Hi Robert. At last I have tried your set up with two flies, with tippet ring and the extra not on the ring. I have fished for 4 hours to day, and it really worked! I`ve only being fly fishing for 5 years, and tried with two flies several times but allways with big big trouble. More or less. Thank you Robert for your informative videos. Keep on your good work. Been fishing two fly rigs for about 50 years. I use a loop to loop system to attach my tippet to the maim tapered leader (which I make from scratch) and attach my dropper by tying the fly on a short looped tag. I attach the dropper by putting the loop tru the the connection loop at the tippet connection point and pulling the dropper thru it’s own loop so it is secure. To change the fly loosen the connection and pull the fly out of its own tag loop and it is free. To add more tippet when it is too short after changing numerous point flys, loosen the loop to loop connection and pull the tippet out of it’s loop. Make a new looped tippet and add it … presto…new leader with tippet. If each dropper is on it’s own looped tag it is fast and easy to change droppers. I usually add about 30 inches of tippet and keep that distance more or less between 20-30 inches between dropper and point changing the tippet when it is too short to do so! In a way this is similar to adding a tippet ring but there were none 50 years ago. One last point …. I found having the dropper on a 12-15 lb. dropper reduced tangles but did not totally eliminate them! Hope this helps! Tight lines! From Nfld. Canada! 😀
Yeah, landing 2 fish caught on the same rig; it may be challenging, but what a great problem to have. remember the fight (it has only happened once) but can't really tell you how they both wound up in the net. I've never used tippet rings, but you've convinced me to give it a try, thanks Robert.
Thanks Robert, that's a nice method. I make my dropper with a perfection loop at the end which I attach to the main line above the tippet-leader doubleuni knot. This way the dropper rotates around the leader and doesn’t spin or tangle with the main line.
Hello Robert, "And I haven't noticed the second fly to get caught in the bottom." The bottom provides a large resistance, BUT it never pulls on your line. So the resistance comes in as slow as you strip. It's you and the fish pulling only. Thus you most likely wouldn't miss an increase in resistance provided by the bottom, because you hook the bottom exactly when the hooked fish moves SLOWLY. You would only miss to feel the bottom, if the fish breaks free in the same second, you hook the bottom. Again, not what happens with a slow moving fish. Using an 0,33mm tippet it's not common an average Sea trout breaks off easily anyway! The first coastal fly fisherman I saw fishing 2 flies was Claus Eriksen on Fyn. That was almost 30 years ago. I tried it for a while back then, too. Sea trout very often are to be found in schools. It's normal to hook 2 fish at the same time, when fishing 2 flies. The moment they pull opposite direction to each other, the tippet usually breaks. If you hook them on medium or high distance, you'll never realize, that you had 2 fish on and your second fly isn't in the bottom, but in another fish. This had happened to me several times. The moment I understood these details, I stopped fishing 2 flies and rather caught both fish one after the other. A Pitzenbauer (metal) ring in my experience is another weak point. Metal cuts into the (softer) tippet and lowers breaking strength of the leader. I mostly recommend not to use such rings. Ok, to be fair on an 0,33mm tippet as you use it, you often can give away some percentage of breaking strength. I fish thinner tippets for a better movement of my fly. I agree with you, Sea trout aren't much leader shy in most (not all) situations. Fishing 2 flies has more disadvantages in my view: - castability drops (less distance + harder to achieve a straight leader) - supports knots to happen - increases time lack between mouth shut (end of strike) and the fisherman feeling the fish to still be on the fly due to either additional slack for the upper springer fly or the upper fly not being in a straight line with the lower fly (by sinking faster or slower) - most likely lowers breaking strength in one way or another - the second fly often slows down the movement of the other fly in a negative way Bottom line... I stopped fishing 2 flies, the day I lost a second big fish when catching one big one. I broke off some second fish without realizing what happened though. Never anyone fishing 2 flies next to me could outfish me, while I fished one fly. In fact it was the other way round many times. Having said all this, nice video and I enjoyed listening to you spending time to learn further details in Sea trout fishing. It's a never ending journey! Cheers Bernd
I use a double uni with a separate strand on stiffish mono looped and sandwiched between them, a ROYAL pain in the ass.Tippet ring and knot separating dropper from tail fly strand quite ingenious. Tight lines, Robert.
Super Video! I startet using two flys on the leader because of Claus ... but i had problems in the beginning, because I wasn't very good at casting. When i got a little more practice, i started fishing again with two flys. I think its Increases the chance to get hooked into a fish!

I really wanna try fishing with two flies now, and i love your setup! But, what do i do with the tippet ring after a day of fishing? Do i cut it off? Will this not make me go through my tapert leader pretty fast? For now i have fished with a loop to loop connection from my tapert leader to the tippet, so i only had to change the tippet every time, and some times make a new loop on the tapert leader. and by the way, i love you video's! Hi Robert, I travelled to Denmark and a guide told me that they are using hard mono for the dropper fly. It should not tangle at all. Did you ever try it? What do you think about hard mono?
Hmmm realy interesting i have 1 question. do You User the Bigger Flyer at the end or at the beginnend. Sry my englisch is Not the best. I habe everytime the bigger Fly AT the end but IT sounds right to have the Bigger Fly fist .bigger Flyer AT the end oder lighter Flyer AT the end? Du you Use a big or Light fly at the end?
@Fly Fishing by Robert - Why not use a uni knot (after the tippet ring) for the dropper fly? 1. it will slide down (and stop at the point fly) when you catch a fish on the dropper, so that the point fly cant catch bottom 2. if you tie the dropper to the part of the line that exits the uni knot towards the rod (away from the point fly), the line will form an arc when fishing, and distance the dropper fly from the tippet
if you have a lot of tangles while throwing a double fly leader, 99% of the time its either casting technique or casting into the (hard)wind. Use a bit more souplesse while casting, and keep it easy on yourself, don't go casting into the wind just fish with the wind to your back. Keep the casts a bit shorter.
Or depending in wind direction you can do a Belgium cast or reverse it with the back cast either higher or lower depending on wind direction or just reverse the cast so your back cast is your fire cast into the wind

The extra knot on the tippet ring is genius, I cant believe this is the first time I heard of it. I am going to try this on Nymph rigs too.

aditional knot on the tippet ring works well with czech nymphing too. checked, and does not cause additional problems as it looks.
