  • Welcome to the Artificial DM. In this series called D&D Cantrips & How to Use Them, we will be answering the question, What is a Cantrip? Dungeons and Dragons is a wonderful imaginative Role Playing Game that has a variety of different mechanics and abilities available to the players. Some of those abilities should be explored and broken down for a better understanding- and in this series we shall be taking a look at every cantrip and explaining what makes it beneficial and for what reasons. This video is just an introduction to Cantrips to help give a better understanding on what a Cantrip actually is, how to obtain a cantrip for your character, and an explanation as to the reasoning for choosing cantrips. Be sure to leave me a comment below if there is a particular cantrip that you want to be covered first!
    Don't forget to like and subscribe if you want to be inspired for your next D&D Session.
    Thanks to all of you who voted! This was a neat project, and I've got a few of my opinion videos brewed up for use.
    Have a story to tell? Or have a particular story you want read? Leave it in the comments, send me a message over on Reddit at u/Artificial_DM, or via email.
    Thanks for watching! Hope you feel inspired.

    I only pick cantrips based on the character traits, personality and his/her backstory.
    It makes no sense in taking crazy damage cantrip if the character is a gentle peaceful man.

    I'm trying to get back into dnd after like 5 years... your channel is helping me learn again and learn all the new stuff that I never used or knew about but I was wondering if you know of anything else I can use to learn as well

      Hey, glad that I could be some help. I can shoot you about half a dozen channels that I recommend for players to check out. Some of them are as follows...:
      Zee Bashew
      XPtoLvl3
      Runesmith
      Dungeon Dudes
      Dawnforged Cast
      How to be a great GM
      Chance's D&D Spellbook
      Passive Perception
      Monsters of Tabletop
      Nerdarchy
      WASD20
      Sherlock Hulmes
      Those are all channels that are off the top of my head in relation to giving helpful information. It really boils down to which side of the DM screen you want to be. I would give each of them a look- some of them are smaller than others, but they all have great ideas for running and playing games. If it is a matter of learning how to play 5th Edition, send me a note on one of my social medias or an email- I can send you some suggestions and tips. If it is more along the lines of where to find people to play with, you can look into the Reddit r/lfg. It's a subreddit dedicated to connecting digital TTRPG players all around the world via Discord and Roll20. Speaking of Discord though, I should have a Discord up and operational either today or tomorrow, which would be another way to get into contact with me.

      @@ArtificialDM thank you so much for all the information and resources, I'll definitely keep an eye out for the discord, I'm very out of practice and have forgotten a lot about playing, so I'm sure you or other people in the discord will be able to help me as well with re learning how to play.

    Guidance is such a good cantrip, like sure some areas it won't help but putting that on yourself/someone else then someone giving you a help action giving you +1 to a +4 to your skill checks is amazing. Need to jump somewhere? Just guidance yourself before hand. Thinking of pick pocket someone? Guidance then go for it. About to sneak? Guidance. About to tell a lie? Guidance. About to intimidate? Guidance. It takes 1 dip and you can give it to other players but you do ned to touch them.
    Also Bloodhunter is Homebrew it's just made by famous DnD star

    • @ArtificialDM
      @ArtificialDM  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, Guidance is a great Cantrip! Reusable mini-Bardic Inspiration that has versatility in all three gaming scenarios.
      Yeah, even though Matt Mercer's Blood Hunter is still a Homebrew character class, being as the D&D Beyond Website lists it under the "Official Classes", I figured it was still relevant to mention it there. I feel that down the line the Blood Hunter would be a class implemented into a new adventure (like how the Artificer was added), or when Wizards decide to make a 6th edition, then the Blood Hunter would probably be added.

      Bloodhunter is on it's way too be legal or Official. Matthew Mercer has been working on it according to Matthew Mercer's twitter. As explorers guide is legal to wildemount. It takes the same position as Artificer where it's up to the DM's discretion.
      Also Guidance requires a vocal and a Somatic to cast so using it to pick pocket or stealth would require a divine Soul Sorcerer

    Nice job on the video. I am already more than familiar enough with how cantrips work; I just wanted to see how you'd handle a non-story video. (You should keep making more videos like this, by the way)
    And yes, good point in reminding people that cantrips are useful for non-casters as well. Since they scale with total character level, they remain relevant even at high levels. That's not even mentioning the versatility that a single cantrip or two offers a class. Put Booming Blade onto a Swashbuckler Rogue and watch as enemies get locked in place while being sneak attacked. Even "fluff" cantrips like Prestidigitation can be useful for those characters. Ever watched a Barbarian try to intimidate someone? Probably. Ever watched that same Barbarian intimidate an entire room in one move by using Thaumaturgy to make his war cry three times louder while using the second cast of it to cause tremors in the ground during said war cry? Now *that's* scaring fools with style.

    • @ArtificialDM
      @ArtificialDM  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey, I appreciate that you took the time to watch the video! I'll probably make a few of these- maybe not as consistent as the stories content, but it would be enjoyable to at least crack out a couple of these a month.
      Exactly! The use of Cantrips to make the different classes to feel a little more varied makes them far more enjoyable. I love your analogy with the Barbarian using Thaumaturgy. Hopefully I don't steal it now. xD

      @@ArtificialDM I will look forward to seeing more content like this; I'm glad that you plan to make more. And feel free to use the Barbarian idea. I literally made that up while I was making the post. Having someone's Barbarian screaming like they are going Super Saiyan 3 is an idea I'd be happy to know someone used.

    Hello!!! I have a question. I was talking to a friend about something and I was just wondering when you're choosing cantrips do you absolutely have to choose based on your class/race or can you just choose whatever one you want? I still don't know too much about DND sadly.

    • @alexischatman9108
      @alexischatman9108 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For a long while I thought we could just choose any so I'm kind of confused now.

    • @ArtificialDM
      @ArtificialDM  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are Class requirements for most Cantrips, and in order to find those out, look at the associated Class Spell List. For example, Eldritch Blast is a Warlock exclusive Cantrip.
      However, some Cantrips are shared between multiple Classes- such as Prestidigitation and Mage Hand.
      There are no Race exclusive Cantrip, but by choosing some Races, you can gain an extra Cantrip in a Class you are not playing. One example is Thaumaturgy. Thaumaturgy is a Cleric Class spell, but all Tieflings gain Thaumaturgy naturally, so you can be a Level 1 Rogue Tiefling and still be able to cast Thaumaturgy, even though you are not playing as a Cleric.
      There are additional ways you can gain extra Cantrips, such as Magic Items, Feats, Level Ups, and Subclasses. By those additional ways, you can generally avoid the restrictions of the Class Spell List. When you first make your character, be sure to look over the Class Spell List when choosing the Cantrips you want. :D
      Hope that helps!

      @@ArtificialDM Thank you so much!!!! This makes me feel a lot better!!! :-) Me and my friend had a bit of an argument over this because the character I am playing recently is a life cleric and she had bond fire as one of her cantrips and then I wanted to add Gust to the list but I've never been corrected about how to properly use cantrips before when I first started playing DND so I was confused

    Cantrips can be chosen once right and maybe rangers should get some paladins are alresdy to op and rangers just feell like their magic is wild and inate and thought out they should have their own wild cantrips Hombrew?

  • @ronn-ammon8975
    @ronn-ammon8975 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I like the concept of flavoring cantrips and even higher spells. But the notion of ANYbody being able to get ANY cantrip seems potentially very problematic.
    Particularly with cantrips like Firebolt, Witchbolt and the like having better range and damage than a lot of missile weapons. Thrown axes, hammers, spears etc. could become obsolete for PCs if everyone can fire powerful spell bolts at will as much as they want. Much of the flavor and appeal of fighters, warriors, etc. could be radically ruined. It's great that low level casters aren't wimpy one trick ponies anymore, but making their 'opening shots, available to any/everyone just nullifies what they've gained.
    And while some may see it as 'spell caster snobbery' I think it really diminishes Wizards particularly if 'Gruntt the Barbarian', who like most of his peeps can't even read, can just start firing off wizardly spellbolts whenever they want. And if that's the case, what's stopping devious GMs from giving such powers to 'Slobb, the Thug', or 'Snott the Goblin'?
    If all DM's insist PCs have backstories that rationalize their abilities it may not be that bad, but I've seen too many get by on a 'aw c'mon he's my character, just let me do 'cause it lets 'em kick butt! Background is just nitpick'n!' argument.
