When I was a kid I disliked these DMUs but now I adore these venerable old ladies of the rails. A lovely video.

First Generation DMUs are the back bone of our preserved railways. It’s amazing to think some of these were in service as late as 2003!

A lovely sequence at 2:19 in the snow. Excellent video.
Many years ago I started at Penzance one morning and travelled on all the branch lines (five from memory, of which Looe and Gunnislake were the best although St Ives was short but interesting) and in between on the west coast main line I had a couple of connecting trips on these railcars. These may have been Class 108: I recall sitting up the front: they were fast!
From Melbourne (Oz), I have been on three preserved railways in the UK: NYMR, SVR and Dart Valley, plus one preserved steam tour, but it would have been helpful to show the sequences by time in the summary and where each one was. Easy to identify the GCR as it's double track but a couple of the others were hard if one hasn't been there or seen huge numbers of videos of them.
Amazing on the East Lancs Rly (definitely on my visiting list) that passengers don't slip on what appears to be ice not snow on the platform for the departure of a Rothley-bound railcar.

Lovely video. I used to travel on 101s on the Barking- Gospel Oak line. Love them all. Just goes to show Bachmann got it right with the dim lights. Look at them in the 104 at night

Heartbreaking seeing the 104 on the Llangollen, given their current awful plight. Surely we can't just lose such a valuable and beautiful preservation experience?

i know the GCR railway has a power twin, it might be worth them getting rid of that and getting a power trailer instead, as the gradients are not that bad on the GCR

My son is special needs and he loves trains 🚆🚂🚃🚄🚅🚇🚈🚉🚊🚝🚞🚋🛤 especially diesel railcars like those he thinks that here in North America 🌎🇺🇸🇨🇦 they are highly underrated rail transportation vehicles and all should be preserved, restored, and put back into service on lines that are not used anymore or at least don't get passenger service. He also thinks that Siemens, Progress Rail, or any other company that builds railroad equipment should build full size working replicas of first generation diesel railcars and the departments of transportation should rebuild railroad lines that were abandoned and removed and run these on them.

Wouldn't it make sense today for a rail builder to make an updated version of the Budd Co's RDC? Seems to me that service on lines that have limited passenger service , perhaps mostly commuter, these would be wonderful.

About the only good thing you can say about these "bugfarts" is despite their constant rocking and rolling suspension seating like marshmallow, they were more comfortable and reliable than the rail bus, pacers, etc that replaced them!

New Zealand had railcars a long time ago. Now we have buses that sometimes give you 13minute stops to rush to the toilet or be left behind. Then they are held up by roadworks. At least the suspension is nice.

The rail car towing a wagon at 5:40. Was that common?

Yes, DMU'S regularly had tail loads of tankers, 4 wheeled vans and bogie vans.
