Main Reasons are: 1) The price is cheaper than Euro Fighter 2) Indian Mmrca result was extensive, comprehensive and elaborate report study done by IAF which was shared globally by the French to show the comparative results. 3) French wepons don't come with many Strings attached. 4) Offers better ToT compared to others.
I remember when around 8 years ago they had zero export deals and were struggling to get any export to keep production going. For that reason they slowed it down to 8 poeces per year. Suddenly Egypt, India amd Qatar sogned the Rafale, then Greece commited and other deals followed.
You see usa bully everybody, intimidated everybody except China and Russia The Rafale is far better and cost less (usa prepare for war and they can get better for less with the Rafale) but they won't admit of course Usa overplayed their hand in the world And their sin (criminal deeds all over the world) is higher than the sky (Let me also sweep in front of my own door) Usa is going down, greed will destroy them I wish hope and pray that China and or Russia will bring an end to usa so my country can also be delivered form the usa oppression (There are good people also in usa, i hope they can also be delivered from their bad politics)
What can they do. They can’t buy F35 so they pick the second best. But for how long. 25 years jet. F35 will have consistency of production. I don’t think Rafael will invest to increase its production line. I believe this is the last major order they will get. Once US open up F35 to other ( when they have G6 jet) than any other jet will face the same problem. Look at F16. This is the true reality. I will be shocked if Rafael can break 500 jets. If none of Europe want it and almost everyone want F35 seal the faith. If Greece can effort they will get all the F35. I don’t think European can produce G6 jet because they can’t even produce a g5 jet. So far 1000 F35. 2500 in ordered. 150 jet per year. Will continue to produce in the next 30-50 years. The best successful jet after F16. I believe F35 will be the most fighter jets in the next 10-15 years. No one come even close. If German ought F35 than you know how good F35 is. If US allow India and Qatar buy F35, do your think they would buy Rafael?
@@Szarko32c that’s because the US was undermining the sales of French equipments like with submarine. Then trump came to power and that created non aligned country wanting no us or Russian equipments… the French fit the bill and countries wouldn’t let the US undermine the Rafale anymore because the primary reason for wanting a Rafale was that it was a none US plane so all US offers no matter the price or plane we’re out… and yes, the US has no second thoughts when it come to selling their stuff and they will use many tactics to do that even if it means stepping in the heads of their allies…
An interesting thing to note: If you replace F16 with Rafale, then you will not have to upgrade your hangar bunker infrastructure, because Rafale is compartable sizewise. Many militaries have to consider indirect costs of the infrastructures.
@@alessiofeIf better at "multi role-ing", consider the following: You know how France has nukes? Well, Rafale is supposed to be able to deliver them. This little maneuvreable jet carries payload 1,5 times higher than it's own weight. They are also capable and qualified to land on US aircraft carriers as well as their own French ones. A peculiar capability I have not heard of. Basically it is a compact, but powerfull multi role/nuclear bomber/naval fighter that is probably more versatile than most jets out there.
@@lemonpepperlouisville4138 I wouldn't find the comparison between single engine and twin engine jet fighters to be fair imo. Each to their own categories.
The Rafale is not an "old" plane which has been modernized. It has always been planed to be a long term project with regular updates, one of the goal being to provide work/job for dassault on long term despite the small French market.
The Rafale is a legacy airframe that started in 1985. It's old but not nearly as crippled as the Typhoon which still has airframes running around with a mechanical radar and lacking in air to ground ability as many have not been upgraded and stupidly it was never built to be multi-role. The Rafale's saving grace is that it has a naval version and was built for multi-role missions.
@@Stealth1337 Defense is not a problem, it’s an opportunity to invest and make industrial, technological and economical gains. Stop thinking like a communist.
Based on technical reviews I've read, Rafale is in fact a very capable aircraft and can fill all needed roles as well. Being old does not mean being outdated: on the contrary, sophisticated systems need time and money to iron out all the kinks. F-35's history is filled with kinks and the design process has been very torturous. Also, the political argument cuts both ways. I am Finnish, and we basically got the F-35 to get closer ties with the Americans. Not a bad thing as such, of course, but something to consider.
Finland also regularly exercises with Norway which already flies F-35s. And it is no small matter that Finnish and Norwegian F-35s will automatically network with each other giving both countries complete situational awareness in the air and on the ground. It is also no small matter that Finnish and Norwegian F-35s will also automatically network with US and Allied F-35Bs and F-35Cs at sea.
@@Chuck_Hooks There is something to that, though I'm not sure if it was something that weighed the scales. Sweden is Finland's closest ally after all. Though the networking abilities might be why USA is so willing to sell them to Finland, due to our geography and all. Not to say Norway is not a valued ally of course.
Also the cost per hour flown is not shown here, and Rafale is MUCH cheaper to fly than the F-35. Considering a NATO pilot should have 180 hours in the cockpit per year, 10K an hour of difference is a huge difference (around 27K/hour for F35 and 16K/hour for Rafale, all in USD)
@@hjvhjvhjv78 All anyone has to do is pick up the phone and call the appropriate authorities in Norway to find out EXACTLY what all F-35 operating costs are since Norway is flying F-35As. People act like this information cannot be obtained among European Allies who already operate F-35s. Can anyone doubt that Finland consulted with its close partner Norway on all of the costs and experiences associated with Norway operating its F-35s? In the end, Finland chose to buy 64 F-35s with its eyes wide open having consulted with Norway first.

Egypt and Indonesia are probably due to threat of CAATSA sanctions preventing them buying Russian. However this sanctions threat makes them annoyed at the US so its either French or Eurofighter and the Rafale seems to be winning that match up a lot recently.
My guess with Egypt is it's just corruption. They have a lot of Russian equipment already, and they're buying everything from everyone. It's entirely pointless, and can't be explained any other way.
@@rkadi6540 Indonesia may not go through with that US weapons deal, it's just to much political cost for a fighter that may be artificially reduced in capability
I'm a international truck driver with a working area in France, agricultural areas. I always unload and work alone outside my truck out in the desolate countryside fields. So many times I see the French airforce practice run their aircraft around these beautiful countrysides, sometimes they fly so low I can look inside the cockpit when they maneuver. One day I was up fixing the roof of my trailer and this Rafale caught me by surprise flying right over. Nearly fell off my ladder. It was awesome.
Latest update: In recent days, after the video was finished, F-35 was in final negotiations for further orders for 88 airframes to Canada. (and 35 airframes to Germany before that.) It is believed those negotiations will lead to firm contract sometime this year.
The Rafale is outselling the F-35 because it's superior in everything except in Radar LO (X-BAND) detection. According to the previous evaluation made in the Netherlands and South Korea the Rafale is Green checked compared to Red or Yellow for the F-35 in : Infrared LO, Supercruise, Subsonic Agility, Transsonic Agility, Supersonic Agility, Acceleration, Missile Loadout, Sensor Fusion, Net Enabled OPS, ALL-Passive SA, High Altitude OPS, Sortie Rate, Maintenance REQ. , Split-Seconds Shots, Cockpit Visibility, Climb Rate, Gun, IR Missile, BVR missile. It would crush it even more if there wasn't corrupt politicians involved in Europe to buy F-35 instead of an European made plane that is better, except obviously for NATO countries that wish the USA give them shared nukes program that is really the only reason to buy the F-35.

I love the description difference : constant attenuation when specifically describing the rafal but never when describing the f35 the « super technologically advanced plane » but back in 2001 when the rafal got out it was a « pretty good plane » there s obviously a bit of american proud here (also on the description of capability where it s way more critical over the rafal but the f35 it s only apparent weakness is the price) A good video nonetheless just a detail to point out
To quote an ex french aircraft carrier pilot, the F35 and Rafale are good planes, but the F35 is still a teenager. Its going to grow and mature while the Rafale, even if less advanced, has been improved upon for many years. Another component of choosing either is that the Rafale has 2 engines, some military would consider it safer given their territory.
Canada just blew that twin engine theory in terms of a large country away with the decision to buy 88 F-35s. Canada will be able draw on the vast networking abilities of F-35s operated by many fellow NATO members. Not to mention Canadian F-35s being able to automatically network with all US and Allied F-35Bs and F-35Cs at sea. Think that isn't a force multiplier?
@@Chuck_Hooks fair point. Still the Rafale is the only non-US aircraft allowed on US aircraft -carriers and also has networking capabilities (far less than the F35 I must admit), its not lacking in interoperability either. And many other reasons can influence the choice of the F35 (political ones) instead of the twin engine Rafale, Canadians are regular US clients. The F35 will be a force in the coming years, the Rafale is now, I stand by my point but respect your own.
@@potriut7570 Respect your points. However, I should also point out that politics works against and for F-35s even within the same country. About three years ago, a German Luftwaffe chief was fired because of his public preference for the F-35. That is not what German political leadership wanted to hear so he was canned. Now, Putin's invasion has suddenly lit a fire under German political leadership to buy 35 F-35s with an eye toward the B-61 role. Politics cuts both ways, for and against, as circumstances change. Rafale is a fine aircraft. But hundreds of F-35Bs alone are going to be operating on at least 18 US amphibs/F-35B carriers, the two UK carriers, the Italian carrier and the two upcoming Japanese F-35B carriers. All European F-35As will automatically network with this huge number of F-35Bs at sea. That is a monster Allied force multiplier. Rafale will never be able to operate at those kinds of numbers at sea. And I didn't even mention Allied networking with F-35Cs off the supercarriers.
@@Chuck_Hooks True, true and true. Communication and informations is one (if not) the greatest force multipliers, one look at Ukraine is enough to see it. I just wish the F35 program did not loose long term affordability and ease of maintenance along the way to cutting edge technology.
@@potriut7570 I can't concede the cost point in part because it is hard for all of us to see beyond just the parochial military needs of each individual country. F-35s are built to be able to automatically plug in to hundreds of sea and land- based F-35s no matter which country actually owns them. Which in turn vastly increases the security of individual countries that operate F-35s. I can't imagine a scenario where Norway alone gets into a serious war that wouldn't get the serious attention of its fellow NATO members and thus bring in hundreds of European and US F-35A,B and Cs to assist. The closest we have seen of something like that in memory was the Falklands war and that was very unique in that NATO was not involved or needed to be. So F-35s are bought to deal with a monster war with Russia or, in the Pacific, with China, which is why Japan is converting two helicopter carriers into F-35B carriers and South Korea is building a new carrier just for its F-35Bs. So in a real sense Norway doesn't just own 52 F-35s. It functionally "owns" hundreds of sea and land-based F-35s that all share battlespace information with each other, 4th generation aircraft and Allied commanders on the ground in real-time. That is what an Alliance is for, to pool and leverage everyone's resources to increase each countries' individual security. What does all that cost? A lot. But it seems to me everyone is getting a lot. Even though we all grumble at the cost in peacetime, we all forget cost if we really need to go to war as an Alliance. Putin's invasion reminds of that reality which is why Canada and Germany have both turned on a dime and are now buying F-35s. .
The f35 is a complicated fighter. It's expensive to run and maintain. Also it requires special crews and getting spare parts can be hard. The baggage that comes with the US doesn't help. Meanwhile the Rafale has nearly equivalent capabilities short of stealth and VTOL. Adding to this that it is probably less than half the cost by the end of their lifetimes. And on a subjective level, the Rafale is hands down one of the best looking fighters ever made.
Plus the fact that French weapon deal is a very no string attached deal, making it the best choice for those who wants to keep their political allegiance closer to neutral. I mean they sell weapon to Argentina during Falkland war goddamnit.
Maintenance Man Hours Per Flight Hour Rate for the F-35A is 4.79, for the U.S. Marine Corps’ F-35B it is 7.48, and for the U.S. Navy F-35C it is 7.55. This means that the F-35C sits more than 1 full day on the ground being maintained per flight hour.
There is two main point lacking in this video, likely because its USA centered view : First. The ITAR regulation is a weapon for commercial war. Nothing more. When Israel tried to sell its second hand F-16 to Croatia USA refused...in order to allow general dynamics to propose it's own. One word also on the "west aligned" point of view, where France wouldn't care to sell to country not align with that. It's not that simple, France will sell to FRENCH ALIGNED INTEREST, which are not necessarily the one of the USA, who sometimes think that is own POV is the one of the west. Second. The F-35 is a newborn, comparable to the Rafale in the early 2000's. It is still plague with major conception defaults, which we are not developing here, but who will take years to solve. In 20 years the F-35 will be a combat proven plane's, will all its capabilities and (let's hope for the one who bought it) its problems resolve. It is what the Rafale is today, a multi role fighter that can approximately do...anything, and be good at every one of them, while not always being the best compared to specialized fighter. In the end, it's a pretty good video, with what I would call a "big brother bias" forgetting a little quickly that aeronautical tech speaking, Europe (and France) are just among the best in the world, no shy of the US one. Just coping with less military funding.
The Rafale is a fair bit cheaper while being good enough for the job. The f35 isnt nearly as bad as people make it out to be, and is pretty cutting edge, but its just way too expensive and cuffs you to the US military industrial complex. Most f35 deals basically equate to a lease agreement rather than actual sales.
@@fajaradi1223 ....they should ask to the chinese and the russian now !...we'll see what they give them... we'll have a good laugh! Africa is 0.7 of French GDP...so the French are really bad looters!...but that will change with the Russians and the Chinese!:)
You just have to hand it to France, they had their fare share of disagreements with NATO due to their pride as a former colonial superpower; they couldn’t stand being de-ranked to a second-rate power in the US-UK dominated alliance, and they even partially withdrew from NATO at one point realizing they couldn’t be in charge or at least on an equal footing with them. They highly valued their military independence, and that’s why they decided to go about developing their own fighters and other military technology instead of participating in joint ventures with other countries. And for one country to develop such a great feat of technology and engineering on their own, even as developed and rich as France is, is very commendable to say the least.
Cooperation is desired in France with other European countries. But it is very difficult, each country is afraid of losing skills, the French have specific needs, for example they want an aircraft capable of doing everything. Air supremacy, ground attack, long range (overseas), marine version... Other countries don't need planes able to do so many things, they just want planes to protect their territory... I think that the day when there will be a solution for that, is when the European Union will have a shared geopolitics. I'm afraid that the FCAS program will know the same end as the previous airplane cooperation programs.
@@antoinebaldur2941 I think the cooperation would still be possible if it, say, resulted in multiple aircraft variants to satisfy each participating country’s needs, the same way that F-35 is made in three different variants but only the B variant designed specifically for the U.S. Marines being STOVL capable. Nevertheless, I’m still glad to see that the French have enough know-how to make a great fighter as Rafale, as well as many other things, almost entirely on their own.
@@Neurosis_Cordis This could be a great solution, I hope they get it right. In any event, we will be hearing about FCAS conflicts for many years to come.
@@Neurosis_Cordis Multiple variants is a false good idea. France saw it with multiple programs (tiger helicopter, jaguar plane...) and the US with the F35 (how much better the plane would be in raw performances if the airframe wasn't designed to hold a big gun to try to replace the A-10 and an additionnal engine in the B variant ?). It makes programs incredibily complicated and expansive and only a Behemoth like the US can do something like that with some "return on investment" (for the F35 we will need a decade or two to see if it was a success or a waste). For a "standard" country developing a single modern fighter is already very hard (in term of money at least), spending money for variants you won't even use and accept reduced performances and/or cost efficiency for what you need because the airframe need to accomodates others needs is hard to accept... Especially when cooperation comes with many other problems (ex: France loves to sell military weapons to everyone, Germany hate it, which is a problem if they produce parts of the plane... France wants to keep all its capabilities in building planes, but other countries want to produce some parts, but if its the case Dassaut won't produce engine for fighter jets for decades, which mean France will lose capabilities...)
To everyone saying it’s difficult to work with the French I can say my personal experience was that was true, but I’m quite certain the French would be happy to work with anyone that will buy their products. ;)
I don't understand why the astonishing amount of problems and failures the F35 faces isn't mantioned in this video... It amaized me how, each time we hear of the F35 outside of the USA, it's regarding a problem discovered or a frame crash... Plus the way you say the Rafale sales are due to politic while not saying the same for the F35 amuse me. The USA use F35 sales as a way to control their allies air capabilities, rendering them dependant for even basic maintenance. I think this video is VERY STRONGLY biased mate.
You are comparing a fifth generation jet to a fourth generation jet with the amount of AI and the overall complexity of the f35 yes they have more bugs but they are also more capable then the Rafael. The bugs are getting fixed you are talking about a jet that was designed 20 years after the Rafael with like I said way more complex. Rafael is more comparable to the f16 then it is to the f35
That is because you are too uneducated and lazy to actually read USAF Budget Overviews or GAO reports which are free to the public via .PDF. At $50mil fly away cost each for Fiscal year 2024 no other aircraft can come close in price to performance. You may want to check on foreign state media and your own confirmation bias because right now you sound like a Russian agent or a crony European Union protectionist.
@@paul-jr4kc The F-35A is an aggressive project and a technological marvel at it's currently $50mil each fly away costs as if FY2024 USAF Budget Overviews and procurement data. EU protectionism and Russian propaganda have lost.
Clearly the video was produced prior to the Canadian decision to buy 88 F-35s. That’s on top of the 36 to Switzerland, 35 to Germany and 64 to Finland. The Indonesians split the order buying Rafael’s and 36 F-15EXs. Egypt is doing the same, splitting the order with F-15EXs.
@@khalidsaiv6613 Surprisingly, I heard Indonesia’s F-15EXs, or F-15IDNs, are going to come with EPAWSS. I don’t believe the EPAWSS have ever been exported before Indonesia was offered the Eagle II.
The reason why Rafale is selling more is the MMRCA competition of the IAF... IAF extensively tested the Rafale and 5 other jets to their capabilities and Rafale along with eurofighter won that competition. IAF chose Rafale due to less cost and logistical issues and the rest is history.
You forgot one of the most crucial points : the Rafale is multirole, meaning it can do all types of job for a fighter, and it does everything well. Even when it comes to air to air engagement, the Rafale has beaten the Eurofighter in international competitions. It is also suited for carrier operations in its naval version (also explaining why India chose it for its navy). And it is considered a 4.5th generation fighter thanks to its low radar signature compared to other 4th generation aircrafts. All in all, you have a reasonably expensive aircraft, which can do everything well, can be operated on aircraft carriers, has some stealth capability, is cheap to operate (lower fuel consumption and lower maintenance cost overall than F-35 for example), and does not suffer from diplomatic threat from its seller (France).
4.75 gen now in its latest F4 version putting it about equal to a block 2 or block 3 super hornet or Gripen NG. An original Eurofighter from 2001 would be a 4.5gen fighter and a F18 hornet from the 80s a 4th gen .... a F-111 from the mid 70s a 3rd gen. An F-22 original without any upgrades would be pretty much equal to a Rafale F4 you would think.... the F22 computers and avionics would be a bit out of date now and its stealth cant be that good now it was designed in the 90s just after the Rafle
It’s because nations are afraid to buy eastern fighters and be side eyed by the west but don’t want to/can’t afford US equipment France has always been the wildcard of the world
@Abhijeet Kundu I don’t know what I’m talking about, huh Says the guy who claims combat jets have a definitive price per unit, no, they don’t, you wouldn’t know what it is to begin with since that information isn’t publicized, all that’s publicized is contract cost and plane count, guess what? There’s more in those than just the planes, different nations pay different amounts for different numbers and services You. Are. Talking. Out. Of. Your. Ass. So for the good of all reason, please stop
One important point is also that when rafale was in competition with US aircraft, even if rafale was "first" in term of efficiency, the "political" aspect make the rafale lose the game,ie: in south Korea :Hereunder an article from 2013: South Korea has acquired 60 F-15s from Boeing since 2002, against the Rafale, which was declared the winner after technical and operational evaluations. Seoul had to change the rules of the game under pressure from Washington by including a political parameter. The South Koreans now want to acquire 60 other combat aircraft by 2021. The decision to relaunch the call for tenders should certainly benefit Lockheed Martin's F-35, disqualified solely because of its price in the initial procedure. And in general, what Washington wants in the land of the Morning Calm is often gospel...
I remember Australia were considering the Rafale at one point. They were going to conduct a six month trial and the Rafale representative relocated to Australia, found schools for his kids etc. Then the trial was off, Australia was going to buy F-35s. Why a trial and comparison wasn't considered necessary anymore was never adequately explained, however it's not the first time it's happened. It's as though the US makes a call and tells Australia what it's going to do. The Aussies seem to follow the US into every dumb war they create so it's easy to assume coercion is involved, as there's no other explanation that makes sense.
Ever since WW2 every Australian government has been happy to play vassal state to the US. There's an ideology behind it - an ideology which our political class has had since federation. The excuse usually given is "America protects our shipping lanes". The last time Australia even thought about going its own way the CIA soft-couped our government.
The thing is when you buy American you buy the procurement but you also buy a geopolitical umbrella. From a certain point of view I can get why it would make sense for Australia. However it also means a sort of geopolitical infeodation to US goals no matter what they are, some sort of modern commonwealth. If they had bought Rafale they would have had a great piece of equipment, tech transfers, ITAR free and no submission to French geopolitics.
It's very simple: - Cheap to buy - Cheap to run - Cheap to fix/maintain - Top performance (especially for its price) - 100% freedom of usage (US jets cannot operate at 100% capacity as it's always limited by what the US government allows it to do, such as access key codes)
Croatia is retiring all their MIGs who were Soviet era stuff, and now getting 12 rafales, having them as the only combat planes. Sadly, the new fleet of just 12 planes will be 5x more capable and effective than the rest of the fleet we had prio them, which says a lot about our air forces.
The most important reason is French aircraft’s don’t come with any use case conditions the buyer can use them as they please whereas the US aircraft’s come with many conditions as when and where they can and cannot be used. Secondary reasons are Cost of operation , History of US not supporting the buyers in maintenance and spares if the buyer is not doing everything according to US policy, Unhappy F-35 customers…..
@@groovy_bear passiv stealth is a myth in front of any latest radar tech (like rafale has in it). Activ stealth (electronic warfare) is also not inferior on rafale than f35.
More like the Eurofighter and the F-35...Most of Europe have the Eurofighter and with this current Putin's war, they are all adding the F-35 in their inventory.
The Rafale is outselling the F35 because: i. France can sell it even to non-allies. ii. Less restrictions regarding access to technology iii. Less restrictions as to use iv. Not cheap but cheaper to own than the F35 v. Rafale is not 5th gen, but a very capable 4.5 gen fighter aircraft which can give any country's airforce a credible air defense posture
For the EU it is important that the Rafale chalks up extra sales. While we are in NATO, the USA has proven to not always be a reliable partner, strongarming us into ventures we didn't really ask for. As such, the current reality is strategically not a bad one. We have F-35s being delivered, keeping us on the right side of the USA (phasing out the F-16s, some of which can move to the Ukraine ... something the USA is not very eager to do). We have the Eurofighter, which is a joint venture between the EU countries with aerospace experience, improving much needed EU cooperation. And we have the Rafale, which is a France only product, the sales of which creates some extra allies which the USA would not consider in the same way. Also, since Sweden joined NATO, there's the Gripen. As long as the EU is not a 'United States of Europe', this kind of position with different platforms seems to be the best. Not the cheapest, for reasons of scale. But the most adaptable to changing political realities. So go, la France! Vous êtes notre village Gaulois qui résiste à l’envahisseur.
Rafale is cheaper though in some ways less capable. It can help augment the flying hours and serve as a bomb truck in less hostile airspace. Plus all the benefits above. That said countries will always play politics around weapon sales. France has done it in the past with israel, which prompted an elaborate scheme to "steal" the ships they already paid for. It's just risk mitigation.
I quite like the Rafale. I actually think it was a mistake for the German government to order F-35s. Not only because we could have gotten more, as a European nation we should have a preference for European defense products

Some in Switzerland make the same argument. If war planes were to be used, it is more likely that it would be together with the French than against. And with the growing likelihood that the next US president will turn his back on NATO, selecting a plane that you can't use without their approval is a strange decision. The answer to the puzzle is : the US have been threatening European countries to buy F-35.
And more importantly, the Rafale can fly with all weather while the F-35 Switzerland bought will be unable to fly during storms. So basically if someone attack during a storm Switzerland will be unable to do anything air-wise... @

RIMPAC showed how good the F35 is. Though, it's expensive. Too much. And also, having only one aircraft creates the same problems the Japanese had with overproducing only the zero. It was amazing but when it's problems were found out it declined
You missed one critical thing about Rafael sale in Indonesia. USA largely facilitated that deal because US supplied F-15s to replace the lost bid for heavy Russian fighters due to possible sanctions. And USA promoted Rafale for France in Indonesia as a way to make up for the lost submarine deal with Australia and AUKUS. So it was a geopolitical move more than a military strategic decision. Also explains other purchases. Wanting to decouple a bit from America and disagreements over policy.
@@sigma_frenchie4075 The US doesn't particularly care whose side Indonesia is on, as long as it's not Russia or China's. France and Japan throwing their weight around a little will be overlooked or encouraged.

Just my opinion as Indonesian and the reason why we choose Rafale: 1. We are not US allied like Singapore, of course they won't give us F-35 2. We've got embargo from US back on '99 that affect our 33 F-16 armaments and spare parts. Of course this can be a dealbreaker in the future. 3. We need new submarine too. So, the deal is not just Rafale but also Scorpène class submarine too. And just 1 day after we signed the contract with Rafale, US agreed to sell F-15EX to us, yes F-15EX. Like what?
They did same with India...... When India Bought S40O from Russia, US offered India THAAD & Patriot but it was 2x the cost of S400 but still it was THAAD + Patriot is worse than S400
F15ex is a better plane than the F35 which is a plane for Hollywood movies... Rafale is better than both of them... When you buy american jets like F35 you don't buy a jet, you buy the American protection and supply...
The US still think ithasa monopoly. Here isthe thing though, France hasalways been a great power and very much aspire to remain one. France is the one Westeen country that always does things on its own. France did not sign nuclear agreements and developped their nukes alone, to keep control. France makes point to buy its own weapons and maintain one of the higest military budget in Europe. France also is just behind the US in global interventions, they simply are much more discrete about it. When the US left much of the Middle East not long ago, China though it would have free reign and be the new power to hold sway there, well China forgot France and France is the new police in the Middle East, not China. In short, France is making a shot at getting back on top. It has been a secondary power since the 1970's and that is longer than ever before, they are not happy about it and they just got an opportunity to get their spot back on the world stage. French influence in Africa and the Middle East is rapidly growing and it also seeks to replace Germany as the big guy in the EU. France keeps pushing for an European army, so that the EU stops relying in the US and more on them, as the next strongest military power and weapon manufacturer in the West.
Recent Pith Black war game exercises in Australia 6 x Singapore F-15SG went up against 2 RAAF F-35A and the F-15s were defeated 6-0 the pilots said they didn't see it on radar. Its due to this encounter that Singapore has requested more F-35B or maybe F-35A.
I feel like this started after India chose Rafale over other fighter jets, it's more than just reliable and you won't be under USA's shadow for spare parts.
@@Joshua_N-A Yes the countries cannot use it however they want cuz it affects the reputation of the aircraft. Recently when India's Mig-21 destroyed the Pakistan's F-16 USA ordered Pakistan to immediately diminish all the evidences of it.
The others reason are the maintenance's costs, and the operability. Who'll pays billion dollars for a plane designed as a stealth bomber, more often in garage than flying, except countries under U.S political's pression ? Those who need a good airplane, buy rafale, those who need U.S's umbrella, buy american's planes.
@@Zackary1005 and the US was not able to push it out if the way because the reason to pick the Rafale was to stay away from us planes and not trust worthy Trump
Rafale should be considered a 5th gen aircraft. It meets all requirements of 5gen except for the passive « stealth » aspect (stealth from its shape). However, many people assume stealth aircraft are literally invisible. This is not true. They are invisible in a specific radar frequency band (typically high frequencies), AND only for radar systems whose emitter and receptor are in the same location. Reason why all aircraft, even 5th gen, include some « active » stealth capabilities. Rafale has never bet on « passive » shape stealth, and as a result has a very good « active » stealth capability. What is « active » stealth? The aircraft detects the radar emissions, and jam them. The result is that the radar can either assume an erroneous echo and disregard it, or in most cases detect many confused echos in a different location than the real position of the aircraft. The enemy knows something is coming, but doesn’t really know from where, or how many aircraft are coming (could be 1, could be 10). Finally, radar capabilities do improve over time, and some believe this will one day make « passive » stealth aircraft more or less obsolete. On top of that, Rafale is quite manœuvrable and has very good nap-of-the-earth capabilities, making it more stealthy just from flying low enough.
Also, Rafale did « shot down » a F22 during an exercise. I don’t know if it’s the only one, but it’s nonetheless remarkable. Granted the pilot of the F22 did 2 mistakes
@@jacquesdahlet7207 Well exercises aren't really a good metric since they'll experiment and level the playing field in various ways. The goal of an exercise is not to win, it's for the various teams to gain experience and to actually learn something. Like what specific scenario you should be careful about.
@@TheStephaneAdam I agree for most of the case. But for ATLC 2009 this wasn't the case. During this exercise, Rafale was the star of the show and US couldn't let that happen. Remember this was the hard "anything but Dassault" time (still is btw but less brutal... most of the time) so they send F-22 for a "friendly match, nothing serious, just fun". And so it happened. US said they won by a nice margin but french bird managed a draw mainly because the F-22 had external fuel tanks. French team who was silent at the moment had enough and leaked some pictures of the F-22 during the fight, showing there was NO external tank. Then US kept bragging and lying, so this time a video leaked, showing how "well" a F-22 managed to fight against a Rafale and what you can see is a goose doing its best but failing to evade the bird of prey in its 6 with one lock with missile and one lock with gun. This wasn't a fair and friendly exercise, this was an attempt of public relation damage control who as usual with US derailed in a pathetic show of hypocrites lying so badly that 5yo kids would be ashamed.
Without even watching I’m going to guess that: 1: the Rafale is a lot cheaper 2: even by 2021 not all of the systems integration problems with the F-35 were fixed 3: most of the people who were going to buy F-35s already had made their orders
@@batzing Plus 88. Gripen cost is around the same, but is not projected to decrease in maintenance costs anytime soon. F35 is designed to be used in conjuction with other USA systems. Used as a single independent unit without being part of USA’s extensive satellite systems and other weapon systems F35 is not a very succesful aircraft. Plus it is more expensive than F16 or Rafale. For all countries which intend to use as independent unit without connection to USA systems F35 is not very logical.
The Rafale is a great plane, well supported by Dassault and the French government and able to accommodate a lot of upgrades. I would still pick the F16 for the same reasons
I see the F-16 as the "American Mig", easy to roll out, not that expensive and has room for a lot of upgrades. The F-35s are cool and all but If a huge war breaks out, its probably the f-16s that will get pumped out like crazy.
Buying F35 is like buying a sport car that comes with agreement of who you can or can not be friend or date with, who you can work with or work for, which roads you can or can not go, and so on and on. And at the end of the day, when you need to replace it, who you can or can not sell it to.
Cons of euro fighter- many nations are involved, hence buyer bust be in good term with all, and one unfriendly nation can block parts or component. Cons of American fighters- you are always in mercy of American administration, they can block sales of parts when ever they feel that Saif country isn't their friend... ie Iran ( tomcat ) Cons of Russian fighters- although no strings attached, Russian have questionable reliably and quality issue. Also parts are hard to buy. Swedish fighter - American engine ( can be blocked by American) French aircraft- since France source most of components themselves, they don't have to rely on American or other European, also they have reliable quality. Their previous fighter mirage have excellent service history. And they have independent foreign policy ( not guided by Americans) So many countries prefer French arms.
One certain plane kinda walked around this loophole a few years back: Su-30 MKM. The malaysian airforce sukhoi. A Russian bird with french avionics n sensors. So now its weapons loadout can be both russian and NATO. Ballsy move by the malaysians. Too bad most of the fleet has been grounded, though. They need new engines. The deal was already in place i think, but the current ukraine-russia conflict kinda threw a wrench into that plan. Indefinite pending. Ah well.. engine swap i guess😂 Edit: apparently the malaysian airforce (and in guessing the malaysian military in general, coz we do operate alot of russian equipment, as well as NATO equipment) was prepared for this sort of nonsense beforehand. Theyve localized alot of the parts and subconned other parts to foreign contractors outside russia. OEM, u might say. So they can sanction russia to the 7th depth of hell and the malaysian sukhois would still fly around no problem.
Country: I want an aircraft France: Alright, how much? A 3rd Gen? Yeah.. you can't have 5th Gen you gotta have a 4th Gen or 4.5 Gen first.
Political risk is lower with Rafale. French military is single-country and not subject to US bullying. France did what it had to do over the decades to maintain full control over their military supply chain. They're also "agreement capable" as a national partner. France also still has significant political clout worldwide and within NATO. Rafales were operating over Libya without SEAD support, meaning that its LO capabilities are considerable.
The Rafale is currently the best and most versatile combat aircraft in existence and it can go on any type of aircraft carrier, CATOBAR or Ski Jump. It can do all existing missions and it has twin engines. It has data fusion and an IRST. Not to mention it has an AESA active antenna radar and the best air-to-air missile in the world, the meteor with the largest no escape zone currently in existence. It has an extremely low radar cross section and a very low altitude flight capability unique in the world. It's quite a competitive beast. Frankly apart from the F 22 I don't see what plane can compete with it honestly.
The only thing it has an edge on the Eurofighter is carrier capability. Which was why France decided to leave the team and built the rafale. The rest is very similar to the EF with in most categories the EF being a tiny edge better. Range, thrust, climb rate, ... Both carry pretty much the same weapons. The Rafale has slightly less radar cross section, but cannot compete with the insanely powerful electronic warfare suite of the EF, that not many people talk about. That is a class of its own.
@@jackmclane1826 I absolutely do not agree. We should not compare the AF and the Rafale because they have no relationship, one is designed to be an air-to-air fighter and the other is a multi-purpose one that does all the missions, that is the enormous fundamental difference. The Rafale is a multi-purpose aircraft, capable of carrying out air-to-air, air-sea and air-to-ground missions, while the Eurofighter Typhoon focuses mainly on air-to-air missions. The Rafale also has nuclear capabilities, allowing it to carry nuclear weapons. Even if the AF has had improvements for air to ground, it is especially efficient in air to air combat and sky policing. This huge difference means that the Rafale can do more things and this is extremely important for the capabilities of the plane. On the characteristics they have a lot of differences, 3 very important points which make the difference on the missions in use that can be carried out: _the Af uses a radar and mechanical antenna and still does not have a radar with an active antenna except for export, and this happened very recently while the Rafale has had it for years and has improved its version. _The Af has no stealth element; it was designed for interception, with no constraints on discretion, unlike the Rafale which benefits from several elements of passive discretion, a low radar equivalent surface and, above all, active and tactical stealth. _Finally the AF does not have the capacity for automatic terrain following at very low altitude to be able to do the Dead and the Sead, it is only the Mirage 2000 and the Rafale which have this unique capacity in the world. This ability is very important, either you use this one or full stealth to be able to enter enemy territory first. The AF has neither, so this is yet another mission that the Af cannot fulfill. Here I focused only on the missions and you can see that the AF is efficient in air air but for the rest there is no point in comparing it. So no, the only difference is not landing on aircraft carriers as you said, the differences are fundamental in the missions carried out. If you want to compare the Rafale do it with the F35 but not with an air-to-air fighter, it will make more sense. Ps: the equipment is different too, in addition to having a greater number of hardpoints and a greater range (3700 km for Rafale and 2900km for the Af), the Rafale carries infrared MICA missiles which have exactly the same range as electromagnetic air-air missiles which is unique in the world. The Mica is available in two versions depending on the installed seeker, electromagnetic (EM) for all-weather interception or infrared (IR). I remind you that the Rafale can reach 6 on him with bombs as well.
@@sonikUk Look at the stats, the design philosophy and anything else. You can clearly see that both planes are siblings, if you are not blind. The same french team of designers who started working on the Eurofighter continued working on the Rafale after France decided to do their own thing. And they created a very capable plane, for sure. But what you list up are just details that both teams have decided differently for the roles intended by the makers. Like what radar to put in. The EF team cheaped out there. You are right that the Rafale is ready equipped to do a higher variety workload. But that is not a fundamental reason what one can and the other could not do. Not in such closely related designs. The terrain follower attack plane for UK and Germany is still the Tornado. It uses a tracking radar. By standard the EF does not. It could though, if someone orders it. The Rafale is also not a stealth craft. The RCS is just a tiny bit smaller than that of the EF. Detection range with typical X/Kx band radars is the identical within 100m. Range is also pretty identical. The EF has a slightly higher ferry range with almost identical fuel capacity in ferry config. For combat range the Rafale is listed a bit higher but in different missions. There is no reason why it should be higher in a comparable profile. Both systems decided on using a different short range missile system. That is it. Adapting the Mica to the EF or the Iris to the Rafale would LITERALLY just take minutes per plane. So, in the end I have to repeat myself: The only fundamental role that the EF is not capable to fulfill any time soon if needed, is carrier operation. And landing would be quite easy to retrofit. It is the take off that is painful.

Rafale is a gem. It is beautiful and powerful. It compares very favorably to the F35 on an operational and combat POV. It is no match for F18, F15, F16 (of course), Eurofighter, Grippen.... Compared to the Russian aviation, well considering what is happening in Ukraine, we can safely assume russian combat claims are unreliable. Of course it is today the very best fighter plane in the (realistic) world.
The Rafale is one of the best 4.5 Jets in the world. The really sovereign states will choose freely. So, unless they have a very advanced threat in volume or technology, they will buy the Rafale. The F-35 is a pig in flight compared to the Rafale, it has a very high performing but sensitive engine and is a maintenance queen, a very expensive, too. There is no doubt, though, about its stealth and avionics capabilities.
Unlike the F35 the Rafale is a well established platform so you get reliability along with a good plane. The F35 is still dealing with significant technical, manufacturing and maintenance issues.
No it isn't. Those issues have been dealt with for a while now. If they weren't then the F-35 wouldn't be selling and being used in such large numbers to so many other nations. You are thinking about the original models that have gotten updated already.
@@esphilee your point being what exactly? That has nothing to do with what I am talking about. Maintenace is high because the technology and systems used are high-end. The fact that you are only repeating lies and misinformation shows you don't actually pay attention to what is going on and take all your information from sensationalized reports from years ago and never bothered to look further. As for the F-15EX those are being bought to fulfill different missions specifically it is meant as a second wave fighter to launch missiles from far away once the F-35 has cleared anti-air and painted the targets for the EX. But you can keep the delusion that the F-35 doesn't beat and surpass all other 4th generation planes up if you want to. Even when nearly every combat pilot that has used the 35 and any other 4th gen aircraft has said that they prefer to fly the 35.
France is similar to Russia in terms of arms sales to third world countries, my country Indonesia does not have to go through a complicated bureaucracy to buy Rafale. If you buy a US fighter plane, you have to wait for congress approval, and that takes a long time. If your country has a bad record on human rights, congress will cancel the sale of the fighter jet. In fact the US has inflicted many casualties during its military operations, and that is also a form of human rights violations. And it's strange that they don't sell weapons to a country that has a poor record on humanity, while during the US operations in the Middle East they caused the deaths of many innocent civilians.
They were afraid to sell f-35 to india because we have russian s400 and many experts think that s400 will steal the emissions/signature data and send to russia. Well but they still wants to sell it to india somehow. That was one of the reasons that they also sanctioned turkey it was nato ally and had f-35 but they purchased s400.
A bad record on human rights means not USA friendly. Indonesian doesn’t want to pick side in the China USA Cold War 2.0, so USA won’t sell F-35. When Indonesian government decides to side with USA and be its pawn, you will see those bad human rights records suddenly won’t be an issue anymore. But given the size of Indonesian air space, F-35 is a shitty deal, it’s shorter range and high maintenance cost meant less airframes and even lesser area coverage. F-15Ex is a better option than F-35.
We didn't seem to care about human rights records of nations like Saudi Arabia and the UAE when selling them the planes. Congress isn't interested in human rights when it comes to the sale of the plane. If for one reason or another they don't want you to have the plane, they will use human rights as the excuse. That is how it works. There is no way Indonesia has a human rights record even close to as bad as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates or Israel. Congress simply feels it isn't in their strategic interests for you to have that plane.
Why only mention the cost per flight hour at the end, kind of like a sidenote? It is an essential part of the cost of a fighter. For 4k hour airframes that's $120M for the F-35 and around $70M for the Rafale. Not to mention the cost of maintaining a full stealth fighter, and the repair costs. Look at the F-22 that went off its runway in early 2000's. Took $30M and 7 years for it to fly again.
F35 is more expensive compare to rafale. Plus not all countries are allowed to buy this fighter jet. Basically only american allied could buy f35. So the option left is to make a deal with russian stealth jet, but unfortunately there will be CAATSA for every single deal with russian made weapon. Therefore Rafale come to the best option, well upgraded and still will be a main fighter jet for french air force untill 2040 and that is a guarantee for any spare parts suppplies.
Exactly. US cannot sell to a lot of countries because of human rights etc. Besides, they cannot sell to countries like UAE and Saudi Arabia because the Qualitative Military Edge of Israel in Middle East is enshrined in US law so even if US wanted to sell F-35s to UAE or Saudi Arabia like the previous US administration wanted, they cannot as their hands is tied due to the QME law. Turkey was kicked out of the F-35 program after Turkey bought the S-400 air defence systems from Russia. India was also ruled out becoz India bought advanced Russian air defence systems. Besides, the F-35s are really expensive. Most expensive fighter jets in the world and not all countries necessarily want or need such expensive military jets for their defence needs. Also, it is not true that you have to a US ally to buy F-35s. Singapore is not a treaty US ally but it was still authorized to buy F-35s.
F35 also comes with LOT of issues still not fixed dangerous for the pilots it's a plane for Hollywood that's why many country fall in the trap and also, when they buy it they also buy the US protection and it's maybe more important than the jet itself
Rafale is like a Landcruiser and the f35 is like a Range Rover, both are great and awesome in their capabilities but you take the Range Rover to car shows....and you take the land cruiser to overland in Africa...
1. Not every airforce needs stealth fighters . 2. Cost . 3. easy maintenance & repair. 4. Weapons and missiles. 5. Compared to the USA, as far as I know, the French sell you the weapons with no strings attached. No sanctions BS and sanctimonious crap.
Teh rafale sold to foreign countries do not have the same improvement than those in the French air force. The fact that Rafale is out selling F35 is mostly due to a) the cost of the planes, rafle being quite less expensive, with a very good price quality / ratio ; b) the combat availability. For the time being F35 spend more time in the shed under repair than any other planes. Rafale is just flying while F35 is not...

So why specifically request procurement permission for an entire program, just to get their hands one engine? You are making up bullshit on the spot to support your own bias conclusions. You are not the voice of what India wants, so you can stop pretending that you are. -And the PAKFA was not designated Su50. Try T-50 as that is what the Russians often designate their prototypes. It doesn't matter why India dropped out of the program. The point is, they dropped out! PERIOD! -and then they opted for the F-35 after they opted out. Not before! Not during! After!
regarding Croatian decision to buy Rafale is failed contract to buy ex-Israeli F-16 Barak, that deal was blocked by the USA, as the US did not allow them to be sold with Israeli upgrades... so Croatia had to call for the new tender. In that tender Israeli F-16 had to be stripped from all Israeli upgrades and if Croatia decided again to go for Barak, they should be upgraded in Lockheed Martin, so that was not an option as it would cost more than it was offered from Israel in the first place. Sweden offer, Grippen, which is in a bit outdated C/D variants, without AESA radar, and that planes were to expensive if we compare what they are offering, and by capabilities, they can not compare with others. USA offered the newly built F-16 block 70/72 that was way out of the price range Croatia was willing to pay. These aircrafts would cost at least double than Rafale If the USA was able to offer some used F-16 block 50/52 it would cost maybe 800mil USD Croatia would buy it for sure. Rafale was the best offer in that Tender as we are getting in a reasonable price (1 billion €) aircraft that could be exploited for next 30 years, capabilities are comparable to F-16 block 70/72 that was offered for a double price, and in the NATO only F-35 could be considered as the more advanced aircraft. Basically, Rafale is on the first look an overkill for small Croatia, especially because it is twin-engine aircraft, and more expensive for exploitation, but we ordered only 12 planes and it would work perfectly if we gonna use all RAfales potential, such as AAM Meteor AASM Hammer and exocet missles. The decision to buy Rafale was also political because the Croatian prime minister is very pro-European politician and is not among those who also try to build strong relationships with the USA at the same time, he was also serving as a diplomat in France for years before he become prime minister, and is all about European integration, so he is trying to be close to Macron and Ursula von der Leyen with a distance from the USA, that was also part of the decision
One thing the Rafale has now that it didn't back at the start, absolutely no parts of US origins, which mean they can don't need any approval from the USA to sell their planes, to countries that maybe can't buy US weapons because of geopolitcal reasons.
makes me remember the reason Egypt and middle eastern countries can't get too advanced of weaponry that could threaten israel yes, most of the political reasons for the us to not give any advanced weapons to middle east and impose sanctions who advanced weaponry from russia, is the simple fact of protecting israel in case of a war
That's why those countries buy french, russian, or now chinese. You can see on the other end rafale potential buyers that are in NATO or under US protectorate all have forsaken it in favor of US aircrafts@@mmneaapro596
One more point, india bought the 35 rafael after rigorous testing and negotiation with many india specific enhancements, world was watching it very closely as military purchases in india is pretty complex process and deal is only given after very rigorous testing assurances and long term operational capabilities. Once india started receiving her Rafael’s other country knew this has to be the best overall purchase. They went ahead for ourchase after that.
Every nation that has access to the F-35 is choosing the F-35. It's similar costs (and cheaper in a lot of cases) with all the benefits of a 5th gen stealth fighter. Those nations that can't get the F-35 like Egypt and Qatar, will choose the best 4.5 gen on the market which is currently the Rafale. A point can be made for a non-stealth airframe that is cheaper to fly for missions that don't require stealth, but most nations that need a high-end fighter choose the F-35 if they can. Heck, even the title is trying to pick and choose with saying it's outselling the F-35 from 2021 on.
The Rafale is outselling the F-35 because it's superior in everything except in Radar LO (X-BAND) detection. It would crush it even more if there wasn't corrupt politicians involved in Europe to buy F-35 instead of an European made plane that is better, except obviously for NATO countries that wish the USA give them shared nukes program that is really the only reason to buy the F-35.
Well, Rafale isn't the BEST 4.5th out there (that would be Typhoon) but it is supported by a very aggressive export policy of France, and jet competions are supported more by them. Also remember that one of the Typhoons primary members, Germany, is actively opposed to exporting it.

I would somewhat disagree. The F-35 looks like a good multi-role bomber but a terrible air superiority fighter. The F-35 not fast enough, not a good dogfighter and does poorly against missiles that have a lock compared to the twin engine 4.5 gen fighters like the F-15, Eurofighter, Rafale, Su-35, ... As a result, companies in Canada have secured $587 million USD in contracts. If the Government of Canada decides to acquire the F-35 through the F-35 JSF partnership, companies in Canada are well positioned to sustain currently contracted work and would continue to be able to compete for additional production, sustainment and follow-on development work over the next several decades."
To sum up, the Rafale is sold where there is a real war or where it is most likely to take place. I think that the Indians who have a border with China and are rivals of China have thought more about the technical purchase of their aircraft than the Swiss for example or other European countries who do not make war because they buy the American support, because if they do not buy F-35 goodbye to NATO and the American nuclear defense The Swiss who buy F-35 is hilarious, a stealth aircraft? against who lol? France or Italy or Germany? The Rafale to defend their airspace was better or at least sufficient to intercept a boeing or an airbus that doesn't respect its route. The F-35 is sold in great part because it is the USA behind not for the plane but for the nato or the American support in case of major conflict. This is a strategic choice but what would be the real sales of the F-35 if it was not the USA behind it?
Very interesting perspective, it makes sense indeed. The German, a EU member not choosing a plane from EU seems to support what you say : they do not care about EU but only their strategic interest and US protection. It was quite disappointing to me.

Talking about the Brazilian deal where the F-16 and later F-18 Super Hornet, and also the Rafael lost the bid to the Gripen. The F-16 was essentially discarded right away because Brazilian Airforce wouldn't be allowed even to make the plane's maintenance. The USA offered a slightly better deal on the F-18 Super Hornet, but nothing compared to France and Sweden. France offered the Rafael with technology transfer for Embraer to manufacture, upgrade and do some modifications to the Rafaele, specially incorporating existing systems that were not readily integrated to the Rafael at the time, and it almost won, it even got to the point of being pointed as th winnerof the bid, to sweaten some commercial agreements with the EU, that France was blocking. Despite that, the project Gripen NG was chosen, at the time the new generation Gripen was still on the drawing board, there wasn't even a fully functional prototype, just a couple modified Gripen Cs with some of the proposed modifications. The Sweadish Parliament refused to solo fundthe project, but gave a go if Saab could find a suitable international partner. So they offered the Brazilian Defense Ministry not only the local manufacturing and technology transfer offered by France, but total partnership on development, with the Gripen F, being designed from the ground up to meet the specific requirements of the Brazilian Airforce. The Gripen E/F development t and production involves not only Embraer, but nearly the entire Brazilian Defense Industry, which not only learned with the Gripen, but is already branching and ocuppying new places globally, supplying structural and systems engineeting services and as well as a diverse range components to the Turkish Stealth Drones and to their project of a Stealth fighter too. Besides Sweaden and Turkey, the Brazilian companies that started off by working on the Gripen E/F project are also involved in projects with the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Italy, Frace, the UK, South Africa, India, etc. So, despite being sligjtly less capable than the current version of the Rafael -- a difference that wasn't entirely true 15-10 years ago -- and despite costing more than what would cost to buy a batch of barebone F-35s, the Brazilian choice for Gripen more than paid it off. Not only it worked as a modernization program for th Brazilian Airforce, but also as trampoline board for the Brazilian air defense industry to achieve greater heights, and through that brought many deals to the country. The First batch of 36 Gripen E/F was extended from 36 to 40 airframes and another batch of 36 is to follow, and quite probably a third batch too, as it should replace the already 32 Retired Mirage 2000s, the 72 F-5M fighters, and about 20+ AMX A-1, strike plane. Also, with the rising tension in Latin America, with Venezuelan Dictator, Nicolás Maduro threatening to invade and anex most of Guiana -- including threatening to do so using a shortcut through Brazilian Airspace, and with BAF already mobilizing to twart any such attempts by Venezuela to cross/use Brazilian Airspace to attack Guiana -- it is certain that the defense expenses will rise a lot not only in Brazil, but in the entire region.

Because the Rafale spend more time in the sky than in maintenance
Maintenance Man Hours Per Flight Hour Rate for the F-35A is 4.79, for the U.S. Marine Corps’ F-35B it is 7.48, and for the U.S. Navy F-35C it is 7.55. This means that the F-35C sits more than 1 full day on the ground being maintained per flight hour.
There is two main point lacking in this video, likely because its USA centered view :
First.
Most f35 deals basically equate to a lease agreement rather than actual sales.
not only is the Rafale much better than its competitors but France does not engage in economic blackmail, it is a reliable partner!

As a rank amateur/outsider, I simply don't believe this based on how many F-35s have been sold - political ass-kissing can't fully explain it.
Australia, Norway, Belgium and The Nethetlsnds have also purchased the F35.
No... The US greenlighted the potential sale 36 F-15EX but Indonesia hasn't ordered any US plane.

One important point is also that when rafale was in competition with US aircraft, even if rafale was "first" in term of efficiency, the "political" aspect make the rafale lose the game,ie: in south Korea :Hereunder an article from 2013:
South Korea has acquired 60 F-15s from Boeing since 2002, against the Rafale, which was declared the winner after technical and operational evaluations.

Rafale and F35 seem to have complementary capabilities for an air force. A few F35s for stealth, many Rafales for everything else.
@Xigap Yes but not on the stealth side though.

The Rafale is outselling the F35 because:
i. France can sell it even to non-allies.
ii. Less restrictions regarding access to technology
iii. Less restrictions as to use
iv. Not cheap but cheaper to own than the F35
The French make hard allies🤣

@@TheStephaneAdam I agree for most of the case. But for ATLC 2009 this wasn't the case. During this exercise, Rafale was the star of the show and US couldn't let that happen. US said they won by a nice margin but french bird managed a draw mainly because the F-22 had external fuel tanks. French team who was silent at the moment had enough and leaked some pictures of the F-22 during the fight, showing there was NO external tank. I just want to point out something to some people here: The fighter is called "Rafale" (gust/storm in french) and it's made by the "Dassault" company. It's not "Rafael" wich is an Izraeli defense company
Love on all of you
Not many were interested in Rafale and the French didn't have the marketing clout like the US. The world knows that IAF does thorough evaluation for it's fleet and doesn't buy stuff under US pressure. When IAF chose Rafale it was a stamp of approval of quality product and made other countries look at Rafale and place orders.
For me the IAF like the US needed a high low mix the F35 is the high.
@@marknelson463 Except it was supposed to be the low in its inception and doctrine, the F-22 being the high. Just shows how fucked up this program has been since a couple generals and politicians decided to divert tax payers' money for themselves and their friends on this never-ending program.

@@marknelson463 Israel is the perfect client for the F-35,I hate this plane and its program, but I recognize the special need for a stealthy aircraft and its advantages.
What bothers me is the emphasis on it as the ultimate gimmick, as well as the jet being a pretty poor flying aircraft compared to the F-16 and F-18, as it has been tasked with so many missions, it's average at each of them.

I'm very glad of this cooperation between our countries :)
its inferior to the f35 in every way
Why is the Rafale selling well? Well it flies, it’s already good compared to the F35
Have to correct one thing, the Rafale is not on a roll. It's on a croissant...I'll get my coat.

You are so full of it that it’s not even funny.
The Rafale is a great plane, well supported by Dassault and the French government and able to accommodate a lot of upgrades. I would still pick the F16 for the same reasons
I see the F-16 as the "American Mig", easy to roll out, not that expensive and has room for a lot of upgrades. The F-35s are cool and all but If a huge war breaks out, its probably the f-16s that will get pumped out like crazy.
a rare reasonable comment !
No I wouldn't I prefer 2 engines and that Exocet missile. Plus the Rafale is newer and has much better numbers. Take care. God bless
F16v great fighter but below block 72 meh.
Yep. If you want western fighter for low cost, go Rafale or Viper
Buying F35 is like buying a sport car that comes with agreement of who you can or can not be friend or date with, who you can work with or work for, which roads you can or can not go, and so on and on. And at the end of the day, when you need to replace it, who you can or can not sell it to.
F35 are useful in cases where you are up against S400, thats why Greece is buing them, and US gives licence to use.
Cons of euro fighter- many nations are involved, hence buyer bust be in good term with all, and one unfriendly nation can block parts or component.
Cons of American fighters- you are always in mercy of American administration, they can block sales of parts when ever they feel that Saif country isn't their friend... ie Iran ( tomcat )
Cons of Russian fighters- although no strings attached, Russian have questionable reliably and quality issue. Also parts are hard to buy.
Swedish fighter - American engine ( can be blocked by American)
French aircraft- since France source most of components themselves, they don't have to rely on American or other European, also they have reliable quality. Their previous fighter mirage have excellent service history. And they have independent foreign policy ( not guided by Americans)
So many countries prefer French arms.
about Swedish Fighter. on point.
One certain plane kinda walked around this loophole a few years back:
Su-30 MKM.
Ah well.. engine swap i guess😂
Edit: apparently the malaysian airforce (and in guessing the malaysian military in general, coz we do operate alot of russian equipment, as well as NATO equipment) was prepared for this sort of nonsense beforehand. Theyve localized alot of the parts and subconned other parts to foreign contractors outside russia. OEM, u might say. So they can sanction russia to the 7th depth of hell and the malaysian sukhois would still fly around no problem.
the string attached to buying russian aricraft is the US not liking it.
Country: I want an aircraft
France: Alright, how much?
US: Hmmmm.....I first gonna need to do some background check and of course there are the terms and conditions such as you cannot use it for war etc. Oh yes I almost forgot what was your last aircraft? A 3rd Gen? Yeah.. you can't have 5th Gen you gotta have a 4th Gen or 4.5 Gen first.

EF-2000 performs better at high altitude and high speed... something nobody cares today because HAHS interceptors are a thing from the past. Meanwhile Rafale can do whatever you want, from air policing to deep penetration nuclear strike from a carrier, is a far better ELINT/SIGINT bird than the Typhoon will ever be... They don't even have an AESA except for exported planes while Rafale is up for a new one. A rafale with a single wing is a better A2G striker than an EF-2000 towed by a A400...

And the fact that F-35 is only good if you have US system makes it less desirable, it's apple of war equipment.
The F-35 and the Rafale are whole different things, they simply ain’t the same piece.
yeah arguably they would work great in conjunction as the F35 can't carry all lot of missiles but would be hard to beat in SEAD.
@@adventwolfbane , maintenance cost is higher for sure.
@@esphilee your point being what exactly? That has nothing to do with what I am talking about. Maintenace is high because the technology and systems used are high-end. The more advanced parts are the more they cost to maintain that is simple fact. And for that increased cost, you get an aircraft that outperforms every other 4th gen fighter overall and several of the competitors 5th gen fighters.
@@adventwolfbane F-35 has always a new problem when one is solved. That's just a scam, a failed program. Even the USAF prefers to buy new F-15 EX instead of the F-35 crap that is still unable to fly correctly and perform its initial missions. Funny...
@@ferdinanddestouches3085 your words show that you don't know what you are talking about. First there are no new problems all the original issues have been dealt with. Again it isn't a scam or else so many other nations and the USA would not be ordering so many and using them. The F-35 is flying and doing its missions already with no issues including combat missions.
Double standards
It's because they're an empire.

Short answer, its a good airplane in many circonstances, its cheaper than f35, and its not american.
It's not just good. As far as I know, it won every competition by a wide margin. F-35 never beat it outside simulations.
The Rafale is a crazy fighter ! probably the best aircraft ever !
Yes and in the end it is not Russia will be the loser but it is the US and the France is the winner!
Singapore is not a treaty US ally but it was still authorized to buy F-35s.

regarding Croatian decision to buy Rafale is failed contract to buy ex-Israeli F-16 Barak, that deal was blocked by the USA, as the US did not allow them to be sold with Israeli upgrades... so Croatia had to call for the new tender.
These aircrafts would cost at least double than Rafale
If the USA was able to offer some used F-16 block 50/52 it would cost maybe 800mil USD Croatia would buy it for sure.
The decision to buy Rafale was also political because the Croatian prime minister is very pro-European politician and is not among those who also try to build strong relationships with the USA at the same time, he was also serving as a diplomat in France for years before he become prime minister, and is all about European integration, so he is trying to be close to Macron and Ursula von der Leyen with a distance from the USA, that was also part of the decision

b) Because it carries some serious tech and weapons that the French don't mind selling

True.
On the opposite, the Eurofighter needs approval from the USA to be sold
makes me remember the reason Egypt and middle eastern countries can't get too advanced of weaponry
that could threaten israel
yes, most of the political reasons for the us to not give any advanced weapons to middle east and impose sanctions who advanced weaponry from russia, is the simple fact of protecting israel in case of a war
According to the previous evaluation made in the Netherlands and South Korea
the Rafale is Green checked compared to Red or Yellow for the F-35 in :
Infrared LO,

Supersonic Agility,

It would crush it even more if there wasn't corrupt politicians involved in Europe to buy F-35 instead of an European made plane that is better, except obviously for NATO countries that wish the USA give them shared nukes program that is really the only reason to buy the F-35.
Well, Rafale isn't the BEST 4.5th out there (that would be Typhoon) but it is supported by a very aggressive export policy of France, and jet competions are supported more by them. Also remember that one of the Typhoons primary members, Germany, is actively opposed to exporting it.
@@Retrosicotte The Eurofighter Typhoon is way inferior and by far to the Rafale th-cam.com/video/PQZZe1WbRQ8/w-d-xo.html the evaluation of both doesn't even show it close the Rafale Standard F3 of the 2000's
Not quite. stealth coating are known for costly to maintain.
Stealth doesn't really matter as much when you are fighting over your own airspace.
Keep in mind, lots of countries are buying the F-35 do this because they want the stealth bomber. Or because of american political pressure to make money of arms sales.
Really unlucky day to publish this after Canada said they'd be placing an order for 88 F-35s.
Poor timing
Canada is involved in the program.
@@bobfg3130 Canadian has approx 500 Million invested in industry complimenting F-35 Production
"Canada's participation in the F-35 JSF Program has given companies in Canada the opportunity to compete for design/development, production and sustainment contracts on the F-35 aircraft and associated systems.

Thought so.
A good analysis ❤️. I was really amused to see swiss buying F35 😂. Well about India you said right.
Very interesting perspective, it makes sense indeed.
The German, a EU member not choosing a plane from EU seems to support what you say : they do not care about EU but only their strategic interest and US protection. It was quite disappointing to me.
@@Eric_Malbos Welcome to the real world, where the US dominates european countries through NATO and the EU (because the EU is dominated by Germany, and Germany does what the US say)
Exactly, it's only bought by US allies under diplomatic pressure.
@@Eric_Malbos German officers literally resigned because the German government stated that they weren't going to buy the F-35. Which very quickly changed when Russia invaded Ukraine. Threat of war gravitates you to the best equipment.

I just wonder where did you get the information the rafale is less capable than F35, Grippen and Typhoon? The rafale won all tenders and is currently the best jets.

Man what are you talking about, the Rafale along with the Typhoon are air superiority/omnirole fighters, the Gripen is not even comparable, it's like comparing the F-15 to the F-20 Tigershark. From range, weapon payload, TASMO, reconesaince, kinematics. Plus the Rafale is the only 100% one country builds everything, down to last screw fighter aircraft, that is not Russian trash. This is why it's a non brainer to buy the Rafale

Indonesia : Tries to buy F-35s
USA : No, but here's our F-15EXs
France : Here, may we recommend the Rafale?
Indonesia : **We'll take em all**
In honesty, Indonesian air force is in a serious need of modernization. Their F-16C Block 15s are showing their age now, and if their neighbors are having an airforce that's almost 4x larger with individually more advanced planes, even if they're friendly, something is still very wrong. As a bonus Indonesia also badly needs ASM capabilities.
What neighbor are you referring to?
Indonesia is the one getting more and more assets growing in numbers
@@jovpal5685 I’m sure those Australian nuclear submarines don’t make Indonesia feel like it is in the lead.
Don’t take them all. Other countries want planes too.
F-15EX is better than the Rafale, Indonesia probably just couldn't afford them.
@Yoshitaka Indonesia has more man power though and Australia is too busy with their own fuck ups
I can see why countries don't want the F-35, here in the Netherlands we couldn't respond with our shiny new planes to an airspace thingy because the F-35's require codes from the US to activate and it took quite a while for the US to send these codes
What the actual fuck.
And if US wants can disable your planes too... Wow .. and still we want these planes???
The thing is most of those buyer can’t even buy F-35’s there options were F-16 which is waiting for a export upgrade the SU-30 which is under powered. So when you look at their 3 options it make more sense to buy the french plane. When the new F-16 and F-15 export model is in mass production it will retake the lead in yearly sales. The SU-30 will not see exporting over the next decade because the Russians can’t afford to allow parts not to be used to rebuild their air force.
