  • Randolph Martin, MD, speaks with Stephanie Mick, MD, and Arnar Geirsson, MD, about the growing/maturing field of robotic mitral valve repair. Dr. Mick discusses the uptick in robotic surgeries - believing that proven results have helped it stand the test of time.
The adoption of robotic surgery in other areas has increased familiarity with robots for trainees, and the emergence of transcatheter therapies have piqued patient interest in minimally invasive options. Dr. Geirsson says that enthusiasm in the younger generation of cardiac surgeons is also driving interest in robotic techniques.
Dr. Mick emphasizes that robotic mitral valve repair has the same efficacy and complication rates as conventional surgery with the additional benefits of improved cosmesis and shorter length of stay. They highlight that the robot is simply a tool in the hands of a skilled surgeon.

    About the AATS Mitral Conclave:
David H. Adams, MD, and Anelechi C. Anyanwu, MD, serve as the Program Directors of the AATS Mitral Conclave - a meeting that Dr. Adams created with the American Association for Thoracic Surgery in 2011. The biennial meeting brings the world’s leading experts together to examine all aspects of mitral valve disease, associated conditions, and treatment. The meeting featured more than 350 presentations, 40 focused breakout or lunch sessions, combined with four main plenary sessions - with over 900 attendees from 52 countries.
