Learning about his horrible crash during road bike party 2's shooting made me incredibly sad. It's great that he can keep his head up despite such a life changing accident. You really are an inspiration man.😭
BR Evan it was during a stunt display, not a race. It was during the period that this was being filmed though. Hence the reason Chris and Danny finished the film for him....
Martyn has always been one of my heroes and its a testament to him as a performer that his life-changing injury occurred when he was making his fans happy. I once spoke to him during an event when the equipment had been soaked by rain and asked if it would be too dangerous to perform. He just shrugged and said "you've all come to see me today, so what's my excuse?" Such a great man and a true inspiration.
I watch this video multiple times a year. This time I showed my 3-yo daughter, who just got her first toy gravel bike. Now our living room is an obstacle course and she’s making it do flips. This video is a gift to the world, thank you :)
Martyn, you are an inspiration. I showed this video to members of my cycling club at a meeting about a year ago and they were awe struck. Lee told me of your accident. You are a man who lived his life to the maximum and to a level that most of us mere mortals can only dream of. I wish you well for your recovery. Continue to inspire...Nick
I only knew him from GMBN. But this blows my mind and brings tears to a grown man's eyes. "I was born here and I'll die here". Keep up the good work Martyn!
***** And that would apply to ANY used bike then... Cause triple butted road steel frames are made to be light, not to be abused, and would crack the same way if abused like we can see here, lolz
***** on the contrary. Carbon fibre reinforced plastics (the proper term for carbon used in bikes) is not tough, but very BRITTLE. Look up the engineering definition for tough. The layperson describes it as "tough" pervading to the ability to "take a lot of damage" however, inherently, carbon structures damage much differently to metallic structures, i.e. they do not dent or chip, but simply fracture.
I just watched this vid at 5:06AM on April 01 and I thought the same thing. Usually when I watch reallllllly good videos I ask myself "How can I sum this up in one word?", I agreed on "Legend". Scroll down, and I seen the same!
This is still the best bit of road bike footage ever put together... More than 40 years ago I was racing BMX, doing well, raced MTB XC, DH & endurance events and tris and road bikes too. Over that time I can't imagine how many bikes I've owned let alone hours in the saddle. Suffice to say I know a bit about bikes. But this - even 5 years later and countless times watching - still just blows my mind... Inspired riding, redefining the possible, and really well shot & edited. Best road bike clip ever.
Very inspiring vid……really distills the freedom a bike can give an individual which is lost in these days with all these race bikes and tour de france hype.
Watching this makes me so sad 😢 to be this amazing, to love biking so much and end up in wheelchair is such injustice! But when you see how positive he is makes him even greater legend!
Yep. I first stumbled on this video when it was first released and followed him ever since. I can still remember scrolling Facebook one day and had his page pop up in my feed announcing he had had an accident. I was gutted. His riding style. (be far far superior) was similar to mine. The cycling community was robbed.
Life altering accidents like this actually happens more on dirt bikers, But most of them after getting paralyzed just shut themselves in the dark and we never heard of anymore. Martyn has an extremely positive different view thats why after all this he can still smile and ride an E-bike.
+MANUakaSHUFFY WD-40 is a good lubricant for rusty hinges and joints but has degreasing properties and will evaporate over time. The last two are very bad for bearings under load, the same type of bearings used for bicycles.
Get in a low gear, go slow, then pedal and shift your weight back. Start with the pedals straight up and down, or slightly off from that position so you can have maximum pedal travel for that first most important push.
I remember back in the day when it was the two Martins (excuse the spelling) and they rode for Cannondale. They performed similar stunts on mountain bikes which were way stronger than a Dogma2 and actually designed to be thrown about. The precision and deft of touch in this video shows the amazing skill that Martyn has. I didn’t say had there because he still has that skill and it’s only his current status that stops him from displaying it. The incident that ‘put a stick in his spokes’ certainly would have been hard to deal with but this guy just won’t be beaten. Gets a bike fitted with a tailor made saddle and starts hitting the downhill courses. What a Legend !!! You’re an inspiration Martyn 👍🏻
It does state at start "Warning: Advised some of the following scenes should not be attempted". Can you please advise which ones can be attempted then?
True, but he's not done. Still riding better that I can, and without the use of legs!!! He's my daily inspiration- we are not judged by what happens to us; rather we are judged by how we respond to what happens to us. Check out his new videos!
I know it's a carbon fibre frame. I ride aluminium because I can't afford carbon. Is that a lot stronger though? Would Aluminium get damaged if I took my road bike onto a canal tow-path?
Ian Cameron Yeah carbon is a butt load of money. Im riding a steel fixed gear frame and Im trying to find a good aluminum frame. Ive seen testing done with carbon vs. steel and the carbon held up 5x stronger. The only difference is, where steel and aluminum bend, carbon SNAPS and breaks BUT it takes a hell of alot more force to break carbon fiber. Some people think just because carbon breaks as opposed to bends, that it is weaker, that is far from the truth. I think your frame should be OK but I would worry about your rims. This guy Martyn seems like he has a very good control of his balance and shifts his weight perfectly. You should be ok as long as you take it easy...lol After watching this video, I think we all think we can conquer the world! very inspiring! Good luck m8!
Ian Cameron Carbon Fiber is pretty strong, but if you get into a pretty bad crash, it snaps in half. Thing happened to my road bike, but luckily, there are places to get them repaired. I would only recommend using a carbon frame if you're racing. For training, I would switch to a lightweight Aluminum frame, or a steel frame if that's how you roll.
He didn't ruin the bike, watch the out take video. All he did was pop one tire, scratch his brake lever, and chip the paint off his fork a tiny bit. im amazed how well a carbon road bike held up to that kind of riding
Dang, this video makes me wanna fly across half of the world and sleep in front of your door, begging to be accepted as a student (like in old kung fu movies :) This is one of the things I feel I have to do in Life, strangely it makes so much sense. I just need someone to give me the initials boost. Well done!
honestly the riding is crazy but the editing is what really makes it- it kinda feels like he just took out his bike one day and went on a tour, like it's one continuous ride
Actually, the thing that damages and destroys your bike is water, not dirt. Liberally spray wd40 everywhere on metal surfaces, ignore the dust that sticks - it will be gone the instant you wash it and what is underneath is clean and pristine. Always blow dry with compressed air. My bikes last 10 times longer than anybody's bike, and it is the protective film that i constantly renew that is a big part of the reason.
Great video, but completely ruined by the greasing ladies at the end. What exactly was the relevance? Martyn's prowess is so good that he has ladies queuing up to polish his down-tube with lubricating products? Err...
I loved the video Mart! I will never get angry with myself or at my bikes, the dirt jump and the dh one,I knew already that it has to do with the biker skills for the most part and not the bike itself, but it's always amzing to have such reminders like your videos. Much respect 2 you Martyn Ashton, from a Portuguese downhiller immigrant in Holland.
I remember seeing this back in the day, but in my ignorance had no idea who Martyn was at the time and what a legend he already was. Roll forward the clock, and today I love the GMBN crew. They're such a fantastic and inspirational group of riders.

Martyn is a spirit that refuses to quit. While it is wishful of me to hope that he will be back to 100%, he has not let his accident slow him down. Always an inspiration, and always in our hearts!
This is a clear demonstration of the awesome durability of the road bike being pushed to its limits. A complement to the bicycle brand / parts industry.
I'm sitting here thinking I need to find some special bike for my rough bumpy and cracked sidewalk commutes and then I see this guy doing amazing stuff on a road bike. So the truth is I just need to develop some skills to hop over and bounce off of stuff on a road bike, and feel in tune with it. It's exciting to think about, thanks for this! 🙏
Yo that moment @2:56 when they make the music sound like it's underwater for a split second.... THAT is great attention to detail. What a fantastic edit! Oh the riding is good, too :p
10 years later and this is still one of the best bike videos on this site!
Absolutely 😍😍😍😍
for cars, there are Aston Martins, but for bikes, there is Martyn Ashton :O
Chris P good joke 😂😂
Yeh
There is an Aston Martin bike
but should be Martyn Ashton bikes! )))
so he shouldn't own a brand?
Still one of the best bike videos ever 🙌🏻
The best🚴♀️😊

Respect for Martyn Ashton, his spirit inspire millions of people.

Barney Clifton He had a bad accident a few years back now and is paralysed from the waist down but that don't stop him from getting back on a bike :)
true, with that song it feels like a reminiscence of his primes :'(
It's so sad isn't it.

WD40!?! Craziest stunt in the entire film

ji19103 I have no issue with them using it the frame itself.
Who are the 1000+ people that disliked this epic video? They should be lit on fire.
They don't like road bike at all or the don't like tight clothes xD
it's probably tight ass mechanics that saw wd40 being sprayed on a bike
They don't even know how to ride
