@@delmofritz3964 Thank you. I appreciate that. That said, I mean, there's a good 100 songs or so that are approximately just as good as one another. Clearly, any list of their songs is subjective.. But some of his choices are kind of jack-ass choices. I've read that the real value in his list can be found in his writings for each song. Some day, I might read the article to figure out what his reasoning is.
I personally don't understand Beatles fans not liking certain of their songs. I like them all. I'm not saying they're all masterpieces and they certainly aren't all great but none of their songs is really bad. That's what I like about The Beatles. As far as quality and quantity is concerned, they're amazing. Which other band or artist has more than 200 songs without one stinker? It would be impossible for me to rank their songs.
Joe has indicated that he likes that song, and I do too. It's fun in a surreal, gallows-humor kind of way, distinctive and actually, in its wry whimsy, classically Beatles.
Someone in the comments was saying something like, “It’s not that he puts ‘Good Day Sunshine’ at the bottom; you have to read his commentary as to why.” Nah, what he wrote is drivel too, and does less than nothing to justify putting it at the bottom. His ranking is pure plague-ridden garbage.
“A Day in the Life” brilliant but for Me the most impactful songs were Eleanor Rigby, Fool on the Hill, Strawberry Fields, Tax Man, “Every Man/Woman songs” relatable, universal messaging
Obviously the writer(s) were doing shots with Jann Wenner ( 😉 or maybe Kramzer.. 😂 ) to put so many Macca songs on the bottom end I'd put 'You Know My Name in my Top Ten...true story
It is so overtly bad one has to wonder why and suspect a trick to provoke listeners reactions. And it succeeds. One major flaw is the need to base aesthetic judgement on biography or shitty notions on what should be Lennon's or McCartney's personnality. Worst is the overestimating of lyrics, especially when the journalist doesn't get the specific use of words in songs. It's like he expects everytime some piece of bad literature : literal meaning, true to the composer's biography. It's a poor misconception of songwriting, and art in general. Welcome to the world depicted in "Tar".

This list is terrible. I’m thinking “Bill Wyman” is a robot, because that’s the only reason why anyone would have these songs in this order. Maybe Bill Wyman and Kramzer are the same person. Just a theory.
I love you guys, bit you stepped right into it. They wanted your attention, they got it. Also, if you don‘t like Good Day Sunshine, you probably don‘t like the Beatles too much since it sounds extremely beatlesque.
This was a Black Mirror-like episode where TLM became their audience and channeled how a viewer watches a TLM ranking! And Rain ahead of Hey Jude every time.
@@scottanthonyweidner8692 Hey Jude is pretty overplayed by me, so my issue rather than the songs. And Rain is from my favorite Beatles period. Great songs and a great sound.
"Rain" had the potential to be one of the coolest recordings ever, if the lads had nailed that Indian harmony part in the chorus, but they didn't quite get it, John doesn't get the intonation right on one note, which imo needed that Indian quarter tone thing, the whole track would have been beyond epic, if he got that right, even Joe would have loved it, perhaps even Kramzer ;-)
I was expecting much worse, especially when I saw "Good Day Sunshine" at 214. But it's a pretty standard top ten. Not mine, of course, but nothing too egregious.
I was 12 year’s old when the Beatles broke up big fan then and now. If you were following them post-Beatles, the vitriol Lennon and Paul had was so painful to watch considering how much of their music was about love. I rank Now and Then much higher as a result feel it’s John coming to terms with his anger and feelings. Without that experience or context can see people liking it less.
About Roll Over Beethoven at #187: "A creditable early lead vocal on the Chuck Berry classic by George Harrison, who loved the song. It was a stage favorite that is a little tepid on record." I'm not complaining about the ranking so much because it is a cover but "tepid"? Screw that guy. This is a great version, much more energetic than Stones' covers of Chuck Berry; the Rolling Stones were more into the groove.
I'm not sure if any of the 1995 songs and "Now and Then" should even be on a list like this. Are they Canon? I do like "Now and Then" better after listening to it a few times, but is it isn't really a Beatles song.
Clearly, they're not a Lennon fan if Happiness is a warn gun is out of the top 100! Also, 'because' below Multiple mccartney tunes including why dont we do it in the road😂 Doesnt seem like a fan of Harrison either.... maybe just not a beatles fan😂
Don't know why they bothered with it really, just to put Now and Then down at 211. It should be pretty low but not that bad. Maybe 150-175. I agree with Joe. Good Day Sunshine at 214? Did Mr Wyman actually listen to it?
Those geniuses put "Her Majesty" ahead of "No Reply," "Oh Darling," and "Ballad of John and Yoko." I'm guessing they forgot to listen to the songs before they ranked them...
The Vulture list is terrible. Even so, I do like "Now and Then". I prefer it to the two Jeff Lynne produced songs. It can't compete with actual 1960's Beatles songs but is much better than I expected it to be. We all have different tastes in Beatles songs and all choices are valid. Cheers.
Just to reiterate to everyone here who has got all hung up on the rankings, the point of and value in this article is the quality of the writing on each song, not the actual rankings. If you think is clickbait you clearly havent read it.
I originally gave up reading this list around the #200 mark because I could tell it was just going to annoy and frustrate me and I had already recently seen their foolish Stones list so I expected a similar type of thing. Glancing through it as you were scrolling I saw they had some songs I really love just way too low like The Fool on the Hill, I've Just Seen a Face and Happiness is a Warm Gun. I am glad that Revolution #9 wasn't #1 though, that would have been a real 👨🎨 move. The top didn't end up being quite a crazy as I initially expected at least. I agree there should be a balance of classic picks with a few surprises - although it's best if those surprises make you go "hmm yeah that is a good pick" and not "wtf are you thinking". I'd have Now and Then pretty darn close to the bottom, I wouldn't feel good about having it even outside the bottom 3-5 probably.
OK. I'm disappointed you guys didn't engage with this a bit more. Bill Wyman is to my mind a fine music critic but an even better writer....but he's also a bit of a provocateur (you need to listen to him explaining why he thinks Good Day Sunshine is the worst Beatles song, you don't have to agree but he makes a good case). You're missing the point by simply agreeing or disagreeing with his placings. Enjoy the writing and do your own rankings (oh wait a sec, you do do that! 😂) In all seriousness, I've heard Bill on podcasts and he's good value, you should get him on to discuss his list.
I generally eschew ranking anyway, as apart from maybe one or two supreme examples of a certain category that do deserve top rank, I think such exercises become arbitrary to the point of illogic. For example, what sense does it make to state that Paul Klee, say, was the sixteenth greatest artist of the twentieth century? I do think relative ranking is more defensible, so that Amedeo Modigliani (to again grapple with the pantheon of twentieth-century artists) could be said to rank below Piet Mondrian in importance, who in turn could plausibly be argued to rank below Henri Matisse, and one could assign numbers to those ranks just for the sake of convenience, but otherwise such numerical rankings strike me as silly. As I've posted before, I think calling "Now and Then" a Beatles song is dubious for a variety of reasons, so its inclusion in the new list further complicates the list for me. I will say that "Penny Lane" and "Strawberry Fields Forever" deserve a high ranking in assessing the Beatles' legacy, and "A Day in the Life" is a defensible top pick, so the Vulture list seems pretty secure in those top three rankings.
I have an anti- McCartney bias but I wouldn't put "Good Day" there, it would be in my Top 50 at least. That's an insane placing . Then again I would probably put "When I'm 64" last, having hated it ever since I was forced to sing it at school aged 7 in 1970.
Here was my bottom 20 - which did NOT include any of the 90's songs or Now And Then: 210) Revolution 9 209) Devil In Her Heart 208) Matchbox 207) Maxwell's Silver Hammer 206) Good Night 205) Maggie Mae 204) Dig It 203) I'm Happy Just To Dance With You 202) Mr. Moonlight 201) A Taste of Honey 200) You Like Me Too Much 199) Honey Pie 198) Wild Honey Pie 197) I Wanna Be Your Man 196) Honey Don't 195) Hold Me Tight 194) Little Child 193) Dizzy Miss Lizzie 192) Ob-la-di Ob-la-da 191) The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill I'd probably put "Free As A Bird," "Real Love," and "Now And Then" somewhere in the 140's thru the 170's.
@@dj71162 That was the other one I was tempted to call him on, but that’s more attributable to not liking the ragtime throwback that Paul was doing there, so I found it many times more excusable.
As I consider the Beatle catalog for the sake of my own list, it strikes me - and awes me - that, contrary to the opinions of the vast majority of fans, that 1) not one song they released *before* Rubber Soul should be below 200, and 2) at least 85% of their songs are at least 4.5 stars on a 5 star scale.
There would be no such thing as an uncontroversial ranking of Beatles songs, albums, eras, hair styles, band members, moustaches, etc and etc. Such a thing is simply not possible because Beatles fans these days appear to be pretty pedantic about their Fave Four.
The anti McCartney bias still makes me laugh.. I love all the 3 main songwriters in the band , but I always suspected that McCartney passing away will turn many of these lists upside down… sadly
Sites like Vulture live up to their name - they know their lists are GARBAGE and that Beatles fans know it too and will click on them because it creates a response. They win because they get a reaction, whether it’s positive or negative.
Well I opened the list and the first thing it said was that Good Day Sunshine was the worst Beatles song. Already I'm pissed off, and I've been reading this list for two seconds. Now and Then isn't a masterpiece, but it's a really pretty ballad. It doesn't deserve this treatment. She's Leaving Home at 204? You're telling me that Wild Honey Pie deserves to be 25 songs higher than She's Leaving Home? Oh Darling at 178, Mother Nature's Son at 169... I'm noticing a trend here. I think this quote says it all: "it’s disconcerting to think that McCartney was spending so much time on fluff when he could have been looking for mature follow-ups to Penny Lane or Lovely Rita." Listen, I used to feel the exact same way. I used to think that McCartney's light and goofy songs were annoying. I also used to be a cynical jerkpants. McCartney is delightful, his fun and breezy music is among his most vital, and whoever wrote this doesn't deserve it.
It's a difficult job to rank them, but this is a terrible job. Good day sunshine might be my least favorite on my #1 favorite album ever, but it's still in my top 50. Strawberry fields forever would take my top spot
Well what do you expect from a Vulture. He certainly likes to gorge on his hate of McCartney. Alternately praising and bashing him. I agree with you guys. Definitely have Now and Then near the bottom.
Yeah this bad list is an odd one. 'Mr. Moonlight' at 153?! 'Matchbox' ahead of 'Fixing a Hole'!? As for 'Now and Then' it's okay, but belongs in the bottom 10 with the rest of the covers. Don't know if you guys commented on the video but it somehow makes the whole thing worse.
Jason put it exactly right - a good list blends some cultural consensus with some deep knowledge and personal preference and balances them together. This hamfisted mess of a list serves precisely no one
Some of the early songs are too low. Songs like Not a second time at 205 or Every little thing at 198 is probably proof that the reviewer is a casual who who just writes off the early stuff cause it’s less cool, without really knowing those songs too well
She's leaving home is not anyone's favorite but the lyrics are relatable as gritty Social Realism rather like Eleanor Rigby and Paperback Writer. It says things about everyday lives touching on issues such as parent-children relationships, dysfunctional maybe, the generation gap, maybe an unwanted pregnancy. I love the psychadelia elsewhere but I also love the 60s kitchen sink realism in this one.
Harry Nillson's cover of She's Leaving Home is pretty good. Also Aretha Franklin's cover of The Long and Ridding Road is great as well. My least favorite is Oba di Oba Di how is this song on the blue album best of is beyond me.
Im happy Rain is in the top 10 but Im super confused by Please Please Me at number 5. Its a great song and its one of my favorites but I think This Boy is WAY BETTER and they put that song so low.
Ranking all the songs is a silly idea imo. Maybe a top 50 for people unfamiliar with all their best songs. Have to agree with Mr Wyman in respect of Maxwell's silver hammer tho, awful song imo. The only reason some like it is because it's by The Beatles. Stuart
@@TastesLikeMusic Maxwell gets hate because John and George disliked it so fans in most cases hate it because their heroes didn't like it. It's a very clever song. It's not a big favourite but I would take it over Bungalow Bill which should get more hate. :) Also where it's sequenced on Abbey Road makes it a little jarring sandwiched between two masterpieces so it sticks out like a sore thumb in it's quirkiness.

They need to have you working for vulture instead of this guy.
In My Life is way too low & Run For Your Life is way too high.
Revolution #9. I'll say no more.
Being for the benefit of mr kite is in my top 20
I'm in Liverpool now and did a Beatles-themed tour today. I like commenting on how bad Maxwell's Silver Hammer is.
Joe has indicated that he likes that song, and I do too. It's fun in a surreal, gallows-humor kind of way, distinctive and actually, in its wry whimsy, classically Beatles.
One of their best songs. Sorry. - Joe
That Money placement, eesh.
If I were to rank all the Beatles original compositions worse than Now and Then:
1. Revolution #9
2. Wild Honey Pie
3. Flying
That’s it.
“A Day in the Life” brilliant but for Me the most impactful songs were Eleanor Rigby, Fool on the Hill, Strawberry Fields, Tax Man, “Every Man/Woman songs” relatable, universal messaging
You should make your own lists!
Obviously the writer(s) were doing shots with Jann Wenner ( 😉 or maybe Kramzer.. 😂 ) to put so many Macca songs on the bottom end
I'd put 'You Know My Name in my Top Ten...true story
congrats guys on the soon to be 15,000 k subs that are to be attained soon !!!🎉🎉🥳🥳

#179 ballad of john and yoko
#173 no reply
#156 savoy truffle

my other observation is the high scores of the early beatles hits off the 1st couple or so albums that i am not as into as the general public

Hey, bengal. I agree with you that it's a crazy list. Great example on where you would place songs. 🎶💜💜
@@weirddebbiem1619 hey thanx t, that is where they placed them, i would rate them all higher , and come together is my #1 beatles song💜💜
@@bengalgangster Oh, okay. Thanks for the correction. I had to look away when the guys were scrolling. Come Together would be in my top ten. 🎶💜💜
Great run-through. I pretty much agree with everything you said.
We wanted your attention and we got it. Who stepped in it now?

And Rain ahead of Hey Jude every time.
I like Rain and Hey Jude about the same.
@@scottanthonyweidner8692 Hey Jude is pretty overplayed by me, so my issue rather than the songs. And Rain is from my favorite Beatles period. Great songs and a great sound.
Rain is now the most overrated Beatles song thanks to you and Jason. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic He is a man to be trusted on all things Beatles
"Rain" had the potential to be one of the coolest recordings ever, if the lads had nailed that Indian harmony part in the chorus, but they didn't quite get it, John doesn't get the intonation right on one note, which imo needed that Indian quarter tone thing, the whole track would have been beyond epic, if he got that right, even Joe would have loved it, perhaps even Kramzer ;-)
I was expecting much worse, especially when I saw "Good Day Sunshine" at 214. But it's a pretty standard top ten. Not mine, of course, but nothing too egregious.
Bill Wyman has a great piece that sort of defends Mick Jagger against the "Brenda" stuff in the Keith Richards book.
maybe bill wyman is an alias of kramzer, hence the anti mccartney bias ;-)
I was 12 year’s old when the Beatles broke up big fan then and now. If you were following them post-Beatles, the vitriol Lennon and Paul had was so painful to watch considering how much of their music was about love. I rank Now and Then much higher as a result feel it’s John coming to terms with his anger and feelings. Without that experience or context can see people liking it less.
I would definitely place Rain in front of Hey Jude!
About Roll Over Beethoven at #187: "A creditable early lead vocal on the Chuck Berry classic by George Harrison, who loved the song. It was a stage favorite that is a little tepid on record."
I'm not complaining about the ranking so much because it is a cover but "tepid"? Screw that guy. This is a great version, much more energetic than Stones' covers of Chuck Berry; the Rolling Stones were more into the groove.
I'm not sure if any of the 1995 songs and "Now and Then" should even be on a list like this. Are they Canon? I do like "Now and Then" better after listening to it a few times, but is it isn't really a Beatles song.
Absolutely agree.
Clearly, they're not a Lennon fan if Happiness is a warn gun is out of the top 100! Also, 'because' below Multiple mccartney tunes including why dont we do it in the road😂
Doesnt seem like a fan of Harrison either.... maybe just not a beatles fan😂
If you think is clickbait you clearly havent read it.
i think they used a randomizer on this one 😂
I like his writing a lot
I feel good about this because I feel like Joe’s ranking The Beatles songs is coming 🤞(on Patreon, at least)

Just curious, next band ranking? Upcoming show schedule posted somewhere? Thanks.

Helter Skelter at 101 is silly ! Top 30 for sure.
Well, that was traumatic.
Great video. Would rather see top 200 songs of the sixtys ranked! or any or all decades really.
I remember stumbling across Vulture's pink floyd song ranking years ago--equally as terrible!
I have an anti- McCartney bias but I wouldn't put "Good Day" there, it would be in my Top 50 at least. That's an insane placing . Then again I would probably put "When I'm 64" last, having hated it ever since I was forced to sing it at school aged 7 in 1970.
Here was my bottom 20 - which did NOT include any of the 90's songs or Now And Then:
210) Revolution 9 209) Devil In Her Heart 208) Matchbox 207) Maxwell's Silver Hammer 206) Good Night 205) Maggie Mae 204) Dig It 203) I'm Happy Just To Dance With You 202) Mr. Moonlight 201) A Taste of Honey 200) You Like Me Too Much 199) Honey Pie 198) Wild Honey Pie 197) I Wanna Be Your Man 196) Honey Don't 195) Hold Me Tight 194) Little Child 193) Dizzy Miss Lizzie 192) Ob-la-di Ob-la-da 191) The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill
I'd probably put "Free As A Bird," "Real Love," and "Now And Then" somewhere in the 140's thru the 170's.
Fine with all of those except “Happy Just to Dance.”
It is a pretty pedestrian song- one of their bad ones anyway.@@scottanthonyweidner8692
I love Honey Pie.
@@etamommy Yeah, I call 🐎 💩 on that characterization of it, but we are all entitled to our own opinions.
Flying right above Helter Skelter and Happiness is a Warm Gun around the 100 mark smh 🤦
1. Strawberry Fields
--- end of discussion. Greetings from Leipzig/ germany 😌
I want to hate this list but part of me respects that it appears to be some random weirdos list rather than carefully curated and uncontroversial
There would be no such thing as an uncontroversial ranking of Beatles songs, albums, eras, hair styles, band members, moustaches, etc and etc. Such a thing is simply not possible because Beatles fans these days appear to be pretty pedantic about their Fave Four.
Leonard Bernstein loved Good Day Sunshine. Take that Vulture!
This list feels like a troll. "A Day in the Life" at number 1 is the only ranking I can agree with.
The anti McCartney bias still makes me laugh.. I love all the 3 main songwriters in the band , but I always suspected that McCartney passing away will turn many of these lists upside down… sadly
I feel like there’s an anti-Harrison bias in here too.
Its the point. They want to make bad picks to get noticed. Pretty pathetic, if you think about it.
I'm not a fan of Good Day Sunshine, but i wouldn't say it's the worst.
As long as “Maxwell”, “Piggies” and “Why Don’t We Do It In The Road” exist, they have that market cornered.
@@terminallumbago6465 I do like Piggies. I wouldn't say that is one of the best but I do like it.
My # 1 Tomorrow Never Knows at a respectable # 12 . Highlight of a generally lackluster list.
I feel like this Bill Wyman guy who isn't the bassist for the Stones just doesn't like The Beatles that much.
NME just came out with a ranking and it's 1000x better than Vulture's. I only looked at the bottom 20 and top 20 but it's definitely solid.
Sgt. Pepper reprise higher than the main song, lol.
Bill Wyman is Kramzer under a pseudonym.
Sites like Vulture live up to their name - they know their lists are GARBAGE and that Beatles fans know it too and will click on them because it creates a response. They win because they get a reaction, whether it’s positive or negative.
Revolution 9 is #9 in my top 10.
MAGGIE MAY AT 94. This guy's just trolling.
I think the Vulture ate some bad meat before making his choices. I think it's too early to rate "Now and Then."
Wow, I definitely wouldn't put Now and Then that low. To me, it's a mid-tier Beatles song
Harry Nillson's cover of She's Leaving Home is pretty good. Also Aretha Franklin's cover of The Long and Ridding Road is great as well. My least favorite is Oba di Oba Di how is this song on the blue album best of is beyond me.
prefer ob la di ob la da over maxwell's silver hammer any day. i dont understand why ob la di gets such a bad rap
@@ryrythefryguy4645 It's too corny and sappy. The Kinks were better at these type of cutsey songs.

Writer BIll Wyman (not the bass player) is usually better than this, but boy is this bad. "In My Life" at 42 is a travesty.

did they miss out What's the New Mary Jane? which is way down for me. or did i miss it in the list? Overall terrible list.
I'm the same with J here the more I hear Now and Then the less I like it and the more Lennon's voice does seem manipulated/retuned.
Ranking all the songs is a silly idea imo. Maybe a top 50 for people unfamiliar with all their best songs. Have to agree with Mr Wyman in respect of Maxwell's silver hammer tho, awful song imo. The only reason some like it is because it's by The Beatles. Stuart
Why does everyone get brain worms when talking about Maxwell. It’s a brilliant, perfect little gem. Twisted yet hummable. - Joe
