      Yes if given the chance you should always vote on 9-8 if there’s any suspicion, it’s the inly way you have to either eliminate impostors or restrict the options of who can be an impostor. If hard sus you can throw both accuser and the accused at 9 sending game to 6v1 or on 8 you need more sus behavior on one person cause you’re sending game to a 7 where you can’t vote unless specific conditions are met and cleared crewmates are on same page.

      @@LemonNation The thing is gut feeling can also be a very powerful tool in among us. But overall I agree with you. I naturally gravitated towards shooting people when possible but usually im the only one who wants to shoot at 8 lets say in the lobbies im in. Good to know that there is math to back up my instinctive desire to shoot people but maybe that desire to shoot people simply originates from my generally aggressive playstyle I dont know. I always just felt like people are being overly careful when skipping on 8 and there are suspicions or in other words too afraid to do what should be done. And also I find the game to be much more interesting when taking risks and as hafu has shown here risks can actually pay off in the long run if you are taking the correct risks. Im just ranting a bit cause tbh it lowkey triggers me when people are being stupid like this.

      @@komperakompera2190 I think mathematically it's best for crew to shoot whenever they can because that increases their chances of getting an imp by a lot vs. only gathering information by skipping.
      9-8 people: Exactly as Hafu explained. Even without any extra info the chance of hitting is 25% (9) or 29% (8), which aren't that bad for random luck. Of course you're very likely to have some extra information so it bumps the chances even higher.
      7 people: Skip unless you're 100% sure who the killer is, such as when they confess or get caught by reliable eyewitnesses.
      6-5 people: If there are 2 imps you must shoot or gg. Blind random luck puts the chances of getting one out at 40% (6) or 50% (5) (But by now you must have some extra information.) If there's only 1 imp then the chances bump down to 20% (6) or 25% (5) *but,* crew also have a massive advantage since this is a free shot.
      4 people: Same as 7 so skip unless 100% sure. There's guaranteed only one imposter, so someone who was voted off was 100% imp. This can be extra info depending on voting patterns and who pushed for who to get off.

    The intro to this video completely broke me in confusion and then after a bunch of maths, completely blew my mind. I couldn't understand why voting on eight makes sense so I've spent ages going through probability maths in all sorts of scenarios and it's completely changed my perception of the game.
    .
    And it's true - even if it's a completely blind guess, if you eject someone on 8, by the end of the following meeting (where you eject someone on 6 or fewer because you have to to not lose), it is always over 50% chance that you'd have thrown out at least one imposter... a 56% chance at the bare minimum, and it increases in chance if you can clear anyone or if there are multiple kills the round between meetings.

  • @nucly
    @nucly 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    Beautiful explanation. To put some stats on this, voting on 8 you're choosing between 3 outcomes:
    1. Vote correct: 1v6 (very likely to win, say 90% for a crew win)
    2. Vote incorrect: 2v5 (50%)
    3. Don't vote: 2v6 (slightly better, say 60%)
    So not voting gives you 60% chance to win
    Voting gives you 90% * p + 50% * (1-p) where p is the chance of you getting the right person.
    Solving for p, if you have a better than 1/4 chance of getting the right person, you should vote.
    *Pulling those stats out of ..nowhere, but I think we can all agree 1v6 is super hard for impostor and 2v5 is just slightly worse than 2v6

    • @nucly
      @nucly 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Or to take the stats out of it, killing the impostor off early is sooo good for the crew that it's worth the risk of getting it wrong :)

      To make it more generic, you should vote when your chance of getting it right exceeds (S-L) / (W-L), letters representing your win % for each scenario (S)kip, (L)ose, (W)in.
      This gives some interesting conclusions:
      For a 2v8 where noone died and you have 0 knowledge, your chances of getting it right randomly is 2/9. (S-L) is tiny, since 2v8 is nearly the same as 2v7 (let's say 5% better), but (W-L) is still large since 1v8 >> 2v7 (say 25%). This gives 1/5 < 2/9 meaning you should vote even in this case.
      For a 2v5 (the 7 rule), let's assume L is 0% (impostors guaranteed to double kill on 2v4 and win). S is 2v5 (~50%) and W is 1v4 (~75%). So according to the formula you should vote when you're more than 66% confident. This slightly changes the rule of 7 from "never vote on 7" to "only vote on 7 when you're really confident you're getting an impostor".
      Again, intuitively, all of this hinges on the fact that voting out one of the impostors increases your win % so much that even huge gambles are worth it.

    4:50 I see what you are saying about the 50/50, but if the imposters give each other alibis or stories(lies or not), then they may carry the same weight as the two crewmate that were in medbay, right? Either set of stories could be lies and of course the two loners may also be lies. So you have 6 possible lies, from your POV of course, the other crewmates may be able to confirm or deny these lies, which makes trusting people difficult. At least this is my understanding of the game, in the end, I would still choose to shoot on 8 or 9, regardless of how good of a chance you have of getting an imposter.

      Its all about information, generally on first or double kill imposters won't self report, so you might clear reporter unless thier story is super sus. You should generally have an idea in which direction atleast 3-4 people went, or sometimes you're in a group and can clear a lot of people. She's saying in an average game you will have enough info for 50-50 chance. I think the bigger issue is to convince other crewmates, especially if you're unsure yourself.

    • @minakorocket
      @minakorocket 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      On the same point of information, you have the most people alive that are crew and can provide information during the first or double kill. This is why when you watch Yeti or hafu play you'll notice when they are crew they super focus to hear everyone's stories the first round especially and figure out everyone's pathing. It's also why when hafu is an imposter she immediately silences Yeti lol. Honestly watching their crew games is scary because I don't think I could pull off as an imposter in their presence.

    Downside to voting on 8/9 is that you got no idea anymore if there is 1 or 2 imposters left. If you vote wrong on 6 you know youre right or wrong before the next meeting cause either you lose that round or not. Ive been thinking that a few times in such situations. If you vote on 8 for example and you vote wrong, the remaining imposters can just pretend that one imposter is out by killing only 1 person each round or 2 in very long rounds. If you do that in turns and the imposter that doesnt kill gets a hard clear every round by sticking to people it will be very very hard to figure it out as crew.

  • @XFeuerFestX
    @XFeuerFestX 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree that voting on 8 is good against strong impostors, but it's nowhere near "slightly above 50%" to get an impostor out. Even if you can hard clear one crew - your vote is still between 4 crew and 2 impostors. And not only that, but impostors can kinda coordinate their votes so long as crew votes are split, so they still have an advantage unless all of crew agrees on a vote.
    It's still right sometimes though, because even an extra 20-30% chance to kill an impostor is often better than just letting the impostor get kills. Especially since strong impostors won't give up too much additional info (weak crew is the same here). Against weak impostors it's better to allow them more chances to make mistakes though. Also every kill with a very strong crew can eliminate more than one sus or show possible pairs which is much more valuable than a low chance shot in the dark.

    As crew you’re just trying to minimize the chance of impostor win. The highest chances of impostor win are at 6 and 3 because if two impostors at 6 a double kill wins the game, or a single at 3. Therefore you never want a vote (the only means you have to get rid of impostors) to possibly favor the impostors and out them in a 6/3 position where they can win easily, so eliminating that option means never voting on 7 or 4 (unless of course multiple people saw someone vent or kill, or just bad play impostor play scenarios)
    Without any information at all, you’re chances at catching an impostor at 7 are 2/7=28% and at 4 are 25%. But that means the chance of getting it wrong at 7 is 72% and at 4 is 75%, so if you vote on 7/4 you have a 72-75% chance of putting the impostor(s) in an automatically win condition (assuming proper play ofc).
    Voting at 9 and 8 there’s a 22-25% chance of getting impostor right, but the remaining 75-78% chance of getting it wrong does not lead to a win condition for the impostors therefore it’s a safer play as crewmate if you vote at those times. The odds take no additional information into account so if you piece together location of people, scans, proximity ect and you can vouch for 1-2 people on not making that kill a vote is just safer and will mathematically never put you in a bad spot (unlike 7/4 voting).
    Eliminating suspect crewmates is also a good play as it restricts options for impostors, they want to kill the cleared crewmates and blame deaths on suspects so it’s always a win for crewmates voting on 8-9.

      @mawley3266 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      But as crewmate you can also subtract yourself from the situation. So without any informations the chances of catching an impostor at 7 or 4 would be 1/3

    • @z1gu4rt
      @z1gu4rt 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mawley3266 yes didn’t think of that, makes the odds better to catch an impostor so i was wrong on calculation but the problem is you can end up in a impostor auto win scenario, that’s why you can’t take the 66% chance of putting yourself in an impostor win scenario.

      on 8 you know its not you and there's 2 imposters so with no info it would 28% and you will usually be able to clear at least one person so more like 33% (2/6) which is still p good cuz if you shoot right imposter loses 90% of those games. Even if you know next to nothing its better for crew to vote on the slimmest of sus there.

    Simply because you can't get the vote wrong when there's 7 left, it's better to vote when there's 8 or 9 left. There's also more crewmate votes to offset the 2 impostor votes.
    Same logic for when there's 4 left; voting when there's 5 or 6 left is better. Actually, you MUST vote when there's 6 left regardless.
    Only exception is when you are following through a trade 50/50.

      Because if you miss on 7 the two impostors only need a single double kill to win. If they double kill on 7 then its 3 crew and 2 impostors. The crew is highly favored to guess an impostor.i

  • @justinbutler1196

    Actually if you have 2 imposters and 2 crew mates you're voting between, you can account for the imposters to be 1/3 and the 2 crew as 2/3. Because if you call it 50/50 then 1 of the 2 crew members have to numerically be the imposter and that doesn't make sense lol

    The analysis would of been better if she would of just said voting at 9-10 is bad at times because there isint always enough information just suspicions. Voting at 8 is the only chance you really get at killing an imposter because you have more information and voting at 6-7 you need to be 100% correct or else imposters win.
