It's interesting to see how other farms breed their sows. I work at a 4700+ sow farm in NE Nebraska, and our breeding target is anywhere between 235 and 250 sows per week. We use PCAI when we breed and end up with an average conception rate of 93%. Great video!
That's a big farm! Is that one of Pillen family farms barns? We've considered PCAI but haven't tried it yet. Sounds like it's working well for your farm. Thanks for watching!
I'm at a 5800 sow farm in Manitoba Canada. Breeding target of 290 a week, conception rate of 95%, also using PCAI. Most of ours is done Friday-Sunday so they farrow on a weekday, making it easier for the farrowers.

We start using them when they are a year old. We'll keep using them for a 2 or 3 years.
Hello farmer Dan, how do you prevent fights between them sows once you mix them in groups?
Hey Samuel. Our sows can choose to go in a stall or stay in the pen, so any sows that want to hide from a bully sow can hide in a stall.

Have you try to transfer in commonal pen 3days after 1st AI?
Thanks! No we haven't, other producers I know who have tried that haven't had much luck with mixing them that early.

Hey Dan, nice farm you’ve got. How many piglets do you get from each sow?
Thanks, lately we're averaging around 13 pigs weaned per litter, or around 30.5 pigs weaned per sow per year.
@@farmerdan87Impressive. Our farm is averaging around 11.7 pigs weaned per sow. Used to be better, we just got over a mycoplasma eradication.
Are your boars in contacts with eachother? And they don’t fight? Breeding barn I work at the boars will fight to death if they get in contact with eachother
Yes they're in pens with their brothers they've been raised with. We never mix pens or else I'm sure it'd be a royal rumble.

Hey Kevin. The sows are a Yorkshire/Landrace cross and we breed them to Duroc.

I can attest to wild boars that weigh over 150 having plenty pheromones. Those boars look a "tad" over 150. :) :)

How do you know when the sows are actually pregnant?
If they are not pregnant they will come in heat again 21 days after breeding. We also use an ultrasound machine 28 days and 56 days after breeding to confirm they are pregnant
Where are the 150 father to be boars?
At a boar stud an hour or so from here
If you are breeding 150 pigs how many would you say will be pregnant
85-90% normally get pregnant. We try to breed up to 140 to make sure each of our 117 farrowing crates has a sow farrowing in it.
What is the time frame after the rod is inserted to the sow emptying the package of sperm?
I'd say anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes. Gilts (first time bred sows) usually take longer than sows that have been around for a while.

Have the markets recovered since 98?
Yup there's been ups and downs since then but nothing as bad as 98. Prices were great this year.
