    In Tolkien, Dragons are ALL evil (Only Sauron's master, Morgoth, could command their loyalty and obedience) and are drawn to GOLD, the more gold, the stronger the attraction. Smaug lived in the far North and stories of the fabulous wealth of the Dwarves at Erebor (The Lonely Mountain) had reached him. So he came to see and take possession of the gold. (And all the other wealth.) After a while (say 5-10 years, a dragon knows the exact extent of his hoard and will miss even 1 single coin or jewel if he is robbed. (Which is why it is extremely dangerous to rob a dragon) Because, like dwarves, Dragons NEVER Forget and NEVER Forgive.
    Smaug destroyed the city of Dale to prevent the people from trying to attack him, once he took the mountain. In the second part you find out WHY King Thranduil of the Woodland Elves refused to aid the Dwarves - Partly because the King Thror had been asked to safeguard jewels (Which were very important to Thranduil as they were his wife's jewels - she was Legolas' mother), then refused to return them, and partly because Thranduil knew how difficult it would be to dislodge Smaug - in Ancient Times (The First Age of Middle Earth - this is the end of the 3rd Age, now, almost)_ Thranduil had fought (Quote) "The Great Serpents of the North" and bears the scars of Dragonfire. (A bit of a spoiler here, but it helps to understand WHY certain things happened.)

    • @brettpeacock9116
      @brettpeacock9116 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      BTW, Smaug is a lesser Dragon, despite his size. The First Dragon, nurtured by Morgoth in the North was called Glaurung and he was Flightless, breathed fire and almost 8x the size of Smaug. Another giant Dragon, who could fly was Ancalagon the Black, The greatest Dragon ever ( even Bigger than Glaurung!), and he plays a major role in the Silmarillion. His kin were about 4x Smaug's size. So, indeed "Great Serpents of the North"

    Just to remind you that Guilliermo Del Toro was the original Director of The Hobbit, but had to leave through issues of taking on too many projects, not realizing how big this movie would be and the consultation with Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh eventually had some creative differences. So the facts are most of Del Toro's work had to be shelved (One to two years of prep work) and The Hobbit movie was almost abandoned, but Peter Jackson stepped in. Unfortunately, he had to start from scratch with a lesser budget, no real time extension from the studios and almost one third of the time was taken up by Del Toro. So this is the main reason for some of the new innovations we see in movie making today, especially with regards to motion capture. The issue I have with The Hobbit is the excessive use of Green Screen, Digital imaging and minimal use of prosthetics. However, these movies would not have been possible without this, based on the timeframe and budget constraints, so I'm not complaining at all, no matter what I still love these movies.

      Does this explain the really incredible (and unforgivable) liberties taken with the book? What was Legolas doing with the Wood Elves? He wasn't even in The Hobbit at all. And Beorn did not stick a bear face out of his door and growl at Gandolf.

    • @AmarthwenNarmacil

      @@christinerobinson9372 I have an issue with a lot of the liberties they took, but Legolas being with the wood elves is not one of them. After all, Mirkwood is his home and he's the son of Thranduil, the wood elve king. It makes sense he would be there. There are way bigger issues with the trilogy, especially the second and third movie.

    • @wayneshilcock3027
      @wayneshilcock3027 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@AmarthwenNarmacil Just a reminder as my previous comment mentions. Jackson had much less time to complete the Hobbit and the third movie was based on just a few lines in the book I believe. Besides, the first was character building and the second has the most incredible dragon sequence in cinematic history.

      It always breaks my heart thinking of how the studios basically tortured Jackson with the hobbit and how beaten he was.. and that after he came out on top with the LotR trilogy, but he had no chance with the hobbit from the beginning and it got even worse behind the scenes, like you described
      Especially when, in the back of your mind, you have moments like Elijah Woods last day of filming for LotR and Jacksons emotional reaction (and everything that stands behind that or what this meant and still means) and in general, how tragically different the circumstances for Jackson were
      But no one will ever be able to take LotR from him ❤ and i am already excited for War of the Rohirrim

    Extended cut is better at explaining the dwarves/elves situation. There were gems that had value to elven people and the king of dwarves doesn't give it to the king of elves. So, when Thranduil came with his army, at the last second he changed his mind to not waste his men on such a collosal monster. He fought dragons too, so he knows their wrath and Smaug is the last of the big dragons that spews fire.

    I definitely know what's missing. I felt it too. I think it's that these films are made so much with CGI instead of the practicality of the sets and ORCS and action in LOTR that gave it a real feel. I blame this mainly on the fact that The Hobbit was written and meant as a childrens book, so these films end up looking slightly more on the cartoon side.
    Ash I also understand your point about the closeness of the characters and all, because there definitely isn't nearly as much chemistry between this cast as there was between the dang Fellowship of the Ring lmao.
    The second movie is far better than this one (and in my opinion, the best of the set), so I hope you get more enjoyment out of that.

    I'm on board for this shit. It's definitely not as good as LOTR but it's probably my 2nd favourite trilogy of movies. If you've played tabletop RPGs like D&D, "The Hobbit" trilogy is the perfect D&D trilogy if you look at it as a bunch of goofs playing a party of dwarves and a halfling going on an adventure to fight a dragon in a mountain.
    Ash is spot on when he calls out the bond between characters. There are so many dwarves they don't get time in the spotlight to grow or establish bonds with each other. Even in the beginning of LOTR you see the friendly relationship between Frodo and Gandalf, as well as Frodo and Sam. Having a small focused party is usually better for writing than a big one. The dwarves also appear pretty much at once, they don't get time to establish relationships with each other. Bilbo's relationship with them builds up over time.
    The actual book is much better, and pretty much every dwarf in Thorin's company has full story in the lore.

    • @tejshah6083
      @tejshah6083 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, in the book we know practically nothing about any of the dwarves either. Only Thorin gets anything even nearly approaching a backstory, even Fili and Kili aren't described in any detail. The book is still good, because it's main focus is Bilbo, and the Dwarves function merely as a development tool, and thus don't need description.

    •So when Sauron gave the Dwarf Lords the Seven Dwarven Rings of Power, it did not have the desired effect. Rather than turn the Dwarf Lords into something more like the Nazgul, the Rings increased their love of gold to the point that the Dwarves amassed massive treasure hoards, big enough to attract dragons.
    •In Tolkien's mythology, Dragons were created by Melkor, who also created the Trolls. There are sentient and creatures of evil. And Smaug is the last of the Fire-Drakes.
    •Erebor is the name of the kingdom; the king's jewel is called the Arkenstone.
    •This is something the Extended Edition goes into - what started the feud between the Dwarves and Elves.
    •"In a hole in the ground, there lived a Hobbit." - The first line of the book and Tolkien first wrote it down on the back of a student's term paper.
    •Martin Freeman's been around.
    •Gandalf is leaving a mark so that Thorin and Company will know which house to come to.
    •So of the 13 Dwarves of Thorin and Company, you have Thorin Oakenshield, son of Thrain, King Under the Mountain-in-Exile and Lord of Ered Luin, Kili and Fili, sons of Dis (Thorin's sister), Balin and Dwalin, sons of Fundin, Dori, Nori, and their cousin Ori, Oin and Gloin, sons of Groin (Gloin is Gimli's father. Gimli was deemed too young for this quest as he was in his 60s) and Bofur, Bombur, and their cousin Bifur.
    •Tolkien did write poems and songs in the book. If you watch the 1977 animated Hobbit, the music there is childhood.
    •Misty Mountains Cold is a great song and also a great bass song.
    •It's not just the treasure, but about reclaiming their homeland.
    •Ok, Scrooge McDuck.
    •And that is why he is called Thorin Oakenshield.
    •Well in the books, Thorin's cousin Dain Ironfoot, Lord of the Iron Hills, kills Azog. So Azog's presence in this trilogy was Peter Jackson wanting an additional villain.
    •Different sub-species of Troll. These are Stone-Trolls, which turn to stone when in sunlight. As for if they turn back, if you recall, Aragorn and the Hobbits come across them after Weathertop.
    •So in this trilogy, the wargs more resemble large wolves, while the wargs in the Lord of the Rings have a more hyena look.
    •Thorin is a seasoned warrior; he can tell by the arrows.
    •Rivendell.

    The Hobbit was a lighter story by Tolkien, aimed at young teens and children. The movies aren’t as epic because the stakes are lower. It’s more of an adventure than good vs evil. To give the movies more scale elements are borrowed from the similarian, a compendium of smaller stories that include things happening during this age that shaped how the lord of the rings setting came to be. It’s still a fun series and I enjoy it a lot but the tone is definitely different from LOTR because of the source material.

    The dwarves built a city, mining and creating things from the ores was their way of life, it was the center of commerce for the whole area, and it was their home.
    They have been homeless since the dragon was there. It's not just about the gold for most of them.

  • @powerofberzerker9487

    What's missing in the first third of the Hobbit is the danger, the urgency. The pace is kind of slow, so it's more like you're on the field trip with a group of characters, rather then having to destroy the most evil thing ever with Nazguls on your tail. But, as fairy tale full of excitement and silly happenings, they work quite well. LOTR is like 8/9 on seriousness and weight while Hobbit is 2/3.

    • @bookworm4174
      @bookworm4174 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's a the way the Hobbit was supposed to be. It's most true to the book in those moments. Tolkien had a very specific style where even scary moments were made funny. It was a bedtime story after all.

    • @powerofberzerker9487
      @powerofberzerker9487 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bookworm4174 Wouldn't say exactly that. The Beorn tearing apart orc and a warg and leaving them to hang in front of his house was never funny, but quite scary. Also, there's a switch up as the big battle comes when everything turns darker and tragic in the end.

    The third and last Hobbit movie (Battle of the Five Armies) is definitely better in the extended version. There is a lot of added battle scenes that make it a lot more fun and do every character much more justice. And it's only 20 minutes longer so that's not too bad.

    One thing to remember is this was based on a book Tolkien wrote for his children, before he wrote Lord of the Rings so the adventure is designed to be simpler and a bit less dark. I think Gandalf while he has his own purposes was trying to get Bilbo out of his comfort zone and thats why he had the thing set up that way

    Important note: As you know, Sauron gave Rings Of Power to humans, elves, and dwarves. But dwarves are immune to the influence of the One Ring the way humans are.
    Instead, the One Ring made them lust for gold and gems to an insane degree. It became an obsession. That's why the Mines of Moira were empty in the first movie: They got greedy, dug too deep, and accidentally awakened the Balrog.

    Trivia moment (no spoiler): the dwarves of Durin's Folk know the dragons because they have faced them in war. In the Third Age (the same age in which The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings take place), when Moria was already lost due to the presence of the Balrog, Scatha the Worm attacked their northern dwellings in the Grey Mountains. Many other dragons came after him, survivors from the end of the First Age and escaped the defeat of the first dark lord, Morgoth. After 19 years of war, the death of King Dàin I and the destruction of the last strongholds of the dwarves, they returned to Erebor. It was not long after that Smaug attacked them there as well. In the movie, Smaug is MUCH larger than he is portrayed in the books (and I LOVED IT, in this trilogy that dragon is Amazing), but he is still a dragon.
    Another difference is that, in the books, Thranduil and the elves don't turn their backs on anyone, they just aren't there. In the film, in my opinion rightly, they preferred to increase the dose to make the story more tense.
    Extraordinary, however, how Elijah Wood hasn't became older since The Lord of the Rings. We suspect he kept the Ring. 👀
    (I agree with Ash about the movie. Sadly, The Lord of the Rings remains on a whole other level. The Hobbit is just... not that masterpiece. But it's cool.)

    Peter Jackson had originally planned "The Hobbit" to be a two part movie. But the studio insisted on it being a trilogy. The movie therefore required a lot more "filler" text be written.
    LOTR splits naturally into three parts - indeed the book is often sold as a three volume novel. "The Hobbit" book is much shorter and doesn't split naturally into two, let alone three, parts.
    So it involved much more work for Peter and Fran to turn "The Hobbit" into a movie trilogy. And it shows with the movies being much slower paced and many of the scenes being overlong.
