I personally think Benjamin Hastings has been the most importent, inspiring & creative songwriter in the worship vein for the last 5 years. Such a breath of fresh air.
Joel Houston as a way with words that no one else has I think! He is one of the greatest song writer in the music worl- mainstream/secular and Christian contemporary music! Insane guy!
My favorite moment was when Reckless love and So Will I both where going for same dove award, and you realize the lord is in control. We are waiting for some new songs
Great question about balancing writing songs of struggle/darkness. I feel often collectively believers could be more vulnerable and authentic to everything isn’t going so great and things can be hard pressed… There is an opportunity for that vulnerability to be released in worship too. Perhaps it would open up the floodgates in a new way allowing people to really be authentic in their struggle. I personally feel more engaged and free in worship when a song hits my core - it’s like permission to let the guard down and just be what I need to be in that moment with the Lord. Following a song like that with one of the Lord’s goodness, faithfullness or love is sorta like a fullness we all want to experience, right? I just wrote a few songs similar in context of the waiting, preparation, transition seasons and so on.. all fairly trying areas of growth we all endure. Anyhoo, just my thoughts. Really fantastic panel discussion, thank you!
If I would get to talk with Joel id ask him if he purposely and actively tries to avoid to fall back on what worked for older songs. In doing so, wouldn't you fall down on the other side of the horse while trying to mount it? To not beat around the bush here I have "Oceans" in mind or rather its bridge.

It sounds like bringing out from what is within and poring out the meaning of the word in song by the 🕊
Gifted wisdom and educated God fearing creation.
I got a chance to sit in the room this day right at the front. There was such humility but wisdom in the room!
