Sir Robin and I passed eachother on the jetty in Portsmouth in 2019. We greeted eachother and it was only when I saw Sauhaili tied to the jetty a bit further on that I realised I had just said good evening to a childhood hero. I read about the Crowhurst story when I was a teenager. Have been sailing myself since 1973, the year my current Dufour 35 was built.
Yes he certainly is. Sad how the Sunday Times continued their disrespect and loathing for sailors and sailing after the 1968 race. Sir Robin donated his prize money to the Crowhurst family and they were so afraid of backlash from Sir Robin, they awarded him the trophy in a private ceremony! Inexcusable of them!
This guy seems like a gem. He won the golden globe race and donated the prize money to Donald’s family. He didn’t even have to do that. So kind, especially after Donald’s family suffered a tragic loss that remains unresolved.
For a year, I have wondered why the 50tieth anniversary of this historic and epic race was not held/hosted in Falmouth! So sad why the hero did not receive the respect and honor he deserved just because some media mogul did not have hald the values of Sir Robin. He is a gentleman, a hero and legend in his own right! Salute!
Class act - we need more people of his caliber in the word
