I did a project in college about the history of Caribbean music. The history shows that calypso came before ska, Soca, reggae..then I saw an interview from Bob marley on youtube saying that Calypso influenced ska, I went ahead to listen to calypso from the elders and it was very similar to reggae at that time.
Hi Xyan! The gentleman in the interview for soca is called Ras Shorty I and he is in fact the creator of soca music combined with rhythms from both African and Indian music. Thanks for this tutorial 😊🇹🇹
They may have come from different countries/island. And belong to different genre, but one thing is for sure. They all came from the heart. And as the saying goes. When the music hit yuh.... you better move to the groove! One love!
Just discovered you, for my students. Great educational vid. One thing that i wish to point out is hvaing the oppourtunity to open and see 3 in carnations of The Skatalites, is that all 3 of their great guitarists; jah Jerry, Devon james andjerry hines, in his original pre-Jah jeerry days, both prior too and following the late great DJ, all playeed every genre; Jamaican ;Jazz, RnB, Bluebeat, Ska, rocksteady and reggae with all down strokes. Slainte from A barry Gordie Howe Towner
I agree. Tomatoes fall in the veggie bowl. I have never heard of Soca. Very interesting. Soca is a lot of fun to listen to. Love it. Thanks for posting. I grew up listening to ska and reggae and calypso.
I'd Like to see that second ska strum slowed down and explained exactly where and when you are pressing and releasing the fret hand? Loving your lessons and trying to get things right to respect the music.
I'm a drummer- and this explained it perfectly to me. I always saw reggae accented on "3" (at least on the snare). But I never really understood the other genres. Thanks for clearing it up!! :D
8:45 you can see the sharp down strokes and really hear the sound come out. Love Reggae slides. 9:15 you can hear the mute on the high strings following the sharp its like reverse ska mutes it has a way more uplifting sound ska has a more rugged harder punk inspired sound totally different. You can tell you got an amazing ear for music :D. I live in Canada so I enjoy hearing music from all around the world Reggae music makes you want to sing from deep in your soul which gives it that amazing sound when you sing it. The instruments lay down a very peaceful melody its like a tranquil river. Ska is like the rapids I can't understand how people mix them up either.
I can't claim to know a lot about it either but that was a really fun demonstration. I'd sure love to jam with you. Maybe add a little rock influence to some reggae music and come up with something new. It would be fun.
All music has ancestors and relatives, as beautiful and amazing as the peoples who invented them. Soukous, Indrani, Ska, Soca, Reggae, even Ragtime and Swing have some similarities.
Love your vids Xyan! I'm a guitar teacher from Canada (I'm chillin in Mexico now tho so the tropical beats are so fitting!). I've learned a lot from you! I also love that guitar, what model is it?
I find it interesting that you didn't mention the man who coined the term " Reggae " it was the late great Toots Hilbert. Idea maybe you should talk about guitar pedals sometime. That Roland Space Echo put the " D " in dub
Good explanation! But what about bassline, drumming differences? Since In reggae the backbone&the dominant instruments are BASS &dRUM. MY 2nd Quastion is how about dancehall, Reggaeton Hiphop , ZOUK different from Reggae? In my ear experience dancehall,Reggaeton,ZOUK samples old school reggae drumming, bassline &toasting for example RUB DUB from rockers drumming&becomes dancehall, ex 2 DEMBOW &BAM BAM from dancehall automatically becomes Reggaeton etc . Rap also sampled steppers drumming &toasting and so on.. can you explain it well?
I am wondering about the difference between Ska and Rocksteady. Is it played up or down? I heard its mostly the tempo and maybe some backup vocals. What do you say? Keep up the good job!
Yeah, I was wondering about Rocksteady too and expected him to point it out. As far as I understand Rocksteady is sort of Ska but downtempo, much like Reggae.
As soca goes your wrong, that first strum is a calypso strum. The problem is things are soo mixed up that if you don't go back to about 1970 your point of reference is miss placed.
What I'm getting from this: it's not about the tempo... And ska and reggae both are: kick, strum, snare, strum... repeat. It's about the bass. And that's the main confusion.

I'll definitely make a note of that my brother. Thank you very much🙏🏿
A reggae scholar told me that "reggae" means gospel as derived from "regi", a Latin term for devotional/ kings music.
Could you please do a guitar tutorial of Buddy Bye by Johnny Osbourne? I'm asking so politely.
The Ska Reggae Dancehall thing comes in like the Dixie Swing Bebop argument. As far as guitar goes from Django to Charlie Christian was a leap.

What’s the comparison Between Dancehall, Soca and Calypso
soca and calyspo belongs to trinidad and tobago

Soca looks like the brazilian Axé music, from Bahia.

A Tomato is a fruit except for tax purposes in the USA.
