    I've heard that the ol' timers solved this problem by growing three times as much as you want to end up with. A third goes to critters and bugs, another third goes to acts of God, and you get what's left over. :-)

    We used to put a couple drops of mineral oil on the tassel end of the ear, to keep out ear-worms. It really did a great job preserving the beautiful sweet ears for the ground hogs and raccoons to enjoy.

    Great info! Ruth Stout built a fully enclosing cage for her corn in the days before electric netting. That seems a bit cost prohibitive. I have three dogs that roam close to the garden and the chickens. No losses from critters yet, either in the garden or coop. (Well, except for mice eating my beans...)

    I read about a man who's son and his friends were hanging out in the fruit orchard listening to heavy metal music. They had placed the boom box in an old cast iron bathtub. They went off to do something but left the music playing. The father was upset with his son but, as he walked out into the field he noticed there were no crows! He usually lost 80% of his fruit to crows! That year he did not loose any to crows!!! From then on he played the music in the field when the fruit was on its way to ripe.
    There is also a man (Paul Gautschi) in Sequim shoots a crow every year and hangs the dead crow on a pole, it keeps the other crows away. It does not work on the other birds though.

      No more like paper. They make bags for it. Pollination on top.and sleve for silk. It is strapped. Plastic would not be good. I put net bags on grapes and Apple. It would work after pollen transfer. Look at video on John Parkers grape. They make longer bags.

    Can you prevent the moths from being attracted to the corn by cutting off the silk? Also, can you put lights around the perimeter of the corn patch to draw them away from the corn at night?

  • @bh.774

    For generations, Cajun gardeners have used a couple drops of cooking oil at corn tassels to stop worms. I saw the comment about using mineral oil and my thought was that it might continue to flow downward. Cooking oil would get sticky in place shortly after applying with the aid of a little warmth and sunshine.
    South Louisiana weather has evolved to either floods or droughts with extreme heat waves. I'm abandoning ground planting (except for sweet corn) and switching to your wire raised beds. Besides, the ground gets further and further away as I continue to age from 73 .
    Thanks for sharing all the technical info and your experimentation.

    I'm open minded and interested in all you do on the farm. On my neighbors fields ,commercial, he plants every 4 to 6 inches apart, grew soybean or wheat the crop before, and he spreads compost from his dairy herd. However, if he doesn't put down some other fertilizers his corn leaves turn purple striped or yellow or etc and he has poor prduction. Sometimes in the past I've seen his corn stalks blow over in strong winds. The following year he adds boron and selenium and whatever his soil report advises him to do. I listened to the lady at Oxford you played for us and I don't understand what he can do to access the 92 nutrients that she says are plentiful for years to come. I have 20 acres and a lot you say about soil I can understand now better than the last 30 years

    • @iamorganicgardening
      @iamorganicgardening  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your neighbor should grow a winter cover crop ( Must keep a living root in the ground all year long ) and slowly reduce the fertilizer they use each year.
