The Pirate Queen who fought the Romans
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 2 พ.ย. 2024
- In the third century BC, Teuta, Queen Regent of the Ardiaei, led a kingdom known for piracy to great victories and expansion along the Adriatic coast. But their actions drew the attention of a growing power in the Mediterranean, Rome. The First Illyrian War pitted the might of the new Roman navy against a Pirate Queen. It is history that deserves to be remembered.

Some examples:-)
Teuta Selimi ( singer )
Teuta Krasniqi ( actress )
Teuta Rugova ( politican )

Illyrian dont spread bullshit
as a name it wasnt used until communist propaganda in Albania
you cannot find that name in any document or oral ancestry before the 40s.
Albanins throught history used biblical and islamic names that being said biblical names were sort of adapted to albanian language
for example you had name
John-Gjon
Jacob-Gjokë
Anton-Ndua/Andon(tosk/orthodox version)
etc
Also christian albanians here and there used some authentic albanian names
Dont bring something up as a fun fact and dont have objective empirical proof that was used
and i myself am albanian so this is general knowledge of names
Thank you to the international historians and especially to those of Western Europe and America who tell the true history of the Illyrian peninsula in a neutral way, because the Greek and Serbian states have often tried to manipulate history, of course with the help of Russian politics.
Half of my village are still called girls and boys with these names: teuta, agron, dardan, alban, ilir, aferdita ,molos, glauk,Gent ,bardyls (bardhyl),etc
Most of the names of gods and myths known as Greek have a meaning or connection with the Albanian language.
Even the Greek name- "graeci", in Albanian "women walk" is called a place where women almost dominated and walked barefoot in the mountains and prayed to their god that was Zeus in Albanian Zoti= God.
the famous tree "Druidi", in Albanian the “tree knows”a tree that knows everything, so a blessed tree.
Troja this name or this word is still used today in the Albanian language which means land, for example when someone has land for sale you can see us in Kosovo table: "troje ne shitje”= "land for sale"🇦🇱🇽🇰
Yes unfortunately Greece has stolen our history it’s real shame but this happens when Albanian politicians are so corrupted. However we Albanians know that history belongs to Albanian people.🇦🇱

Calling Teuta a "pirate queen" is like today, calling the Russian Putin "devil" from the previous president of USA and "very smart guy" from the present president. The illyrians and their kingdom were the lords of the Adriatic and Jonian seas and beyond, but when the Romans started to get rich, powerful and ambitious, they had to justify their actions to attach and ocupay the neibers. That's how it is today and that's how it was before. The winer writes the history.
Exactly. Also, incredible how they totally have avoided making any movies at all about Illyrians, is as if it's politically decided to keep them mentioned only in the books, where not too many bother to open and read.
OKAY... it's history that deserves to be remembered. I agree 100%. Fantastic video. All good stories involve pirates, and this is a very good story indeed. Interesting how early endorsed piracy happened; perhaps it's just something rulers have noticed over the years? Thank you for your work in this one.
It was common practice for kingdoms to use pirates as a way to get easy wealth from their enemies or competators while keeping plausible deniability. Nothing new under the sun.

Our grandfathers told us that the Montenegrins are nothing but Orthodox Albanians converted to Slav, they have been assimilated over the years, the churches have played a big role as well as the Islamization of Albania ... even today the Serbs are assimilating you by take the churches, the history, everything...
So many flags, yet the empire of the Illyrians had its centre in current day Bosnia and Herzegovina. Fail
@Rijad Emrulai @ALB-33 Some misconceptions here - it's likely that the vast majority of the Illyrian peoples (as well as Celts, among others in the area) were already latinized by the time the Slavs arrived (the ancestors of the Albanians being one of the only exceptions, remaining isolated from latinization in the mountains of Moesia most likely). Slavicization definitely occurred among some Albanians as well, but chances are that the majority of those slavicized were the already latinized descendants of the Illyrians who probably would have considered themselves Romans at the time. In any case, Albanian language and culture are a treasure of heritage and history - but lets not sink to nationalism or ideas of racial purity. The entire Western Balkans (and parts of Italy) share the heritage of the Illyrians, including modern-day south Slavs (even if it's not our only heritage).
Excellent remebrance of important history
I have a suggestion for a topic: the burial of enemy combatants with full military honours. It happens from time to time that a significant opponent (or a less significant one under unusual circumstances) is buried with great respect and incorporating national or religious elements that are not customary to the people performing the duty. Examples that come readily to mind are Manfred von Richthofen, and six crew or the Soviet submarine K-129.
Thank you for the most excellent presentation of history that you and Mrs THG produce.
No offense, but a much better idea: Battle of Samar. ( Our fallen deserve the highest honors )

Poliby, the Roman's history writer, tells that the Senate sent a delegation at Teuta and asked the Queen for "land and water". Teuta said, ok, give them "land and water". The gards took them and throw them in the Weill, telling them, "get water and land". So the delegates died and that's how the war started.

1:15 -- It was not Rameses II (the Great) of the 19th Dynasty who defeated the Sea Peoples, but a successor who reigned about 100 years later, Rameses III of the 20th Dynasty.
Rameses the Great was the one who clashed with the Hittites at the pivotal Battle of Kadesh, where both Rameses and Muwatalli claimed victory and which could therefore probably be regarded as a tactical draw. (Rameses' account of the battle contains what is likely a grossly exaggerated account of his personal valor.) It was, however, a strategic Hittite victory since in the long run it forced Egypt to acknowledge Hatti as a co-equal regional power.
However, by the time Rameses III faced the Sea Peoples, Hatti was gone, an earlier victim of the more general Bronze Age Collapse.

I still wish you would research the 12 Spanish Pirates Tried at court in Boston.. and one Pardoned by Alexander Hamilton due to the pleading from his wife. A Spanish Princess.. . A True Pirate Story...
Teuta the 🇦🇱 Queen , a small part of our ancient history that the greatest thiefs of the human kind the greeks were'nt able to steal....but we going to get it all back , its only matter of time now....nice doc . Respect.
Illyrians are for the Greeks only a barbarian tribe we need not they history😂😂😂
For the Greeks, the Illyrians were a barbaric race, we don't need their history, we have our own.
I’m glad I have he same name as a beautiful queen
The history of Rome and Greece has always been a captivating subject for me..they paved the way for Western society..
Illyrans aren't greek
But history in that whole region is captivating
@@SJ-nl6xl didn't say that.
@@molonlabe820 Illyrians are nowadays Albanians. Read more about Albanian ancient Illyrians. Greeks were and are our neighbors and so were Romans. Do you even know that three most powerful Roman emperors were Albanian? For example Clement the first. My surname is Kelmend, do you see that our names are alike? Ancient Illyrians are Albanians and they spoke Albanian illyrian language
@@SJ-nl6xl who cares about the barbarian illyrians
@@avitiusrufinus6980 unlike the italians and greeks you have no proof plus illyrians were not a homogenous group 😉
"Pirates may be fun, but they're still baddies." David Mitchell
Pirates are only fun in fiction. In reality they suck.
@randall2020 Did I say they were worse? All I said was that in real life, pirates suck.
And it's not "were" it is "are." Pirates still exist.
Can you explain why you thought my comment meant that were worse than anything?
I was simply responding to "Pirates may be fun." pointing out they are only fun in fiction, because in reality they are thieves and murderers.
Piracy is defined as "robbery on the high seas"
