      Andrew DeSalvatore I meant that the questions asked in my country are way harder. I count as a "kid" as well, as I'm 16 years old.
      But that other bit interests me, you're telling me people can't even do basic math because their parents let them use calculators. That's concerning, to say the least.
      I'll check the US's curriculum for highschoolers to see how bad it is.

    • @andrewdesalvatore7262
      @andrewdesalvatore7262 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Taha Serdar Arlı Some people aren't able to do multi-step math problems in their head quickly. There have been times when someone asks a simple question in-person & people just take a little bit to answer it. Or they just turn to me for the answer (or I overhear the conversation and blurt on the answer).
      I also work retail so the biggest problem people face is interpreting $5.99 as $6 instead of $5. I might just be venting, but there were a few customers I've had (full grown adults) that I pretty much had to argue with that you're not multiplying $5 times 2units. I understand where they're coming from 5.99+5,99, your 1st instinct is to say 10.98 but that's wrong. 6+6 = 12. then subtract the 2cents, 11.98.
      I'm sure just like anywhere, I'm more likely to remember the shockingly stupid people. No matter what state/country/continent you live on, there will always be stupid people. Heck, I remember a GF I had, that thought she made A LOT more money than me at her job because they paid her everyOTHER week... compared to my EVERY week paycheck. So her paycheck would be double~ of mine... but I just couldn't get thru to her. She was a good girl, but math was not her strong suit.

      I think exploring why they didn't get them would be more interesting than the simple fast they missed. Was it a multiple choice question? Were they not invested in thinking about the problem? Did they have test anxiety and assume the obvious answer must be wrong?
      For the probability question, was it failure to understand the probability? Error in division? Or confusion about the question, seeing as "dice" as a singular is not the more common usage. I can see an adult misreading the question as a pair of dice, not knowing the answer and guessing wrong, for instance.

    In question 2, "an ordinary, fair dice" might be unclear to US audiences as a single unit is called a "die", so the question should read either "an ordinary, fair die" or "a pair of ordinary, fair dice", both of which would result in different answers. "Dice" as a sigular noun is, however, common in the UK, and these questions were asked of UK adults, so it makes sense.

      I can't speak about the second problem, but the first problem was a dumb "viral" math problem where the supposed correct answer from the answer book was 46. The question was a poorly worded trick question which apparently was asking about the number of people who were on the train to begin with after the 17 new people get on the train. Which is 65 - 19 = 46 people left on the train who were there to begin with, who did not recently get on. It's a stupid gotcha question that entirely depends on interpretation.

    • @kevinerose
      @kevinerose 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't believe he is correct about it being a question for 15 year olds. But I could see that the percentages of adults missing could be right. I don't know how it is these days but I went to school in the 80s and know they used to tell the kids back then not to worry about math because they "will never use it again after school." I heard that on TV. I heard that from other kids' parents. And I even heard teachers telling that to students.
      Hopefully, that mentality has changed now. I know in the 90s, they started to preach math and science to girls to try to get them interested in other careers. Teachers in America are not very smart when it comes to math so it is not surprising to hear them down playing it. Even math teachers only know so much. They tend to focus more on teaching skills and education theory than having solid math foundation.
      So that being said, I can see 25% of adults missing these questions since that is probably the same percentage that would have gotten it wrong when they were in school. When the kids are told by teachers that math doesn't matter, then the kids will believe them. They start guessing their way through math, getting minimum scores to pass without giving an effort to understand.
      I did student teaching for 1 year about 15 years ago. One class I got, the regular teacher let me know that some of the kids will sleep in the back of the class and it was best not to say anything to them. Sure enough, several would come in, take a seat in the back, and have their eyes closed the entire period. I asked some of the other kids in the class about their behavior and they confirmed what the teacher said - that it is what they do and we "just let them do whatever".

It would be interesting to know why so many adults got them wrong since a 12 year old should be able to do this. I’m in the UK and I understand that different countries have different maths abilities by age because of how seriously they take maths education. I knew a 30 year old guy with a full-time job, and could read and write, but didn’t understand the concept of a percentage. I.e. that 20% of one quantity is different than 20% of a another.

      Right. Although saying "a dice" colloquially means a "a die", and a "a pair of dice" unambiguously means two units of die. The word problem needs to be unambiguous to be fairly interpreted.

    So is question 1 going to be a "haha, I'm misapplying semantics" kind of trick? Because from basic reading comprehension, that is unambiguously 63-17+19=65, but I've got a feeling you'll tell me it's wrong and it actually is just 63-17=46.

      Then again, that's just using your intuition, which is what 25% of adults who got it wrong did. The full equation is
      x+17-19=63
      x-2=63
      x=65
      I'm just wondering how you knew to do 63-17+19. A lot of people probably did 63+17-19, which equals 61. I suppose the following thinking might work:"Right now there are 63. There WERE 19 people here in addition, so 63+19. But, there ARE 17 who are here now but weren't before, so 63+19-17."

    Question 2 is a horribly worded question. "Dice" is plural. Usually when it is used it refers to a pair (2) of dice. The odds are markedly different with 2 dice as opposed to 1 die.

    Question #2 is a little misleading. Dice is the plural of die indicating a pair. The answer you gave is for a single die. In a pair of dice there are 36 possible ways to roll the numbers 2-12. For example the number 5 can be rolled with four different combinations. They are a 1&4, 4&1,2&3, 3&2. The number 3 can only be rolled two ways. 1&2 or 2&1. Two out of a possible thirty six means one out of 18 times a 3 should show up. Or dividing 420/18= 23.33 times per 420 throws.

      The second question is loaded. The question ask "How many times is 3 expected "
      The correct answer is anything between 0 and 420. If the dice is truly fair and random there is no way to truly tell how many times it is "expected" to land on 3. It dose not matter if the dice is rolled 1 time or a million the only time you can expect a dice to land on a certain number is if the dice is loaded.

    • @timwhite1783
      @timwhite1783 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      agreed, the amount of times a 3 is rolled with the highest chance of occurring is 70. But the real answer is that it could be anywhere between 0 and 420. although to roll a die 420 times and never get a 3 is extremely unlikely it is still theoretically possible.

    I got them both right, but on the train question I had to make the assumption that "to begin with" meant "to begin (the start of the question) with". Otherwise one would assume that the train began with zero prior to the first person boarding.
