  • My Contax T2 60th Anniversary is by far one of my favourite 35mm film cameras despite the price tag! In this episode of Film Photography Friday I talk about why I bought it, why I love using it and showed off some results while shooting Kodak Colorplus 200.

    Lovely video. I'm so lucky to say I'm one of those people who got it for cheap before they were really big haha. I got it about 3 years ago for 160 USD.

      It surely is, while the price is high I feel it's worth it. I'm currently looking for a second one just in case the prices rise more. One of my next videos is going to be on shooting this with Kodak Gold

    I wish I had acted on this earlier.. I recall before they were sooo sought after...now it's wayyyy beyond what I will pay. I am fortunate to own its Yashica cousins the T4 /5 Like you mentioned, I too have way tooo many cameras. I used the T4 2.8 almost exclusively for family outings...I have so many other less automatic cameras that this let me P&S and with the "family" situation it was great. Saw myself as you waxed on your love of this camera. Glad you got the special 60th year edition with the box...very cool!!

    I had the jet black version and figured it'd only go up in value but that was only until the manual focus got out of whack and shortly after the circuit board got smoked. You could salvage a regular model but it would be a very expensive repair. I'll stick with all mechanical collector items for now. Nice lens on it though.

      Ah that's a pity, I currently have 4 of these and thankfully they're all very new with hardly any rolls through them. I love using them but I always know there's a risk

    I have and also love my T2. For those who have expressed here their lust to acquire one, IMO the T2 is a bad value at current prices. If you want an excellent camera of similar sort, consider the Konica Hexar AF. It's technical features are more useful and its lens is better than the T2 or my other suggestion, the Nikon 35Ti. (I bought a Nikon 35Ti at the same time as Contax T2 and tried both. I sold off the Nikon because I didn't like it's "retro" dials, its impossible - for me - button controls, and an idiotically complex menu system to select its endless feature options.) Both Hexar and Nikon are also rising in price, but are still much less costly than the Contax. If I tripped over a really minty Hexar AF with the "silent motor advance" option, I'd consider selling my T2 to buy it and pocket several hundred dollars as well. Unhappily, such a Hexar is even harder to fine.

      I actually got a great condition hexar af which is in the post on the way to me now so as soon as that arrives I'll put out a video about it!

    What is the best? Contax G1 or T2?

    • @Fjalll
      @Fjalll 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The T2 focusing mechanism is rather fragile. It broke on two of my T2s. Better yet get a beat up Leica M instead.

      I'd love to but I've bought two and each has had an issue where the ribbon cable to the lens has broken bricking the camera! Hopefully I'll have a working one at some stage soon!

    i find it misses focus a lot

    • @AaronFleming
      @AaronFleming  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really from my experience, I find it pretty much nails it every time, the only time I have however found it to miss was when shooting through glass it focused on where the glass was and not what was beyond it. In terms of autofocus this is one of my favourite, even beats my canon Eos and Minolta AF film SLRs

    • @AaronFleming
      @AaronFleming  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      For example since shooting this video I shot another two rolls of Kodak Gold with it and of those 72 shots it only missed focus once. My camera that I use for commercial work which is a Sony A7RIII even has a greater missed focus rate than 1/72. The difference there though is if that misses I can spot it and retake the shot 😊 Bare in mind though I'm shooting it with iso 200 film and in ok to good light and only rarely in dark conditions with flash so that could be why I'm getting such good results

    • @slinkyjohnny
      @slinkyjohnny 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      in low light it does miss focus a hell of a lot but in good lighting conditions it rocks

    • @randallstewart175
      @randallstewart175 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Total nonsense. The T2 uses a projected infrared light beam reflected back to the camera to measure focus distance. It will focus in any light, including none at all. It does have a fairly small focus spot which must used with care , and if close focused, take care to use the indicated close focus spot adjustment. This is where reading the camera manual before use pays off,... anyone ???

  • @JBubbs
    @JBubbs 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    T2 is a beauty and great piece of industrial design. Not perfect in terms of photographic ability, T3 is definitely better but for whatever reason Contax choose to strip it from character, and it's just plainly ugly. But investing in point and shoots is like sitting on a ticking bomb. They will hold and grow its value but only to the moment they decide to get bricked, and usually in a way when You at least need a donor's spare parts to repair them. High end mechanical or mostly mechanical cameras, especially medium format and good manual lenses are much safer investment option (slower value growth, less speculation but much better repairablity).
