    Fun fact about Norwegians: We have a serious recognition complex. You may likely notice how happy Norwegians get every time they're mentioned by other countries, or how proud they can get when people say nice things about their countries. This is very likely because of the fact that Norway had long lacked an identity due to being in union with both Denmark and Sweden. It's only 110 years since Norway became truly independent for the first time in hundreds of years. Because of this, it would seem like the Norwegian population subconsciously feels that there is still something to prove. This is why we absolutely hate being mistaken for Swedes too. Go figure.

      ***** Only people who dont have any experience with Scandinavians mistake Norwegians for Swedes. I have never been to any Scandinavian country, but I have met Scandinavians, and that little bit of experience has enabled me to distinguish, in most cases, Norwegians, Swedes and Danes. I dont know if you are aware of it, but you all look slightly different to each other. Also, the mentality is not the same, which additionally enables people to make distinctions between the three groups. For example, I can usually distinguish a Norwegian girl from a Swedish or Danish one. Finally, I must say once more that your Norwegian girls are the best as compared to the Swedish and Danish ones. Greetings. :-)

      MrLeo751 Thank you for that. I would very much agree that we generally look different from one another, but you would be surprised at how often foreigners (particularly Americans) tend to mistake us for Swedes. Where are you from, friend?

    • @MrLeo751
      @MrLeo751 9 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      ***** Well, forget Americans. They have a very poor understanding of people outside the US. I am from Serbia. You probably dont know this, but before the 9th Century your Norwegian Vikings colonised tha Balkans, where they were welcomed by my fellow Serbs. The Serbian name for Vikings is 'Varyazy'. Occasionally we discover Viking gold over here. We also have blond kids, compliments of your Vikings. Beautiful kids. Norwegians are very popular over here. There are also Serbs working in Norway. Greetings. :-)

      MrLeo751 That's very interesting. Thank you for sharing that with me. I am not very surprised though, as contrary to popular belief, the vikings were usually a very peaceful people. You probably know this, but they were often a lot more interested in exploring and trading than the plundering a pillaging that they are so well known for. They particularly got very well along with cultures that were very different from their own. The men of the north held a very deep respect for all things different, which is quite different from most other European countries at the time.

    • @MrLeo751
      @MrLeo751 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      ***** I know that Vikings were also excellent traders. Some years back a Finnish genetisist explained to me the movement of Vikings. I was surprised, since I knew almost nothing of that. The problem is that Viking history is not tought in schools, and people only know superficial facts about them. For example, I didnt know that the Norwegian king Harold Hardrada served in the Balkans as a knight before he became king of Norway, which was a pleasant surprise. Hope to visit Norway some day. Greetings. :-)

    I think it's also worth to mention, that while our prisons are kept to
    a high standard, they are also heavily focused on rehabilitation.
    As such, the re-incarceration rates are very low.

    • @Top10Archive
      @Top10Archive  9 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      We're glad you enjoyed the video :) That's exactly what prisons are supposed to be.. Very few people need to spend the rest of their lives in prison; most prisons in the United States make inmates even more criminal - the U.S system is made to get people to become permanent criminals. The vast majority of people can be rehabilitated.. Our hats are off to you Norwegians ;)

    • @desktopkitty
      @desktopkitty 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Top10Archive I absolutely agree (with you and with ColdNorwegian). I'm an American (in Texas) and some of my Norwegian friends asked me what I thought about the outcome for Anders Behring Breivik. They were comparing what his punishment would be if he lived in Texas. To sum up our discussion, I pretty much told them what you're saying. I think the system in the U.S. is completely backwards. I told them, our way is obviously not better. The whole system in the U.S. needs to be rethought out.

      ColdNorwegian I am an Norwegian too. The prison system is a joke! It may sound nice and humane on paper, but we don't get any justice. There is almost no punishment for rape, voilence, robbery, childabuse and so on. But if you don't pay your taxes, the government throws you in jail for sure.
      People come from other countries and do alot of crime because they know they'll not get punished. And if they go to prison, the standard is higher than many hotels. The law-abiding citizens like me, who have a full job are the real loser here. We get no justice, have to pay sickening amount of taxes to keep half the population on welfare. It's not fair!

    • @ettena93
      @ettena93 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hypercube1729 While I am appreciative of how well our government takes care of us, I have to agree on this. There are a lot of flaws. You do not get as "rewarded" for having a higher education and making a lot of money as you do in the states, because you have to pay an insane amount of taxes just because... well, just because you make a lot of money. And I have seen young, healthy people who mooch on welfare just because they don't feel like working. And they do more than OK, practically sucking money from the tax payers. It's like constantly giving a treat to a puppy for pissing inside the house, you get nowhere. It's really not ideal, seeing as there's a lot of people who get sick and deserve their welfare after years of working hard. And you will most likely get more time in jail for stealing a purse than for raping a young girl... yeah, not gonna go further on that topic. Sometimes Norway is too much of a good guy, and should give more back to the people who deserve it instead of pissing it away on lazy, criminal freeloaders.

    • @Hypercube1729
      @Hypercube1729 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      CallMeEuphoria I couldn't agree more. The ideology may sound humane on paper, but it's not fair.
      The system punishes hard work and success (by huge amount of taxes), and they reward laziness (by giving huge amount of welfare) and there is almost no punishment for crime (by almost no prisontime, luxurious jails etc.)
      Who are the loseres in this system? It's the regular law-abiding citizens with full time jobs like you and me. We have to pay for this system.

      Japan's prison system is pretty harsh, yet they also have one of the lowest crime rates. The incarceration and recidivism rates have little to do with the prison system and much more to do with societal problems.

    Congratulations to Norway for staying out of the EU. The Brits have now joined you, and pretty soon the whole EU is going to disintegrate. Looks like Norwegian Vikings are the smartest of all Vikings. They have the best girls too.

    • @dojohansen123
      @dojohansen123 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The brits "have joined us"? As if. It's not even clear that they actually will leave the EU, and much less what kind of deal(s) they'll get if not. IMO Norway chose the worst of all possible relations by basically giving up our self-determination for access to the free market, but without a right to vote and, more importantly, speak, in the EU parliament and other institutions.
      In my view, Norway, Sweden and Denmark should have all been in the EU and worked together. We have a lot in common culturally. Combined, our purchasing power is considerably greater than the size of the populations (about 19 milllion people combined) suggests, and we'd be an economic power comparable to Spain or so.
      But instead we've chosen to be in the hallway, trying desperately to influence decisions in spite of not being members. Both Europe as a whole and we are worse off because of it. And 95% of all legislative changes in Norway are now Stortinget (parliament) rubber stamping EU regulations. Idiotic!

      Indeed. It's a good leftist country. The country with the highest human development index is social democratic Norway. Dominated by the Norwegian Labour Party for years. StatOil, which is mostly publically-owned, is the most successful company. See "Norwegians become crown millionaires as sovereign wealth fund hits benchmark". And more than 50% of Norway's workforce are part of trade unions. Social democrats know how to use resources well. In Britain, Thatcher wasted North Sea Oil's revenue on tax cuts for the wealthy. See "Thatcher and North Sea oil - a failure to invest in Britain's future". But that won't change the mind of her dim-witted apologists. A good move of Norway to stay out of the neoliberal EU that destroyed Greece with right-wing austerity.

      +SomeRandomGuy :P WHAT KIND OF HYSTORY DO THEY TEACH IN SCANDINAVIA AREA ?You are so bizarre.. I thought that the Christians monks had taught something to the Nordic population....but the real fact is completely different. The Nordic population forget that 6 o 7 generations ago they were so primitive as the current unknown tribe in Amazonia or Congo in AfricaThe History of Scandinavia and 99% of the posts are in English... VERY FUNNY... Are You ashamed of your language ?
      You have ZERO background ( Like the black people in USA ) ... I can understand your choice to discuss in English rather than in your native- mother tongue language….. You have nothing to be proud of.. .. you have nothing to boast about.. no contribution to any civilization neither something else.. as numbers.. Philosophy.. Stone made building.... Law.. Roads...Science...Algebra.. Geometry... Mathematicians.. Inventions.... Arts ( Music Painting Sculptures and so on )
      To me (and 95% of the Italians) ...Vikings and bingo-bongo population of deep Congo in Africa were at the same intellectual level... maybe the Vikings were more primitive and very close to wild animals. And perhaps they were cannibals.
      Why you don't accept the true fact that Scandinavian population was so primitive and wild compared Italian people .
      Your bis grandfather used to live in a cavern in the forest.... My bis grandfather used to live in a palace along “Canal Grande” channel in VENICE..Do you see the difference?
      ...YOU CAN'T CHANGE THE HYSTORY... How can you be proud of the primitive and wild Vikings ? Ask some English with culture ( very few ) why Shakespeare set most of his plays in Italy to depict Italian ( and not English ) society from Roman EMPIRE to REINASSANCE... And the remaining Shakespeare ‘s novels set in England have a lot to do with Italians and Italy.. At Shakespeare time London had only 20 o 30 stone made houses.. while in Scandinavia there were still the cannibals and tribe.. as in Africa..

And don't forget, Norway has the highest number of atheists in the world. it looks like the more religious you are the more sadistic you'd become.

    Source: Native Norwegian in his late 30's living all his life in Norway.
    Many foreigners have an exaggerated romantic impression of Norway. Here's some facts to adjust that picture.
    Comments to fact 10:
    Grandiosa is very low quality food, and very unhealthy, the sales of grandiosa has plunged as more and more people have realized this.
    Source: e24.no/naeringsliv/selger-mindre-frossenpizza-grandios-fabrikkene-maa-permittere/20364677
    While there's wild game in Norway, the majority of people buy food in super-markets, but the focus on healthy foods have increased the latest years.
    Comments to fact 9:
    The viking festivals. I've barely heard of these my entire life. And I do not know anyone that ever went to those. Besides, viking means "thief", and the original vikings were pure savages that raped, murdered and plundered foreign territory. This is nothing to be proud of. Also, helmets with horns were not used by the original vikings.
    Comments to fact 7:
    Studies at university is not free of charge. At first sight it might seem so, but it's state financed through the numerous taxes that you have to pay throughout your lift. In addition you can finance your studies with a loan from "Lånekassen", but most of that needs to be paid back with interest. So while education system is quite good, it's not free as in free beer.
    Comments to fact 6:
    Norway is not a good protector of the environment. The government is just like any other government, this means that money is prioritized over anything else. Please google the latest debacle about search for oil in the delicate northern areas of Norway.
    It's true that on the surface Norway claim to not invest in unethical industries and companies, in reality that's not happening, and we're also a substantional contributor in the arms industry, Norwegians just don't like to talk about that loudly. Norway sells weapons worth billions each year. Source: no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norsk_v%C3%A5penindustri
    Comments to fact 5:
    Norway originally sent Christmas trees to Rotterdam, Reykjavik and London. However we stopped sending to all of them except London. Source: www.osloby.no/nyheter/Oslo-vil-kutte-julegran-gaven-7529478.html
    This is for strategical and economical reasons.
    Comments to fact 4:
    The knighted penguin? This is a complete non-event. Never heard of it, and seeing it mentioned as a fact about Norway is very weird. Also the rest of the names that's presumably knighted seems to have taken place in Scotland/England. For example Bill Gates was knighted in England by Dronning Elizabeth. In Norway nobody cares about these titles, and if you came and flaunted one, most people would just shrug their shoulders. Elton Jon was also knighted by Queen Elisabeth II, this also in England. The penguin, Nils Olav, lives in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was knighted by british general mayor Euan London in 2008. The only association this penguin has to norway is that it is "adopted" by the norwegian army because lieutenant Nils Egelien took a personal interest in the penguins at the Edinburgh Zoo. I don't see how this fit's into a "facts about Norway video", as barely anyone in Norway has ever heard about this.
    Comments to fact 3:
    Luxury prisons. Those calling a prison glamouros and luxurious are misguided and uneducated. Prison sentence is about removing your freedom, and there are different levels of sentencing. Some has more freedoms than others, but in general,the focus is on rehabilitation, so when the prison sentence is done, ideally the prisoner should re-enter the society as a useful resource. This is best done by education and helping the prisoner to reform. Norway has a much larger success for reformation than the US. It's true there's no death penalty, but as for life sentences, these are usually 21 years, and sometimes prisoners are released before that because of good behaviour, however there are some prisoners that are kept for prolonged time as long as they are deemed a threat to society, so in that regard the life sentence is effective.
    Comments to fact 2:
    Butter shortage. Exaggerated media storm. Was barely noticed for most people.
    Comments to fact 1:
    While Norway has many good winter sportsmen and women, it's an undisputable fact that due to Norway's resources and the miniscule size of many winter sports, Norway do have an unfair advantage.
    As for anyone holding Norway in high regard, yes there are many great things about Norway, but if you start digging, you will learn that there are many things that's not that great as well. One very serious shortfall is that of political correctness, for instance it's considered tabu to critisize multiculturalism. Norwegians in general also are shy and are hesitant to speak up in fear of social condemnation and retribution. They're often quite uptight and serious and is easily offended. Because of the weather, the general attitude and mood usually does not soften up until summertime.
    Norway is also the most corrupt country among the nordic countries:
    www.thelocal.no/20131203/norway-most-corrupt-in-the-nordics-report
    The state bueracracy is staggering, and you're set for a very hard time and not necessarily fair treatment if you're lucky enough to be the victim of a state agency. The arrogance of said bueracracy is mind-boogling, and even when it makes a wrong it most often claim it's not.
    The planning of making roads and building anything noteworthy takes a very long time. Sometimes 20-30 years only to plan making a road. The health care system, the child protection service system, the legal system, and the welfare system all come with their unique challenges and problems, which you hopefully never will experience.
    Norway is also known for having a rather inhuman policy in regards to asylum seekers. As often humans who have made roots and even had children and made themselves ingrained in a local society are expelled after having their case tried for years and years, and then they often do not even have time to plan, and are sent to a foreign country on short notice.
    The police is a chapter for itself. They're like a state in the state, and as an ordinary citizen you need to comply or else face the consequences. The police have a free card to do in essence whatever they want. There are no checks and safeguards in place. Normal everyday crimes are not priortized, and this is a huge problem, esp in the citites.
    The multiculturalism experiment is not successful and has led to continued social unrest and conflict.
    As a citizen, the government will not listen to you. The only way to be heard is to start a pressure group or organization and make connections with the "right" people, and then broadcast your message over and over again. If you contact a governmental agency by e-mail or normal letter, expect months before you receive an answer, and more often than not, the answer just refers you to another state agency. Ie. bureacracy.
    When state employees makes mistakes, even those in very high positions, there are very seldom consequences. Usually, if the offence is severe, they're simply put somewhere else in the same organization, and as in most other countries, it's about who you know, not what you know in regards to positions. Officially this will be denied, but reality and official policy is not always the same.
    Most municipalities fails horribly on service to the inhabitants:
    www.nrk.no/livsstil/kommunene-med-best-og-verst-service-1.11287277
    Although it's the full time job of all municipality employees to serve inhabitants, most do not take their job seriously, as when you get a municipality job, you're mostly set for life, you're elevated above the citizens and you can work as little as you want with barely no consequences for your job.
    Take care, enjoy Norway!

    The electricity fact is wrong. Norway's production of electricity is 99% hydroelectric. We actually produce more hydroelectric energy than the total consumption. The problem is that production peaks is the spring and summer (when the snow melts and fills up the dams), but consumption peaks in the winter. So in the spring we sell the excess energy to other countries. In the winter, when consumption peaks, we can't produce enough electricity, so we purchase nuclear electricity from Sweden. So basically, we produce more hydroelectric energy than the total consumption, we just need a big ass battery to save it for the winter in order to become 100% clean.

      Mr. Mastercard - people from Russia came to Norway to commit crime so they could serve time, they earned more money than working in Russia, I think the police eventually sent them back to Russia without any punishment

    In 1995, Norway launched a rocket (not explosive but a sounding rocket) that was being noticed by Russia. And many people wasn't done thinking about the cold war. So because of a rocket, Russia and USA had their nuclear weapons ready for launch...so yeah...luckily no nuclear weapons were launched. + It's illegal to die in a city called Longyearbyen on the island Svalbard and the ex prime minister Jens Stoltenberg used to play the game Age of Empires.
