a little trick i found out while fighting NKG on Radiant a lot. if he's going to do the fireball-uppercut. walk after him, and stop in the spot where he starts the uppercut, this'll put you in a spot where you're safe from the fireballs. for the dash he performs with the fire-trail behind him, i prefer to not sharp shadow dash him there, since it has a bit too much risk, and if you are using sharp shadow, staying in a corner is useful, since you can create some easy opportunities to dash through him and you'll be at a decent distance to approach his fire bats, to dodge his pufferfish attack, and to dash through him when he performs the uppercut
I beat him today. It took me over about 40 tries, although I was so relieved and happy when I did it. I learned the attack patterns on my own, and little by little I got to the end. I'd recommend quick focus instead of hive blood. You have enough time for 2 heals (with shape of unn) on the fire bat attack, 1 on the floor spike attack and 2 at the end of the wall of fire attack. Do not try to heal any other time apart from when he is staggered. As this will most likely end in your getting hit. If you are late healing, do not try to sneak in an extra, as it is not worth the risk. I you jump to avoid the floor spike, you may not have time to sneak in a heal. Lastly, I'd recommend jumping over him with that floor dash attack, rather than shadow dashing through.
Shape of unn is a must have for this fight. You can heal a lot during the spikes attack and also during the flames from the floor. If you also have fast focus you can easily heal 3 masks during these attacks. You're also shorter than the bat attack so they fly over you
New time player just chiming in, was struggling on this boss hardcore and other strategies I had seen just weren’t working out for me. This strat was perfect and finally allowed be to beat the nightmare king himself, thank you so much!

Good fight! I think I used Quick Focus, Sharp Shadow, Longnail and Unbreakable Strength for mine (can't remember exactly). Hardest boss I've ever fought and by far the best. ^^
This video gave me anxiety. This also reminds me, awhile ago I tried to defeat NKG, I did end up defeating him but it took me all night. I surprisingly didn't see this video at the time-
Hiveblood uses too many notches to really be usefull most of the time. I only ever use it in the White Palace and in the Hive. I use it in the Hive because if you have it equiped there the bees will leave you alone. NKG does 2 masks of damage every time he hits you and Hiveblood only heals 1... and very slowly. Most of the time I get hit again before it heals. I prefer to use charms that up my damage and overall health. Several of NKGs attacks give you plenty of time to heal a mask during them. For example: * Dash Uppercut: There is just enough time to position yourself between the fireballs and heal before the next attack * Cloak Spikes: Position yourself between the spikes and there's plenty of time to heal a mask while they shoot up * Flame Pillar: Just keep walking until the final pilar starts. You have just barley enough time to heal before the pilar ends. * Fire Bats: If you have Shape of Unn equiped the little slug is too short for the bats to hit and you can get a heal or 2 off during this attack. My prefered charms for the NKG fight are Shamanstone, Spell Twister, Sharp Shadow, Grimchild of course, and either Shape of Unn or Unbreakable Heart.
DO NOT POGO HIM, the timing on the attack where dives down and swipes to the side is barely pogable to begin with, also when he stands up for the teleportation you can get hit because his hitboxes gets like half as bigger suddenly making you lose 2 masks. It's only good to up slash on the attack where he spawns 4 pillars of fire, you can do it 3 times without even risking that much
I have been struggling in this fight since it released. I die in 4 back-to-back hits, so I never get enough time to adapt. It feels like his moves are unreactable, unpredictable, and my survival is luck-based. Watching this is my only hope to learn the tells of the attacks.
Quick tips from someone who did nkg hitless for flamepillars stuttestep so you can hit him way more often if you have sharp shadow to avoid the foward-up combo just dash through or away and stand still the fireballs will miss except you're to close to a wall and his forward movement gets stopped a little then you're fucked for firebats jump over the first and dash over the second you have to find a sweet spot of distance When he does the down forward combo with the fire trail desolant dive has enough invinsibility frames to not get hit and it does enormus damage in between attacks stand still nkg usually spawns in just right in that sweet spot where these tactics work Don't be discouraged if you can't do it, it took me about 100 tries to get him the first time and another hundred to get him radiant I was using a spell-build to consistantly spam him with dive I think it was sharp shadow, spell twister, shaman stone and soul eater if you can overcharm I'd recommend strength or quick slash Hope this helps
Just equip Unbreakable Strength, Quickfocus (your only chance at healing), Steady Body, Sharp Shadow (literally half of your damage) and learn his attacks, if you predict the spikes you can heal, also the attack where he does the swing at the floor and then jumps up and strikes with flames at the ground is another chance at healing. Other than that it's all execution because you have to focus more on dodging than hitting, if you will go out of your way to do damage then you are dead
@@benhart8685 Yea but it's 7 charm notches... When you can just like Hornet said get good, equip sharp shadow, steady body and unbreakable strength and you will be way more efficient, plus you'll still have enough charm notches to add quickfocus if you really want to heal in this fight
One insane tip i have that will help you TREMENDOUSLY is that when NKG does the uppercut, there will never be a fire ball right next to where he ended the uppercut, just dash away and position yourself fairly close to him and you'll practically never get hit
Just memorize the attacks and add to your muscle memory the dodge pattern on every attack Sneak in a hit or two when he dashes on the ground to you,. throws the bats towards you or spawns the laser beams from the ground. Never try to hit him when he teleports up and dashes towards you leaving a red trail that deals damage. How to dodge the attacks? -Teleports up (jump any attack would be when he in the air) if he dashes on the ground, jump one more time. -Spikes from the ground - Walk on a safe space as soon as you can, if you react fast enough, you can ever walk past 2 spikes and get no hit. -Dashes to you on the ground then explodes leaving 5 falling orbs that deal damage - if you are far away just dash or walk in the direction he's dashing and stay close to where he exploded but with an offset. if he is right almost on top of you, shadow dash trough him. -laser beams from the ground - Walk slowly towards him, he will always spawn 4 laser beams, when the final one spawns attack him at least once (if you are good you can land about 6 hits between the lasers) -bats - jump once as high as you can then dash towards him, that attack is a free 2 hit honestly. -he goes into a ball and spams orbs - stay on the ground and watch the first 2 orbs from the ground up that come towards you. it's just like an easy obstacle course. It's down? jump once. it's up? just watch it get over your head. It's both up and down? Jump a bit higher. practice makes perfection guys. That's how I beat him on radiant, good luck! "Edit" Charms I used in God Home: Unbreakable Strength (You can use Fragile Strength as well, it's dream dimension so it won't break if you die.) Longnail (for extra range) Mark of Pride (for extra extra range) Quick Slash (to sneak in an extra hit on two on every attack) If you are beating him in the Troupe's Tent, you obviously need to have his accessory equipped. Put it instead of the Mark of Pride.
I finally beat him.... Only took 7 or so hrs straight of basically bashing my head into the wall to only beat him out of the blue hitless. Charms equipped were sharp shadow unbreakable strength and heart, quick slash, and longnail, sharp shadow makes dodging his attacks much easier, as it slightly increases your I-frames during dash.
Just dash through him, then back toward him. You'll end in a safe spot, or close enough to one that you'll be able to adjust as they fall. Really easy once you get the timing.
Hiveblood is not gonna heal you that much anyway in this fight, it's better to use quickfocus and know when to heal (if you predict the spikes and the attack where he swipes to the side and then jumps if you know where to stand), Sharp Shadow on the other hand is literally half of your total damage in this fight lol
The furthest i got was second balloon. The issue is, i have a choking problem. As soon as i feel good about a run, i start fumbling, which leads to more bumbling, until i die.
Im sorry but no youtuber ive watched defeat this boss yet has figured out that when NKG charges at you, and then flies upwards and sends down fireballs, if you just dash through him, and then literally stand still, no fireball hits you. You always position yourself perfectly if you just dash through him once.
Hollow Knight be one of the games you *SHOULDN’T* play while sick. Sneezing gets you killed. Blowing your nose, coughing, having to get up and wash your hands get you killed. And it doesn’t help that the bastard keeps killing me in the first 5 seconds… this is gonna be a tough fight.
Only tip I can give is to shadow cloak at the end of the arena when NKG in pufferfish form. Stay one step close to one of the walls and use shadow cloak to the wall only if there's double sphere or more than 1 sphere from ground. The thought in my head was double makes us lose time as we fall and 1 jump might not be enough to dodge the other.
Yours is not the easiest, but the safest way. Easiest way is not actually a thing, its something natural. When you practice enough (30+ times for me) you master his attacks, and at that point the easiest way is how efficent you can be while dodging and countering his attacks. This boss is not the type you can half-ass or cheese with high hp and quick healing. Thats why i don't recommend lifeblood charms. I always go for quick slash and mark of pride, with these charms you can get insane amount of hits while he stays still during the fire pillars and red bats. And if you move slowly during the fire pillars, you can get 4-5 hits in, which is BIG for this fight. I highly recommend fragile charms since they can't be broken in dreams, you can use the fragile strength which goes well with a quick slash build, or you can be safer by equipping the fragile heart and adding grubsong or defenders crest. Sharp shadow is also viable, but its only useful if you aren't familiar with pogoing. Shadow dashing with this charm does a single nail hit worth of damage and by jumping up and pogoing you can get the same amount of damage without using your shadow dash. So its a waste of notches if you can pogo without taking damage. Its quite a shame that you need to have the grimmchild equipped to start the fight and the grimmchild doesn't even join in. But its possible, you just have to sit there and fight nkg for couple hours and you got it :P.
My go to kit for this fight is Nail Master's Glory, Long Nail, Unbreakable Strength, and Sharp Shadow. Since Grimm moves all over the place, I try to maximize the damage I do by hitting him with a couple Great Slashes when I'm able to.
When I did radiant NKG I did this (I believe my charms were mark of pride, sprintmaster, dashmaster, sharp shadow, and quick slash): 4 bat attack: jump over 2nd bat, dash, greatslash, start charging greatslash again as it should swing a second time, dealing damage Regular dash: I move away until he reaches the ground, then I jump up and sharp shadow towards him as he dashes Fireball attack: I walk away as he slashes at me, then sharp shadow towards the middle of the arena as the fireballs get close to the ground For the pufferfish attack, dodge, then at the last fireball, sharp shadow towards the middle so he can't force you towards the side of the arena For the 4 flame pillar attack, I would time it so the 4th flame pillar would spawn on one side of him, then I would sharp shadow to the other side and great slash him If he starts the slash part of the fireball attack while you are at the side, the best thing to do is sharp shadow through him
On the fireball attack, the fireballs will never hit you if you're next to him when he finishes the dash from the floor to the air, you can get almost 2 extra hits in there with this method, so just dash away and position yourself fairly close to him when the fireballs spawn, this worked for me and it might work for you Edit: Also congrats on the radiant! I did it about a month ago too!
I feel like I'm in hell dealing with regular NKG. I keep making stupid mistakes and I get frustrated because everything is going wrong. You know what, I'm gonna take this dude down. I need my Grimmchild at its full power. Wish me luck!

This boss seems insane at first. You just have to practice over and over until you learn how to dodge each attack. Sharp shadow is useful for extra damage. Only do nail damage on fire pillars and fire bats. And only try to heal when he’s a bat. This boss is really fun when you learn it. Good luck :)
when he does the flame pillar attack he does 4 of them so right after the fourth one use abyss shriek to do big damage (should hit him 3-4 times if used right)
It's too risky to use spells in this battle, pretty much the only good place to use spells is in his pufferfish attack and you manage to find the safe spot which is located between the fireballs dirrectly down and to the side... It's better to just equip Unbreakable Strength and hit him max 3 times dealing nearly the same damage with way less risk
@@WojtekXD-bx7jb after fourth flame pillar you have well enough time to pull off the abyss shriek, I find using spells during his balloon phase risky compared to flame pillar abyss shriek though it is my personal preference
@@WojtekXD-bx7jb Risky? No it's extremely easy to get a lot of spells in this battle, pufferfish is actually one of the worst attacks to use your spells at, you can use spells at bats (dodging with Shadow dash and then getting 2 hits with Shadow vengeful spirit), using howl at the pillars (slowly move in the direction of nkg until he uses his 4 pillars then you howl right below it) and when he slashes this is risky tho so be careful.
the setup i used was to use abyss shriek when he does the flame pillars use shaman stone to increase the abyss shriek power grimm child quick focus (or soul catcher and grubsong) and fragile/ unbreakable strength use shade cloak during his fire uppercut thing dash out of his fire trial dash attack dodge the bats dont mess up on spikes and do some mix of shade cloak monarch wings and normal jumping when he inflates and just learn his moveset through trial and error

This video gave me anxiety. This also reminds me, awhile ago I tried to defeat NKG, I did end up defeating him but it took me all night. I surprisingly didn't see this video at the time-
FINALLY SOMEONE OTHER THAN ME USES HIVEBLOOD IN BOSSFIGHTS
That double damage is wow just imagine if you didn't get invince
Hiveblood uses too many notches to really be usefull most of the time. I only ever use it in the White Palace and in the Hive. I use it in the Hive because if you have it equiped there the bees will leave you alone.
NKG does 2 masks of damage every time he hits you and Hiveblood only heals 1... and very slowly. Most of the time I get hit again before it heals. I prefer to use charms that up my damage and overall health. Several of NKGs attacks give you plenty of time to heal a mask during them.
For example:
* Dash Uppercut: There is just enough time to position yourself between the fireballs and heal before the next attack
* Cloak Spikes: Position yourself between the spikes and there's plenty of time to heal a mask while they shoot up
* Flame Pillar: Just keep walking until the final pilar starts.
Love how he didn't even up slash or pogo, i feel like he's the only one who beat him this way
He did. 2:22
DO NOT POGO HIM, the timing on the attack where dives down and swipes to the side is barely pogable to begin with, also when he stands up for the teleportation you can get hit because his hitboxes gets like half as bigger suddenly making you lose 2 masks. It's only good to up slash on the attack where he spawns 4 pillars of fire, you can do it 3 times without even risking that much
@@WojtekXD-bx7jb Agreed
I have been struggling in this fight since it released. I die in 4 back-to-back hits, so I never get enough time to adapt. It feels like his moves are unreactable, unpredictable, and my survival is luck-based. Watching this is my only hope to learn the tells of the attacks.
Quick tips from someone who did nkg hitless
for flamepillars stuttestep so you can hit him way more often
if you have sharp shadow to avoid the foward-up combo just dash through or away and stand still the fireballs will miss except you're to close to a wall and his forward movement gets stopped a little then you're fucked
for firebats jump over the first and dash over the second you have to find a sweet spot of distance
When he does the down forward combo with the fire trail desolant dive has enough invinsibility frames to not get hit and it does enormus damage
in between attacks stand still nkg usually spawns in just right in that sweet spot where these tactics work
Don't be discouraged if you can't do it, it took me about 100 tries to get him the first time and another hundred to get him radiant
I was using a spell-build to consistantly spam him with dive I think it was sharp shadow, spell twister, shaman stone and soul eater if you can overcharm I'd recommend strength or quick slash
Hope this helps
Gonna try this setup, since I haven't even been able to get past NKG's first phase so far. (yes, I know I 'm pathetic)
Honestly, I would try fragile/unbreakable strength, quick focus, deep focus, grubsong. It's great if you don't do too well on double damage bosses
I've got destroyed by normal grimm something like 15 times before beating him and I still havent tried NKG, trust me you are not patetic
@@martinacocca4225 15 times? Ha.haha. HAHAHAHAHAHA
hey
did you beat him?
@@hylianmono yep
Just equip Unbreakable Strength, Quickfocus (your only chance at healing), Steady Body, Sharp Shadow (literally half of your damage) and learn his attacks, if you predict the spikes you can heal, also the attack where he does the swing at the floor and then jumps up and strikes with flames at the ground is another chance at healing. Other than that it's all execution because you have to focus more on dodging than hitting, if you will go out of your way to do damage then you are dead
thorns of agony would help
@@benhart8685 Not really, one nail hit worth of damage when you are getting hit for 2 masks is not that great, steady body is way better here
@@WojtekXD-bx7jb ok by the way quick focus with deep focus let you heal two mask by the way
@@benhart8685 Yea but it's 7 charm notches... When you can just like Hornet said get good, equip sharp shadow, steady body and unbreakable strength and you will be way more efficient, plus you'll still have enough charm notches to add quickfocus if you really want to heal in this fight
@@WojtekXD-bx7jb ok by the way maybe use a charms that boost your nail range
It’s a boss that seems like learning attack patterns is paramount.
la primera que venci a NKG gracias a esta guia y otras fue hermoso, 2 semanas para solo subir de nivel el amuleto del Niño de Grimm a nivel 4
One insane tip i have that will help you TREMENDOUSLY is that when NKG does the uppercut, there will never be a fire ball right next to where he ended the uppercut, just dash away and position yourself fairly close to him and you'll practically never get hit
This need a lot of practice and limitless times of deaths so you can achieve such patience and skills required to beat it. Well done 👍🏻
Key thing: patience
I love the audience behind are just vibing
What if hornet fought dog?
Every time I search best way to beat nkg they just say git gud
just git gud
Hornet is this you behind this
So does this video. It is just a learn patterns and attack when you can.
Protip: dont get hit
Just memorize the attacks and add to your muscle memory the dodge pattern on every attack
Sneak in a hit or two when he dashes on the ground to you,. throws the bats towards you or spawns the laser beams from the ground.
-laser beams from the ground - Walk slowly towards him, he will always spawn 4 laser beams, when the final one spawns attack him at least once (if you are good you can land about 6 hits between the lasers)
-bats - jump once as high as you can then dash towards him, that attack is a free 2 hit honestly.
"Edit"
Charms I used in God Home:
Unbreakable Strength (You can use Fragile Strength as well, it's dream dimension so it won't break if you die.)
Longnail (for extra range)
Mark of Pride (for extra extra range)
Quick Slash (to sneak in an extra hit on two on every attack)
If you are beating him in the Troupe's Tent, you obviously need to have his accessory equipped. Put it instead of the Mark of Pride.
Downward fireballs destroy me everytime even though im expecting them....
Really easy once you get the timing.
you just beat him. thought there was gonna be some kind of cheese
Sharp Shadow hard carried me into beating him. I didn't use hiveblood but that's what got me through the Radiance fight
Yeeees
Sharp shadow is so cracked for this fight
My charm setup/combo for this boss is completly different lol
This fight was super time consuming to learn, then it was really fun to beat. Now I'm stuck on radiance lol.
U can tell he was getting impatient after the 2nd last stagger
Yes, the best way: Just learn his patterns and dodge like this guy
My go to kit for this fight is Nail Master's Glory, Long Nail, Unbreakable Strength, and Sharp Shadow. Since Grimm moves all over the place, I try to maximize the damage I do by hitting him with a couple Great Slashes when I'm able to.
When I did radiant NKG I did this (I believe my charms were mark of pride, sprintmaster, dashmaster, sharp shadow, and quick slash):
4 bat attack: jump over 2nd bat, dash, greatslash, start charging greatslash again as it should swing a second time, dealing damage
Regular dash: I move away until he reaches the ground, then I jump up and sharp shadow towards him as he dashes
Fireball attack: I walk away as he slashes at me, then sharp shadow towards the middle of the arena as the fireballs get close to the ground
For the pufferfish attack, dodge, then at the last fireball, sharp shadow towards the middle so he can't force you towards the side of the arena
For the 4 flame pillar attack, I would time it so the 4th flame pillar would spawn on one side of him, then I would sharp shadow to the other side and great slash him
If he starts the slash part of the fireball attack while you are at the side, the best thing to do is sharp shadow through him
On the fireball attack, the fireballs will never hit you if you're next to him when he finishes the dash from the floor to the air, you can get almost 2 extra hits in there with this method, so just dash away and position yourself fairly close to him when the fireballs spawn, this worked for me and it might work for you
Edit: Also congrats on the radiant! I did it about a month ago too!
I had to learn how to play the game again just to beat this boss
this boss was VERY hard at first, but after like 1-2 hours of practice i beat radiant NKG
I feel like I'm in hell dealing with regular NKG. I keep making stupid mistakes and I get frustrated because everything is going wrong. You know what, I'm gonna take this dude down. I need my Grimmchild at its full power. Wish me luck!
@@atomicreactor6033 you just keep practicing and know the tactics, the way to beat him is just keep surviving his attacks. I was on the verge of screaming(don't judge me lol) but I just kept fighting over and over, took about 40 tries. Once u beat him he becomes rlly fun boss in God home. In reality nkg is just a harder hollow knight boss, you've experienced those, havent you?
@@axyndey I shut off the game before I want to scream, so I can't talk smack. I eventually realized that I just needed to take my time. I used his balloon attack as a health marker, as was suggested. It helped a lot. My charm loadout helped too. I don't remember what all I had, but it definitely helped a lot
2 hours and radiant already? Damn you must be good, it took me 5 hours to get from dying at the first 5 seconds to clapping ascended lmao.
This fight is so easy and his patterns are extremely telegraphed. Everybody sucks because they panic over double damage.
Still haven’t beat NKG yet, but that’s absolutely what held me back from beating the radiance sooner
The other guides look impossibly skilled. This looks more like what I’m capable of. Thanks for that
Shriek under grimm when he does flame towers
Sharp shadow, Grubsong, unbreakable strength and lifeblood core was the set I used.
one way to defeat NK is to see how speedrunners defeat NK, and use the shape of Unn (in 2 of his attacks you can get healed with this charm)
Shape of unn, deep focus, and quick focus is stupidly good against this boss
Try getting to the point when you don't need to heal at all or only when it turns into bats you will see how much you have improved.
@@tryhardpenguin9636 Deep focus is not really good.
@@diztress I'm able to beat this boss without spamming healing now, but this build helped me when I was beating p5

I was stupid and just called them away for a stupid charm I didn't realize that it replaced tiny Grimm but I have 38 charms all 10 abilities and a almost awakened dream nail so I have to complete a different save file and awaken my dream nail in the first one
This boss seems insane at first. You just have to practice over and over until you learn how to dodge each attack. Sharp shadow is useful for extra damage. Only do nail damage on fire pillars and fire bats. And only try to heal when he’s a bat. This boss is really fun when you learn it. Good luck :)
watching this make me forget i can up slash
Love how the comments are just braking down the fight and each consistantly showing diffrent and unique knowledge.

no pogoing? no baiting the flame pillars? no shape of unn? dashing through the flame kick?? no pivoting while dodging fire balls ??
WHAT IS THAT ABOMINATION OF INEFFICIENT MOVEMENT
when he does the flame pillar attack he does 4 of them so right after the fourth one use abyss shriek to do big damage (should hit him 3-4 times if used right)
It's too risky to use spells in this battle, pretty much the only good place to use spells is in his pufferfish attack and you manage to find the safe spot which is located between the fireballs dirrectly down and to the side...
Oh my god. Sharp Shadow. I did it... Thank you. Anybody else thats stuck, just be patient. Once you get it its easy peasy lemon squeezy.
I'm gonna try to guess some of the charms
Hiveblood (obviously)
Mark of pride or longnail
Quick slash
Sharp shadow
You can hurt the bat while he's staggered to do more damage! This is most likely known now lol
One pro-tip for this boss: GIT GUD
the setup i used was to use abyss shriek when he does the flame pillars use shaman stone to increase the abyss shriek power grimm child quick focus (or soul catcher and grubsong) and fragile/ unbreakable strength use shade cloak during his fire uppercut thing dash out of his fire trial dash attack dodge the bats dont mess up on spikes and do some mix of shade cloak monarch wings and normal jumping when he inflates and just learn his moveset through trial and error
Easiest cheese of normal Grimm is to make him do pufferfish move and spam abys shriek
A even easier way is do a full magic charm build and spam magic when he gets on ballon mode :p
Good luck getting to that point.
But he can't be hit in ballon mode :/
Magic can hit him on ballon mode, i predent make a video proving my point later

Yep. I don't know whether I want to say just use a nail build because I never have to heal four or six masks or if I want to give them the strength quick focus deep focus grubsong that carries you through PV and absrad
Until he suddenly steps backwards...
I have noticed that every boss I struggle with deals 2 damage
i say this as somone who took 200+ times to finally win this.
you can do so much more damage.... so many apertuinitys to use spells or even take advantage of his position
As someone who can almost beat this in radiant this is so true, using spells and damaging nkg a lot Is way easier than thought.
So the tip is "get hit a few times and then defeat him"? Got it!
Banished them before getting unbreakable strength actually gonna kms
I don't think wasting charm notches for hiveblood is the easiest way to beat this boss. By the time you manage to resist long enough to regenerate that mask you can just do it focusing when you have the time. You could've done 50% more damage with unbreakable strength o have some kind of ability, after all you end up focusing anyway
I destroyed him once, now he is destroying me entirely at pantheon :(
