  • In this video, we are exploring the abandoned Station Hotel located in Ayr, Scotland. The building is decaying dangerously near very public areas, so has been covered with protective scaffolding. Everything remains inside in an untouched state!

So happy that I stumbled across this video. I live down in Derby England, but I met and fell in love with a beautiful Ayrshire lassie around 20 years ago. It sadly didn't work out, but we're still very close and I still come up here regularly to visit her and my daughter. It's just another place on the long list of magnificent Victorian buildings which has been allowed to rot. There's one in my home town - an incredible, ornate warehouse built by the Great Northern Railway in the 19th century. I've watched it stand empty for 25 years, gradually deteriorating, falling apart, and being vandalised and covered in graffiti. Deep in my heart, I just know that this structure will eventually be bulldozed. And yes - I still feel the same way about her to this very day. My dream girl, she always was - and she always will be. Thanks for posting.

I have so many fond memories of holidaying in Ayr in the late 80's and early 90s as a child and we always stayed at the Station Hotel. I can even point out where my family sat in the restaurant and bars, in your video. I loved Ayr as a child and the Odeon opposite brings back so many fond memories. You are two brave guys. I came to this from your video of your walk round the Ambassador in Blackpool, which after being closed for many years is now being demolished. I worked in the West of Scotland for a few months in 2017. The Station Hotel was closed then but it hadn't got to the stage where it has been covered in a sheet to prevent further water penetration and serious damage to the fabric of the building, which might result in it suffering the same fate as the Ambassador.

Back in 2004 some work colleagues were staying in it and the ceilings were collapsing back then, one was moved rooms twice due to parts of the ceiling collapsing in the room and then water running down the walls. The place stank of damp. It’s not had any significant repairs since then. Nobody who’s owned it has wanted to pay out for the restoration as repairs it needed. Now it’s just there rotting away, closing half the railway station and disrupting traffic.
Think part of the roof was damaged in a fire, probably where all that water damage is.

In a perfect world homeless people could use abandoned buildings without doing any damage inside. Unfortunately many of homeless people are alcohol/drug addicts. One person usually will not do any trouble, but few or more people could be problematic (using open fire to cook while being intoxicated, fights between people). From time to time you can hear about fire in an abandoned building, especially during winter when homeless people are getting off the streets and looking a place to stay.
Fortunately there are homeles shelters which help them to survive winter, find a job, quit addiction etc.

South Ayrshire Council knew what he was doing but didn't care. There to blame for this beautiful building going to ruin!!! I was never paid properly, he never paid the brewery or the linen companies. He even tried to get the staff to stay overnight especially the younger girls like me so I can only imagine what was going on. No way would i!! Rayan had a partner in London who would watch with cameras to what was going on and because they were Muslim, Rayan's partner refused to pay for any money to go towards alcohol. A disgrace that SAC knew what was happening and done nothing.

Very sad to see it in this state. Used the Playdrome regularly, the Gym, Pool, Sports Hall and the Indoor Bowling Club. Replaced by a new Leisure Centre with fewer facilities (eg no more indoor bowling and a much smaller pool). Playdrome has now been demolished and the site cleared.

Honestly, it's sad seeing the decline of many buildings throughout Ayr over the years. This one has a small place in my heart and seeing the inside of it like that, made my heart sink. I do hope that something can be done with this building, as I can't imagine Ayr without it.

I grew up in Irvine from the late 70s and left Scotland about a decade ago. Ayr was always the "posher" part of where I visited and seeing what it's become now is heartbreaking. It's essentially a slum. The high street is essentially a wasteground. Nothing left. Really sad to see.

So sad to see the condition that the building has been left to rot to. Someone should be held accountable for the state that great building has been allowed to deteriorate to. I’ve previously worked with people who are homeless and have heard well meaning arguments for allowing the homeless community to stay in such buildings. However, it’s always a question of liability, if something tragic happens to someone staying who would be to blame? So to overcome this would need costly maintenance being carried out and some kind of management. It would cost less to invest in providing homelessness support services to help get people off the streets and living independently.

    • @nicolapdn.2926

I grew up in Ayr and have watched the heart being gradually ripped out of it. Do they want to create another Irvine ? I was stunned when the Market Inn was saved 20 years ago! they wanted to demolish it so badly. Remember the County Hospital? another beautiful building gone... Oh look! more flats. No doubt the Station Hotel will continue rotting until it's demolished for 'safety reasons' or until it 'accidentally' goes on fire. Brown envelopes all round..... and the site becomes unattractive flats, just like the harbour. They must be absolutely dying to build sh*te on the low green ! Many, many brown envelopes....

But what purpose could such a building have today? Especially now it is so ruined.

Another crying shame, such a lovely building and a part of railway history. I'd heard from station staff that it was privately owned but that the railway operators had secured some sort of purchase order as the 'owners' had never responded to previous approaches 're it's condition, don't know if that's right or not. I'm sure he also told me that due to the dangerous condition of the building they could only risk having 2 trains in the station at a time cos any more than that would cause too much vibration and basically risk more of the building falling, again not 100% but I think that's what he said. Given what a busy line it is and such a great building I hope something is done to save it soon.
