Dančo agree. The audacity of the the guy at 55s “if you don’t do something..” how about learning to use the safety equipment properly before preemptively berating coast guard. Still we have same type of wankers at our sailing club, too much money and ego to learn to be proper skippers/radio operator.
As I read this comment section I feel blessed to be among such luminaries, every one of them a credentialed expert in marine communications and emergency procedures
To be fair, the very least you can learn is emergency procedures. I'm going to reply what I believe I know from memory, then look it up and edit my comment: "Mayday! Mayday! Mayday! This is [name of ship], we are at [coordinates], we are sinking fast, we have 9 souls on board. Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!" [repeat, wait for response on radio - make sure you let go of the 'talk' button]. Edit: It's this: “MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY” “THIS IS… ” (say the name of your vessel 3 times. Say your MMSI number and call sign) “MAYDAY, THIS IS…” (say name of vessel) “MY POSITION IS…” (latitude and longitude, true bearing and distance from a known point, or general direction) “I AM…” (say nature of distress eg SINKING, ON FIRE) “I REQUIRE IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE” “I HAVE…” (say number of persons on board PLUS any other useful information - such as sinking, flares fired, abandoning to liferaft) “OVER” So even from memory, I was mostly right. Not difficult to remember - mayday X 3, details of ship X 3, location (if you can say a fixed point nearby, it can help, rather than JUST the coordinates), nature of emergency, number of people plus any useful stuff. I know there's the bit about immediate assistance but nobody should be doing a mayday call if they don't actually need urgent assistance, so it kinda goes without saying that someone doing a mayday call needs urgent assistance.
My dad worked on a trawler called the orkades Viking 3 and one night in the middle of a storm they all seen a man go over board just think in 2016 156 fishermen lost lives in the UK
Were those the actual calls? No coordinates, no information, just someone shouting "mayday"? If so, that was moronic, if not, the U.S. Coast Guard is near useless
People out here "bashing" the radio comms, these are your every day regulars civilians put in a extremely stressful scenario. I can't say I'd like to see how you'd react and communicate if that happened to you because it can be a life threatening scenario, but instead of bashing people for how they "communicated" over a radio, sit back shut up and be glad people did survive.
My left ear loved this very much.
Im deaf on my left ear, I had to turn my headphones around, gg

Haha why its only left??

“You need to do something”
Well let’s see, you could start off by checking the daily marine reports before taking your crew and passengers out.
I'm not sure why it doesn't result in criminal prosecution, not even doing the bare surface level minimum requirements to sail.
Mayday, mayday, mayday, we failed to plan ahead or check the weather.
I hope during the past two years individuals using their radio have learned proper mayday, request for assistance, and reporting procedures.
you take your small ass boat out in rough waters and when u need people to come risk their lives rescuing you you're giving attitude..
C Jahmal I thought the same exact thing. In Australia we have measures in place to prevent such Genius's doing such intelligent things .
How did they pass test for being having a boat, you need to say: MAYDAY, MAYDAY MAYDAY, THIS IS SHIP...

@Andrew H to operate the boat you need to pass a test
@@beckyrockhold2272definitely did not learn how to make a distress call to get my boat license (Australia)
0:16 "No motor! We're on a sailboat!" is what's being said.
I love the sailboat's name. Dagnabit! Glad to see most/all are safe and sound.
I see many folks decide to go out in rough water, weather report before you leave the dock anyone?
My left ear will not be denied

Holy crap, The USCG is using radio shack! Let's get them some icoms for Gosh sake!
One of the first things I noticed... the money probably went to their fleet of (very nice) vessels
i think it's a stock image that the video makers used
Radio Shack VHF, I noticed that too. That thing must be a relic.
stock footage of a scanner inserted by the editing folks. USCG Rescue21 VHF infrastructure is a combination of Motorola and HarrisRF base stations.
99 problems but a life jacket ain't one... Wear your life jackets good people... it will buy you time for someone to save your life...
Radio Shack?!
Everyone got the same bloody boat!
I guess the 100th problem was the final straw.
do you americans even have VHF radio procedures?
Wow...
