    I’m just grateful anyone listens to my rambling videos at all 😂 My apologies for the misinterpretation! I’m an adjunct writing instructor at a public university, and have listened to Reef Therapy on my walks to campus since the early days of the podcast. I think some nuance is probably lost in translation between the video format and the audio-only version!
    Also, thank you all for the kind words about my channel. Reef Therapy (and ReefBuilders in general) has always played an important part of the hobby for me, especially since my town has no LFS or reef club, so it meant a lot to hear that. I have the utmost respect for Raj in taking over RB and keeping things going in such a refreshed and positive way. I was also thrilled, as a longtime BahamaLlama fan, when Remy joined RT - home run. And as Salem well knows, I love hearing his perspective on everything reefkeeping, and really appreciate how he makes the tough-to-grasp parts of reefing understandable for the everyday reefers like myself.
    Keep up the awesome work. What all of you do means a lot to a great many of us in this amazing hobby.

    Salem - I'm a 62 y/o reefer in Topeka. I'm in the process of a 180 build. I have reefed on and off since 1990. Before youtube I learned reefing from Moe and Sprung. I have never had mentors to personally learn from and share the hobby. I am a product of the internet. So how do I reach out to your Kansas City clubs?

    Remy I had the same problem with pale acro. My experience, I added PNS and benapets and thr corals started to color up. Maybe look in to captiv8 ISOL8 MT. I started adding that as well and really noticed colors pop. Just my 2 cents. Good luck with the purple tang buddy.

  • @johngraves2185

    Remy, check your PO4 for pale sps. If you’re feeding your fish, then there’s enough nitrogen, but phosphorus is more important. If you need more nitrogen, then dose ammonium chloride, corals can utilize it much easier than nitrate.

    There is literature claiming that if you don't reintroduce any new ich parasites into your tank from now on, the parasite tends to "burn" itself out after about a year, losing its virulence and gradually fading away. But seriously, I'm listening to a reef tank discussion by people that don't quarantine? Quarantine can fail, but come on!?

      @@RB-Raj "Burgess and Matthews (1994) were attempting to maintain a viable population of C. irritans which could be used in later studies. To maintain the parasite populations, they needed host fish in order for the trophonts to feed and continue the life cycle. Each host fish was only used once in a process of serial transition such that none of the hosts would die or develop an immunity. While the procedure worked very well and enabled them to maintain populations for some time, the viability of the populations decreased with time and none of the 7 isolates they used survived more than 34 cycles, around 10 to 11 months. They suggest this is due to senescence and aging in cell lines is well recognised in Ciliophora.
      The presence of aging cell lines in C. irritans suggests that an aquarium that has been running for longer than 12 months without any additions is unlikely to have any surviving "Ich" parasites, yet another exception to "Ich" always being present."

    Isn’t the consensus that Uronema is in something like 95%+ of tanks older than 3 years old? It doesn’t seem to be something that requires starting over if it’s in your tank. However, it’s definitely something to be aware of and something to plan for in the event of a stress event that causes an outbreak of Uronema. Know which of your fish are susceptible (chromis, anthias, angels, etc), know how to spot the symptoms, and know how you will treat symptomatic fish.

    Could consistent changes in water parameters make for hardier coral (not ph, but salinity, alk, Ca etc,)? Or is it detrimental, stress the corals and in turn they get infected?

    • @salemclemens6148
      @salemclemens6148 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Much of the coral stress response is genetically conserved. Constant small exposure to stress would likely lead to breakdown of the holobiont and cause dysbiosis/a pathogenic event just like a large swing would. It's all about how much damage is done by reactive oxygen species in the corals attempt to defend itself from infection and how well its able to repair the damage after that stress response. Overtime epigenetic factors may lead to corals becoming hardier in our tanks but this is done via propagation. You'll only see that hardiness increase in new polyp formation as response to stress exposure is encoded overtime. The process of aquaculture is one of artificial selection but because all of this comes down to genetics it is unlikely you would be able to speed up that resilience acquisition process to occur over a single generation. Without outside help multiple generations are required to yield hardier corals. At least those are my current thoughts on this with the information I currently know. But all of this can change as science advances and finds new things.

    • @BIG-ES-
      @BIG-ES- 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@salemclemens6148 Thanks Salem. That makes a lot of sense. I just always see that people freak out over stability and then when something does swing out of balance the corals cant deal with the stress. I didn't even think of generational differences between corals, such a cool thought. It would be interesting to expose certain corals to a certain strain of pathogen repeatedly over generations to see how they can build an immunity

    • @salemclemens6148
      @salemclemens6148 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@BIG-ES- While that would be great unfortunately corals do not possess any form of adaptive immunity. There is some evidence suggesting they may retain some element of non self recognition that is conserved short term but this is very emergent. They rely almost entirely on the innate immune system which is the shoot and ask questions later strategy our white blood cells employ. While I think its very possible to get them accustomed to abiotic stress I think constant exposure to biotic stress would only lead to more sick corals. I break down some of this in my immune response article.
