The theory is that they never communicated with Mia's mum. One of the spirits merely took the form of her mother to get to her. Plus when Mia described the whole Talk To Me moment to Riley, she said she was more of a spectator, watching everything. That would explain the scene where she was sucking on Daniel's toes. That wasn't her. She was being possessed at the time.
My theory is that only the people that die possessed (like Mia) can communicate via the hand. Mia mom kill herself and have nothing to do with the hand so it was not her. It was the second ghost (the lady who drown) after reading Mia mind that took her mother apparence to manipulate her. You can see the fake mom ghost become more and more wet, just like the spirit who took over mia the second time.

As infuriating as a lot of these decisions were, they tract both for teenagers, lack of support, and addiction. I think that's what is part of why it is so frustrating but good to watch!

Even though I didn’t get to see it in theaters but I’m so happy I got the chance to see it! Loved. Every. Minute. Of. It. Love the message of drug addiction with the hand since they described it as giving you a good feeling while using the hand causing them to be addicted and us it over and over again. Brilliant! Also that every time her ‘mom’ showed up you could hear the sound of water hinting that it was the ghost that Mia let in earlier tricking her by pretending to be her mom. I do think that her actual mom did actually possess Riley only because how she was apologizing to Mia for taking her own life. I would rewatch the movie again again and again 😭👏 I know you went through a journey while high I could see throughout the reaction that it was kicking in😂😂

haaated this film. i understand & can appreciate the underlying tones/themes of depression & addiction along with grieving the loss of a loved one but it doesn't excuse some of the choices made throughout it bc this movie was truly so unbearable to watch. the good parts were all of the horror elements, the cinematography, the ending especially, but the characters were all written so poorly. there was so much that just felt thrown in solely for shock value. we had a large watch party & all went into the film wanting to love it due to the way people were hyping the film up but ended up hating the main character so much we rooted for her (& everyone's) demise at the end bc of how stupid everyone was being!!! so much of the film was so cliche & predictable it was beyond infuriating. the ONLY one who slayed was miss aunt zelda!! love you chu, you made this rewatch bearable hahah
