Chris had a girl friend, maybe it was more of a girl that was a friend, and he said it was a toxic relationship. He knew that they were not good for each other but the sex was great! One night, early morning, she called him up sometime after midnight and asked him if she could come up to his apartment. He said ok. Between the time that he hung uptake phone from her and the time that she knocked on his door, Chris wrote this entire song! Chris has never disclosed who the girl is.
I relate to this story more than the original video. It makes the song more meaningful. I would love to see a video of this story redone with the song.

Chris would 'escape' reality into a room away from everyone else, and he'd listen to this free-floating phantom mermaid. I'll never understand why this show never made it to home-video, but that failure is why I clear my nostrils in Showtime's general direction.
