The P8 and P8A1 can in fact be carried cocked and locked. the firing mechanism is completely compatible with the typical USP set up so you can reverse the control lever into any USP variant you want and the CIP over N isn’t just for Europe, its a new standardized proof mark that was instituted by Belgium for the rest of the world apart from the US and this change took effect from 2014 to 2015 or so, so all new HK guns made in germany after that time frame will have this instead of the old Bundlesadler Nitro, (Eagle over N).
Great video on civil/export P8A1. Safety goes back to P1 manual of arms, the rifling is mix of sticking with the P1-profil and a general cost-cutting approach in the Bundeswehr modernization package of '96 - apparently the rifled P8 barrels been the cheaper option to classic HK polygon. Some of the old P8 just fractured after 15-20k of MEN 9x19 NATO spec and TL spec was around 25k+ IIRC. Bugs with the P8 were the slides, the low light visibility of the sights, corrosion of pins and metall surfaces once the coating was gone. So the next batch had to be updated to A1 configuration... Bundeswehr did the hardcore R&D for HK and then paid for the fixes sort off, now the same development are observable with US ARMY and SIG. Back to the P8, my person guess is tha HK was calculating with the aftersales from the reduced service life and an across benefits of selling Bunderwehr rifle cut barrels to the public - that went south twofold, thus the rising price for the pistols. Plus the fan boy factor that comes with HK products.
Got one pretty recently and converted it to LEM, all components will interchange by the way. One thing to note to whoever else try’s this, it’s is 100% like a old school USP and therefore still has the older style catch design.
The reason why the German Armed Forces chose a barrel with lands and grooves is that the weapon was tested and selected before Heckler & Koch switched to polygon barrels. The request was for a manual safety where the lever automatically returned to the ‚Safe‘ position after decocking. The easiest way was to turn around the ‚Safe‘ and ‚Fire‘ positions on the decocking lever to fulfill that request. The pistol is carried in the so-called "schnelle Feuerbereitschaft" (quick fire readiness) uncocked and unlocked (lever on F).
Also,the controls were requested to be like those of the P1...Hell would probably freeze if the average german soldier has to use a different lever or angle on the pistol grip...
@@NashmanNash What you write is a widespread misconception. That was not the reason, but as I wrote above, the requirement that the weapon is in the safe position after decocking. The way the USP safety is designed, the chosen solution is the simplest realisation of this requirement.

The CIP/N is the new normal proof stamp which replaces the normal Eagle proof stamp since Oct 2014 in Germany. BH tells you in which year the weapon was stamped. B=1 and H=4 so it is the year 2014 The antler stamp tells you where the weapon was stamped. The antler stamp stands for Beschussamt Ulm or Proof house Ulm DE stands for Deutschland / Germany On Bundeswehr issued weapons there are a additional stamp on the weapons. Thanks! We used the V3 (I think) at work. Could decock, no safe position on the lever. Greatly prefer that over this. But we got rid of those USP 40's. Expect them to hit the market soon.
They are wonderful firearms. I wish they just remade it with an optics cut and pic rail. Blah blah p30, i know but that gun just never "did it" for me.
Bottom line...What cut type of barrel is better and Why? How many MIM parts are in H&K pistols? I don't drive an American car. I want my gun to last. I will pay the price and import tax for a gun that lasts and has "no" MIM parts. MIM in guns ( your life depends on it. My life has depended on my guns on and off-duty). Worked with the P8 during my service time in the Bundeswehr...I liked it...was a good gun to use.

My P2000 40 has the CIP/N slide markings, it’s definitely a US spec.
You said you can’t carry it cocked and locked, but when you showed us the decocker it was on safe with the hammer and trigger back…….
I can confirm it allows cocked and locked carry. Picked mine up from FFL today.

The p8 is the desirable one. More logical. When you decock, you’re automatically on safe. That’s how they all should be.

basically proof loads. SAAMI max is 35k psi, this gun shoots 43.5k nominal, so it is at least 25% over pressure.
Take a look at the barrel, you missed a new feature there.
