This is like having hot apple pie and ice cream together. Two of my favorite things in the world that just go so well together, RIP Alex Chilton and Elliott Smith.
He covers this song beautifully, his voice had an innocence to it which really suits this song, he is still missed, he had such a natural talent raw and filled with emotion.
I lost my older brother in 2014, who was a huge Elliott Smith fan, and we bonded over his music soon before his passing. I always go to his Music to remember him, it really helps get some emotion out sometimes.
Elliott does such a great job with this song, and completely makes it his own. His composition of the bridge makes his guitar sound like it is crying. So beautiful.
I honestly thought he did write it til I came across Big Star one day & was shocked. Can see why he covered them, also a great band to get into if you never heard of em.
Thinking of Elliot and Alex Chilton together makes for a sad connection. Poor Alex died of a heart attack and he didn’t even have health insurance. Sometimes people will all the talent in the world never make it big. As for Elliot... I just can’t, even after all this time I just can’t put into words how heartbreaking it is for him to have left us so early.
And Chris Bell left us even earlier - he was only 27 when his car skidded, crashed and killed him. I think he was buried the next day, which was Alex Chilton’s birthday! As much as I love Bell’s beautiful, aching singing on “Thirteen,” I always thought this was a better fit for Elliott. His quiet, whispery vocals and complete vulnerability make this a perfect piece for him.

Elliott has been my inspiration for the last 10 years. I heard his music when I was done with life. I wanted nothing more than to just leave... I got close, but found his amazing voice, lyrics and guitar. Thank you for saving me, Elliott. RIP. Welcome 13 reasons why fans. For such a sad scene, I was so glad to hear Elliott's beautiful cover on there.
I've been playing guitar since 12 and I'm 26 now I am in the process of learning the song and dammit I don't know why I find it so fucking hard to learn but it's such a good song
PinkDevilFish+ This is the key! I've started playing pretty much daily the last few years (sometimes just going over the same go-to scales and songs I've played for ~12 years), and have been blown away at the amount of progress in my overall dexterity and muscle memory. I threw some basic Travis Picking exercises into my regular practice routine a year or so ago, and now feel like I can play just about ANY picking pattern I come across. My fingers just kinda figure it out haha. I just recently learned "Everything Reminds Me of Her" and "Somebody That I Used To Know" in about 2-3 days. Even just a little bit of consistent practice goes a long way!

+leonard byrne Hey man! It took interest and research and a lot of listening on my part to figure that out. Makes Big Star all that more enigmatic, ha! Peace!
Unbelievable tragedies to lose both Elliot Smith and Jeff Buckley, two of the most profilic voices that God ever gifted. It saddens me to hear them, yet the most happy if that make sense. Keep on keeping on. 🎶🙏
I’ve watched this many times and only just appreciated his double take back at the poster to get that rock n roll pose correctly. I’m trying to learn the song but I can’t sing at all. It’s...frustrating. I also can’t play that well.
I haven't played this one myself in awhile and I don't post my own music vids online anymore (my original channel was taken down like 10 years ago). I would recommend singing it like your trying to sing it out loud but someone in the next room is sleeping so you have to whisper-sing it.
RIP you poor little boy on heroin, you were so misunderstood and mistreated, I wish you had only been given the love that would have saved your life. OMG love you so much
He was very loved by many, many people, both those close to him, and all his fans. They tried incredibly hard to get him off drugs. It wasn't others who could have saved him; he needed to open his fucking eyes and save himself.
Umm...he didn't die from drugs and it was the opposite. Elliot Smith was not on anything other than meds prescribed by doc and all were at thereputic level so bit your tongue.
@@cabana85 Just being nitpicky on a comment from 2 years ago, but at the time of Needle in the hay, and his self-titled album, Elliott hadn't been on heroin. He started using heroin and crack in late 2000.
Elliott was a gift from another planet....he was more talented that we even realize...and so missed
Very missed. 💔
^♥️
More talented than he even realized tbh

Rip Chris Bell too!
This song...brings me to tears...everytime
RIP Chris Bell.

Yes one of my fav covers
It’s the year 2020, my little brother died in 2013, but every year it hurts the same. Eliot smith lets me cry.
Sorry for your loss bro, keep hanging in there strong for him

We are strung together in our shared grief
I'm sorry, I hope you are doing ok in life. God Bless
@ thank you

Elliott was born to play this classic Big Star tune...
The vulnerability and gentleness in his voice is just so endearing. God, i miss Elliott.
Elliott does such a great job with this song, and completely makes it his own. His composition of the bridge makes his guitar sound like it is crying. So beautiful.
just his voice breaks me, what a wonderful person
This song could’ve been written by Smith. It’s perfect for his voice and perfect for his style. Magical.
I honestly thought he did write it til I came across Big Star one day & was shocked.

Nah this song is pure Alex Chilton, as much as I adore and revere Smith
Big Star was so clearly influential on Smith.
Just want to say....my heart is heartbroken. SO beautiful. Thank you Elliott. I know Alex appreciates your tribute.

Yeah no doubt. I was 11 when this came out (Big Star). I was like..wow…wait..what’s happening to me.
