subjects covered include the explorers Walter Raleigh, Robert Schomburgk, Richard Schomburgk, Everard Im Thurn, Mount Roraima, Jimmy Angel, Angel Falls, Heliamphora (pitcher plants), Drosera (sundews), iridescent-leaved plants, Stegolepis and more.

This was one of the coolest nature documentaries In a way there was so much fantastic content I could just watch it again its so unbelievable what’s hiding on the top it’s like mars, thank you so much for travelling to these places and showing things that the internet and tv will never do justice, you absolutely hit the nail right on the head with this one like you do every time, had to share the wonder with others, this was awe inspiring such an unbelievable world we live in just the layers in the ecosystems its unprecedented and then you add cave systems and it just all adds up to some Thing from your wildest fantasies something you read in a book from an old library. Again one of the best nature docs ive ever seen
I have read so much on these tepuis and bought your book a few years ago, but never tire of seeing and learning more and more about them. I practically "collect" tepuy expedition videos and thank you for this idea to brighten us up in the lockdown. It is very much appreciated!

Fascinaring lecture of one of the most interesting places in the world. The most amazing thing is that there is still so much to discover in this very ancient part of the world. Hoping that the situation in Venezuela improves to the point of allowing further investigation and discovery.
On another note, it is Interesting how the Schomburgk expedition had such an effect beyond its original scope and still till today afects the delimitation of the area.
Thanks for producing this fascinating video for all to access this wonderful information of my beloved country.

The best video I have seen about the tepuis. A very complete explanation of physical geography. What I think of all the good things that detracts from your work, is the explanation you make of the economy of Venezuela. Although our contemporary civilization is just an instant in eternity, it would be good to expand more on the subject or leave it out. Venezuela, like many nations of the continent and of the world, suffers the oppression of colonial domination. Venezuela's economic crisis is some way a product of the voracity of the British crown. At present its aggression is more clearly exposed and we can have little confidence in it or its subjects. Venezuelan gold remains in the Bank of London in a clear act of modern pirating. And I know that not everyone there agrees with that. I tell you this with the confidence of knowing that colonial societies are not totally homogeneous either, and in them there are people with broader horizons and they are not so heartless before the rest of humanity.

bit late to this, but thanks for putting up such an fascinating video! Somehow watching lots of videos about cave diving bought me to your video! What a place, cant imagine how amazing it must be to stand up on one of these Tepuis!
Thank you for this amazing trove of educational and entertaining information that details the actual subject. So many TH-cam videos about this place are merely narcissistic tourists interested only in documenting personal accomplishments, replete with 360 degree, panoramic selfie shots of the view from the summits ("notice me world, look, in my hand is the famous rare frog..."). They rarely offer any detail of the ramp, the climb, interesting geographic features, etc, etc. They seem to be oblivious as to just how awesome this place truely is.
Soory about that rant, but I think you'll understand what I'm saying, and again thank you.

Had a paperback copy of I M Thurn’s “ Among the Indians of British Guiana” in the 1970,s and was able to see a film of some Brits - poetry spouting nutters! - who climbed ‘The Prow’ of Roraima. A Pittsburg, USA based team climbed the Angel Falls face and others have been up Balls Pyramid in the Pacific. People do these things.
You cover so much so very well. Geo history, botany, zoology,…; the smaller aspects count greatly given time.
As a poor student on my own I only got to an ‘ox bow’ of the Mighty Essequibo with some old school macro photo gear for some weeks. Were I young and a lottery winner, I’d tag along to these worlds and s e Asian limestone. Well done.

Nice Video and pictures. Venezuela was a country since the Independence 1811. Jimmy Angles plane was recovered in 1970, it was restored and is display in front of Ciudad Bolivar airport

I'm a bit late, but I just realized the movie Up is located in the tepuis. The labyrinths and falls gave me deja vu of that movie and sure enough when I looked it up its true!

Thanks Stewart, for your work on Mount Roraima. For the record, Venezuela did already exist in the XIX Century. Sadly, the political circumstances at the time- recently regained Independence from Spain and then the internal Civil War that followed- gave space to adventurers and "scientists" like Schongberk to "re-write" the limits of my country. Those limits were already agreed and respected. The Esequibo River on the East was set as its righteous border. Up to date, this is still a contentious territorial claim we are still fighting to win.

Hi Stewart, you mentioned you had spent some time in south east asia. Have you been to the similar structures in borneo island (Indonesian, Kalimantan)? near to Samarinda? I flew over once and was amazed to see Cliffs rising from the jungle that went on for miles and miles. on the inside of the cliffs were limestone pinnacles, I am sure very difficult to penetrate this area. And very little info of anybody travelling there. Would love to hear your thoughts on that

Marvelous narration I have enjoyed it so much. However there is something to correct. By the time Schomburgk reaches the foothills of Roraima (1835), Venezuela was already an independient country. Much more it was when Im Thurn achieved to climb the ledge...
