@@isaiahj3968 I didn’t mean to give the impression that I built houses without roofs. What I mean is I refused to build houses with really steep roofs. I kept my homes with 7/12 pitches or less. Preferably 5/12 was about ideal. Something that workmen can safely walk on. I own a rental property built in the 1880’s or 90’s. It’s a really tall 2 story house with a 9/12 roof that killed a roofer in the 1950‘s. This was before my time but my Father was there and had just been talking to the guy. I myself completely stripped and reroofed this same house in the early 1980‘s. It had asphalt shingles over the original wood shingles. I stripped all that, installed new plywood decking and asphalt shingles. This man’s death was in my mind the whole time I was up there. It’s due for replacement again. I’m not taking any chances with this bastard. I’m going to build a safety platform all around it with plenty of support brackets and planking on its deck. Thank God I nor anyone with me has ever fallen in all these years on all these jobs. Take your time, work safely, don’t take chances, always use the best equipment, no alcohol or drugs period. Good luck and best wishes to you.

I worked at a lumber yard a couple years ago and an immigrant and a amish guy fell off a 40 foot metal roof doing this on a day with light rain. They sadly passed and that specific crew still don’t wear harnesses from what their subcontractors said picking up their material after it happened. That cautionary tale always hits hard when i see guys on less than ideal roofs. If i had a family there’s no point in not being safe, it’s just your ego saying you’re not that type of guy to just fall, but you just never know when stuff happens.

I worked as a labourer for a roofing company at 15 I shouldn’t have been but they let me up on the roofs we worked on and not one of us wore a harness (I questioned it but found out what kind of workers they were after a couple weeks and they got more comfortable, one guy started popping percs and the other was a coke head so it all made sense)the only time I wasn’t allowed on the roof was when they were like this which is completely understandable, I wouldn’t have gone up if they allowed me unless I had the proper protection and safety gear, some of the ones I was on though were three stories high not to scary but the drop seems much much higher then it actually is from up there then it does down on the ground, I liked the job just wish I had a good crew that I could’ve stayed with that weren’t a bunch of druggies

There was no such thing as harness then. Just like the blokes on the high scaffold planks in Liverpool and London with no kick boards hardness or safety bars. Nowadays everything is contained on the outside and within the scaffold area on all sides and overhead. Good to have safety.
