Hey all, this video was a bit tricky to make as while I played ONRUSH and DiRT 5, I have not played GRID 2019 or GRID Legends. So the footage I used in the video was from IsuckAtDriving, and I looked at reviews, and discussions of those games from fans to get a general feeling about how they felt, since I did not have first hand experience like I did for ONRUSH and DiRT 5. I hope I covered the GRID games in a manner many fans can agree with! Regardless, enjoy the video, and let me know your opinions and thoughts in the comments!
look, codemasters now divides their games in sim games and arcade games, on rush was too arcade, dirt 5 is perfect except for the bugs and shows that its what they are doing, F1 and new WRC are going well, dirt 5 should go better IMO and they just need to learn how to make arcade games, still everyone expected dirt 5 to be realistic while dirt always was arcade, and dirt rally more realistic
Codemasters is honestly doing just fine. Its very clear that whenever they release a sim/simcade title like F1, it does really well, but when they try to release an arcade racing title, the interest just isnt there for the majority of the racing audience. This is really sad imo, but its just the reality arcade racing fans have to live in. Its only going to get worse from here on unless an arcade racer has a cinderella story and rises to world class level popularity, bringing attention back to arcade racers.
If Codemasters was actually doing just fine they wouldn't have gone around buying up studios on the cheap in the hopes they'd turn a profit before selling out to EA. Onrush had zero marketing, I was active in the cm forums and didn't even know it launched. Grid 2019 got nothing but mediocre reviews from everyone. Dirt 4 was also actually a flop, trying to appease sim and arcade, doing neither, while having less content and the poorly implemented random stages. Dirt 5 has the same bad heavy yet floaty "arcade" physics of every other mediocre arcade title now. I don't think there's no interest for these games, code masters has just dropped the ball on all of them
@@JZStudiosonline yea Im starting to see that. I guess F1 is the only real exception and the rest of their games seem to not do nearly as well. I didnt know about the buying studios but I agree with you on that now that I know about it. I still feel like arcade racers have steadily lost their appeal to racing fans, but that could like you said just be because theyre just messing them up.
It's not that Codemasters' playerbase is not interested in arcade racing games. The problem is that Grid 2019 is average at best, Dirt5 sucks hard and Grid:Legends (even though much better than Grid 2019) still suffers from simplified (awful) damage and suspension models. They drive almost always with fully extended suspensions and are unresponsive and unstable over bumps. Simplified collisions and lack of proper deformation make crashes unpredictable and "bouncy". What annoys me is fact that they had it figured out when original Racedriver:Grid launched. Also it doesn't help that cars are slower on straights and much grippier in corners than IRL which makes for less intense driving experience. I just don't get why they won't give us proper successor to RaceDriver:Grid or CMR Dirt2. Since these 2 titles their arcade line of games is only getting worse (although I have to admit that Grid Legends might be begining of a change).
I thought OnRush was quite fun. Had they floored the brake pedal with the microtransactions, given the game a better marketing (or even a more interesting artstyle overall), added a proper race mode, and released the game on PC day one with crossplay it could've stood a chance as a fun little arcade racer that could scratch the itch for more Motorstorm. Nowadays it's nigh impossible to find a decently packed lobby on Xbox.
I would've play OnRush on PC since there's not many pure arcade racer where I can ride an off-road bike on a long course. There's only MX vs ATV Legends and Dakar18 for the semi-high profile, decent games (and The Crew series but we don't talk about those).
As I’ve played GRID Legends, I feel like it’s finally a return to form since GRID Autosport. The lack of marketing is its problem, but I feel like I know that they can still make good (and even great) games today. So I don’t feel like they’re doomed. Keep in mind that F1 and DiRT Rally target a different audience. F1 is giant right now and so is simracing with DiRT Rally. Those markets are much larger than those who want an arcade track racer (GRID) or arcade rally game (DiRT).
Yea it's not necessarily that I feel like they are doomed, as I mentioned in the end of the video, but these failures definitely aren't going to help them in the eyes of EA. Also, I do realize the player base will be bigger for DiRT Rally and F1. While I don't expect GRID or DiRT to be able to match those numbers, that section was more so to highlight how bad those games did in the grand scheme of things. If those numbers were closer to those of DiRT Rally and F1, then I probably wouldn't have even made this video. Since they are so far off, I think it's pretty telling about Codemasters' overall performance recently.
Grid legends is a good game...it just got released at the wrong time...just when gt7 was being released....and then it was a matter if personal taste .. more sim or more arcade...as it stands grid legends is not a bad game at all...

About Grid Legends - absolutely step in the right direction BUT it still ain't even close to the original in quality. Suspension model is oversimplified and sucks, cars are slower on straights than IRL which conflictsnwith insane amount of grip they have and damage model is huge downgrade from first Grid and Dirt games. Story mode was decent idea executed badly. It has its moments but overall lacks quality and often falls into laughably bad territory. I'd prefer them to use these resources somewhere else.
You should really cover the MotorStorm Series, some great games with great ambitions. Sadly, the series died as its last game( not counting the RC game) MotorStorm: Apocalypse did not sell well due to unfortunate events which delayed its release.
i miss when Codemasters was at its golden days, GRID 1, DiRT 2, the TOCA games. Now only F1 games and DiRT rally are the only good games they make. I think the new NFS will tremendously fail. Totally the wrong concept and vision. Its a game for kids, not for car enthusiasts. CarX Street will be the NFS everybody was asking for.
I think codemasters should release fewer games but make each one higher quality. Dirt rally 2.0 was great and i think that style of games is what they should focus on.
I found the driving ganeplay of both grid 2019 and legends to be very boring. I was excited for legends as they had ai driver errors resulting in crashes but I never felt they occurred enough and when it did, it was never near me so there wasn't really alot of tension.
I didn't mind Dirt 5 at all to be honest. Yes the physics had their wonky moments (especially Gymkhana) but it was a fun offroader. The graphics especially were gorgeous despite the strong saturation of colors. I have Dirt Rally 2.0 and a wheel to satisfy the pure rally experience... As for GRID, I've had a lot of fun with both 2019 and Legends online. I don't have a PS5 so GT is out of the question (and GT itself has strayed more and more into a proper sim title) and Forza Motorsport is still a long way away. So Legends fills a nice gap of a quick jump-in circuit racer. Still has some bugs but it is a solid title. Crossplay is the best part...it definitely helped fill the overall playerbase. Racing games in general are in a strange place right now. What really notable title has come out well received outside of flagship titles like GT/Forza? Even NFS, a proper household name, has struggled. Racing sims are doing okay but outside of that...Wreckfest is great...The Crew 2 not so much. BeamNG is popular but its hardly a racing game. The quality and longevity of the flagship titles has become very high. GRID Legends has a great car list compared to any racing game in the past 20 years... but it's tiny compared to GT or Forza.
The things I would do to have a motorstorm-like game on PC, yet the only closest thing so far is just running the game through a hefty emulator if you don't have a powerful enough CPU.
Agreed on all points, most racing games these days are mid or worse. Will admit that Legends was horrific as it’s predecessors like 2019 it still hasn’t hit its peak of “race driver”.
It never was a good sign that I could buy there games 5 months after release for under 10 bucks on keys sites. And I mean for every Grid title this was the case. They make really good games. I have personally played Onrush... it's a team combat forced online mode service game that while you can play offline, you only simulate playing the online mode in offline and it's an almost experience just advertising to the user to go online... the game is USELESS as a game that claims to be an "arcade racer" because if a game like this had actually showed up in an actual arcade, it would have been ripped apart by people refusing to play it.
Graphics and some gameplay is ok but they should have stayed at Sony and just handled Remakes of the MotorStorm PS2 and PS3 games while fixing some of the issues in MotorStorm in the REMAKEs and making sure there was an actual single player and local coop mode like PS3 Ridge Racer 7.
It's solid in terms of gameplay and overall polish. That's what I meant by that.
now i know why i love Dirt 5... it's arcadey!
Codemasters is incapable of change unless it is for the worse, anyone who's played dirt rally knows this
Grid Legends was pretty decent tho
Dirt Rally 2.0 is their last good game
Come on, codemasters! Just make a Motorstorm spiritual successor already!
People will say that it's onrush but any motorstorm fan would 100% call it's bluff on being its successor
@@shawklan27 Onrush is a decent game, but it's no Motorstorm. It didn't come close to the masterpiece that is Motorstorm Pacific Rift.
@@thebrodator I like MS Apocalypse

@@thebrodator The new NFS will probably fail by the looks of dev build gameplay, so let's hope we will get MS or Burnout (Criterion is working on NFS now)
Never heard of Onrush and never got the message that GRID and GRID Legends are different games 🤣
Codemasters are gonna fuck up the next game like the rest
