Those PAK anti-tank guns were destroying your transports as they were going down that road, they were your greatest threat this game. I wonder if you could have infantry rushed the gun, it may have put you in an even better position. Otherwise, great game showcasing how it looks at this stage of development! Cheers!
Yeah that AT crew did more damage to quill than anything else in the game. They're not geared to fight infantry so just one of the two squads he had would've been more than enough, plus there was good cover in there.
worst way to find out what is "Wirbelwind" is to send planes to scout over them :) . But planes actualy did good against AA unit which isnt very good if we talk about balance of units.
I didn't expect to enjoy watching this battle as much as I did. The first part was sooooo full of technical stuff and nitty-gritty details I was kinda worried the battle itself wouldn't be fun to watch, but, man, was I wrong. This was a blast! Definitely hope to see more of this game once you've honed your skills and are going up against some higher-level AI, quill~
No, while Memoir '44 is great, it's not really a tabletop/miniature wargame. I'm thinking about something more like, say, Warhammer 40k, since that's probably the best-known example of the genre. You know, a game about pushing customized, painted miniatures around a map where every miniature has detailed stats about what kind of guns and equipment they have and many dice are rolled.
You lost like 4 vehicles to the anti tank gun on the road to the left. They all relied on the main road and got slaughterd. It was really painful to watch :D
I'm sure you are already learning this but the majority of leaders except the tanks are not meant to fight equivalent unit types one on one. A good use of infantry leaders are for the crowded building areas on maps surrounded by friendly infantry or supporting your long range artillery with experience.
Nice video, Quill! Hindsight being 20/20 though, you should have rotated his mortar crew to the center of your line, where you had those infantrymen that were out of range of the PAK, and could have sent it falling back a lot sooner, saving you men and equipment. Another move you could have made, was move up one of your M3's to fire on the PAK and have it fall back. Your own anti-tank gun could have then kept command of the road for any German tanks or armored vehicles, coming your way. But, all in all, you won, so your own tactics worked in the end.
It would be nice if the infantry could set up sandbags (maybe a Dig-in option) instead of relying on buildings so much for cover. Also, randomized commander builds would be nice to jump into a game quickly
I have to disagree with you there Quill and I think Sun Tzu said something to this effect. To "overkill" means that you are using to much resources than is needed for a task and you are thereby weakening your other fronts. And *over*analysing will lead to inaction (though in a game you can of course, simply pause), act instead of react kind of thing... Though I'm guessing you are kind of saying this a bit tongue-in-cheek :P
+moonquake x But he also talked alot about breaking moral, and "overkill" against the right spots can break moral rather fast, atleast in reality. and its not the best advice book for this game, why bother with using an ancient cryptic chinese book that covers war as a whole if you can use Achtung-Panzer as advice book. a book on who to fight with tanks in ww2 from the father of modern warfare.
Ok, I think you sold me. When I hear RTS I think Starcraft and that is way to hectic for me to truly enjoy. This looks a little more like a tabletop experience.
Korzik Age of empires, rise of nations, company of heros, world in conflict. lots of great not starcrafty rts games out there. the same devs making this made the wargame series. which is similar to this except with a more modern setting.
I love the way you asked "What is that?" as you moused over and it said Wirblewind and you said I'll attack it with P47's, I was like Noooooo. There AA! Awesome AA with quad 20's. How you got away with it I have no idea.
you should try combat Mission battle for Normandy. pretty similar type of game, though it's more of a tactics simulator rather than an RTS. anyway the best part about it is that a has a demo, so it's free to try.
Hey quill a bit random but do you remember aurora 4X? I really enjoyed that series and wouldn't mind you starting it again. Maybe not right now but just for some food for thought.
If you plan to keep the ground you have, doesn't it make sense to field all the units you can during phases a and b? I think of it like a more "traditional" rts's economy and you are not making workers/gatherers on purpose. HT stands for half track, an armored personnel carrier in most cases, though they tow ordnance as well. Speaking of which your ability to recognise the type and relative strength of various enemy units seems to be important here, a bit of study may go a long way.
"Flawless victory" and yet he let 5 infantry squads drive repeatedly to their deaths on the left haha. Great video though Quill! I enjoyed RUSE years ago, this looks interesting, I imagine I'll pick it up at some point.
Wargame is a fucking fatastic RTS, hopefully this can keep up the same quality and feel. Just a few tips that may or may not carry over from Wargame. Recon is absolute king. If they are in some cover and you don't have recon you will get destroyed everytime. Infantry can counter almost anything in the game so long as they can get in range. most of the game revolves around getting Inf to key positions with tank and arty support. Lastly, know your units and your deck. Using the proper unit for the correct job will net you so much efficiency that you can trounce people who mindlessly throw units at a problem. But also know your opponents units as well. When your AT suddenly cany damage that tank because it has to much armor is never a situation you want to be in, and you need to know how to respond
I can't believe it, you played as an American armored division and you didn't fire a single shot with a Sherman? Up the difficulty and play against the German armor division, let's get some proper tank battles going!
Did you send airplanes to destroy *AA Guns* and had your planes live? I swear the things I see some Let's Players get away with... Most of the times, when I make a similar mistake to some let's players, I end up in a spiral of bad luck and with the AI perfectly taking advantage of a one second gap in my judgement, and down goes the whole thing down the drain. Meanwhile, in Let's plays people forget about something for over two hours of recording and the AI never really gets around to exploiting that until they notice.
you could have said "wargame" with a WW2 setting and saved 1.5 videos :P the dynamic front is pretty awesome though instead of the strongpoints that made fights always in the same area's
¿Are you going to play Imperium Universalis? the mod for EU4 wich is focused in the ancient world of the greek and romans and the map is from spain to china.
Gaizokubanou It is basically shown in the Video. -Focus on Divisions, instead of whole armies - Phase system with different income rates for every division - frontline system instead of sectors to take - overall slower pace - maps are wide but not as deep, as in wargame - and some other things...
Hey Quill, I thought I'd try to help you out with some of the weapons and their ammo. For example, when you see 12.7 mm think .50 cal . . . be it the HMG's you see in WW2 movies or that modern Barrett .50 cal sniper we see so much in Hollywood and video games. Anything bigger than 12.7 is going to be a cannon or missile. Also, 7.62 can be a run of the mill rifle or a .30 cal Browning machine gun (think baby .50 cal HMG). That's really the only info you'd find useful, for everything else you can just look at the weapon portrait and straight up compare the numbers for any other info you may need. Let me know if you'd want to know any other specifics about anything else, i.e. cannons or tanks or whatever. Love the vids!
There was a similar game to this (besides RUSE) which was released few years ago but it had modern military stuff which i didn't liked, WWII feels much better while we are moving towards WWIII.
Next time you play a game where small soldiers shoot each other and mortars go off and it's full 3D there's a thing called "bullet time", you could - um - zoom a bit in and show what's happening. And when you give orders to guys, perhaps show how they work out? Entire video was you just going "ummmm i think I place it here" like fifty million times, and then scrolling to the other side of map where nothing interesting happened. Do you even care what happens?
Those PAK anti-tank guns were destroying your transports as they were going down that road, they were your greatest threat this game. I wonder if you could have infantry rushed the gun, it may have put you in an even better position. Otherwise, great game showcasing how it looks at this stage of development! Cheers!
Yeah that AT crew did more damage to quill than anything else in the game. They're not geared to fight infantry so just one of the two squads he had would've been more than enough, plus there was good cover in there.
"I wonder what that's shooting at?"
*AT Gun Strikes a transport as it drives off the road into a fiery explosion...*
*silence staring at the AT gun*
PAK 38 MVP, despite being worst german assault ever. :D
I was screaming at the screen the same thing. LOL
worst way to find out what is "Wirbelwind" is to send planes to scout over them :) . But planes actualy did good against AA unit which isnt very good if we talk about balance of units.
I didn't expect to enjoy watching this battle as much as I did. Definitely hope to see more of this game once you've honed your skills and are going up against some higher-level AI, quill~
33:40 They are not retreating, they are advancing in a different direction. Or, well, just the same direction. Whatever.
Advance to the rear!
Once again Quill, you're the king of explaining a new game for anyone considering buying it or not. keep up the good work!
Something about this game gives me a very strong tabletop-wargame vibe. I like it.
Memoir '44?
No, while Memoir '44 is great, it's not really a tabletop/miniature wargame. I'm thinking about something more like, say, Warhammer 40k, since that's probably the best-known example of the genre. You know, a game about pushing customized, painted miniatures around a map where every miniature has detailed stats about what kind of guns and equipment they have and many dice are rolled.
Flames of War is pretty much this but on tabletop. Basically WWII warhammer, but much less rock/paper/scissors, more real tactics.
Using P-47s to take out anti-aircraft guns. Bold.
please do more of this. seams like a good game and, as always, I like your way of presenting/playing it
So sad for their mothers when you send thunderbolts straight into wirbelwinds :D
quill18 @ 35:00: "Let me send two P-47s straight into the jaws of their AA force."
me: "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
:D
I would really enjoy seeing more of this game.
Quill, you lost more people than they had kills...
Maybe he sent the others off to do sudoku?
Such torture to force people to play puzzle games.
Did you miss the joke or ignore it for the sake of your own? LOL
Two months late, but it would be weirder more people were killed than were actually lost.
Wirbelwinds are AAA guns. I could tell that marking them for air strikes isn't gonna end well for you.
Are AAA guns even better than AA guns? :P
*scnr*
trible A is allways better ;)
AAA means anti air artillery
Alcoholic Anti Air?
Reiswaffel think of AAA as huge guns pointed at the sky. AA is big guns pointed at the sky.
You lost like 4 vehicles to the anti tank gun on the road to the left. They all relied on the main road and got slaughterd. It was really painful to watch :D
Great stuff. Game looks like a fun blast. I wish they would have pause and be able to give orders for us old folk.
this game mechanically feels extremely similar to R.U.S.E. minus the bases and actual ruse cards. That's a good thing imo.
love how Quill forgets a mortar team on the right side.
This was cool quill. Thanks. I would enjoy to see more!!
More of this please Quill! :D Really enjoyble, love it!
I really enjoyed watching this! Can't wait for the next time you play this
Yeah, send those Thunderbolts against two Wirbelwinds. See how that turns out.
I'd like to see you do more of these, Quill :)
You have sold so many Paradox games to me Quill... and this is another one. Thanks
I would love to see more of this, especially when they release the campaign. I'd love to see a possible run through.
Sooooo Glad you are playing this game! I hope you try some MP and can see you on the battlefield!!!
This game seems really cool. Thanks for showing it to me, captain
I'm sure you are already learning this but the majority of leaders except the tanks are not meant to fight equivalent unit types one on one. A good use of infantry leaders are for the crowded building areas on maps surrounded by friendly infantry or supporting your long range artillery with experience.
This looks better and feels more fun to play than Wargame series already. Wargame is overcomplicated.
Nice video, Quill! Hindsight being 20/20 though, you should have rotated his mortar crew to the center of your line, where you had those infantrymen that were out of range of the PAK, and could have sent it falling back a lot sooner, saving you men and equipment. I absolutely loved R.U.S.E., totally wanna pick this up now I've seen it running.
Farlen Brithire you might like wargame as well
I think I own two of the Wargame games but haven't really jumped into them yet, might give 'em a go.
Hopefully it's Red Dragon you own, as the AI is horrible in the two earlier games. This game is a WW2 version of wargame. It's really that simple.
33:39 We're falling back!!! So let's continue into the barrage of bullets!!
This game actually looks pretty good
Really enjoyed watching this! Hope there will be more videos, maybe on easy or normal.
Thank you sir for yet another great video! Outstandind job as always!!
1:35 could you say its.. all quite on the western front? ;)
Definitely would like to see more of this.
I liked the game and would like to see more of you playing it. Call Briarstone for a 1x1 best of 5.
I love how you overanalyze everything :)
There's no such thing as too much overkill, or too much overanalyzing.
Amen.
Sure there is such a thing as over analyzing, its called 'Arumba and his spreadsheets'
I have to disagree with you there Quill and I think Sun Tzu said something to this effect. To "overkill" means that you are using to much resources than is needed for a task and you are thereby weakening your other fronts. Love the Kelly's heros references in the audio:D
PLease do more of this series when possible!
I love the way you asked "What is that?" as you moused over and it said Wirblewind and you said I'll attack it with P47's, I was like Noooooo. There AA! Awesome AA with quad 20's. How you got away with it I have no idea.
I haven't ever yelled at the screen that much. Were you not killing that AT on purpose?!
21:05 - "I love it! So many positive waves!" #KellysHeroes
you should try combat Mission battle for Normandy. pretty similar type of game, though it's more of a tactics simulator rather than an RTS. anyway the best part about it is that a has a demo, so it's free to try.
This game reminds me a little about world of battles multiplayer-wise
Hey quill a bit random but do you remember aurora 4X? I really enjoyed that series and wouldn't mind you starting it again. Maybe not right now but just for some food for thought.
The M3's are half tracks - not trucks as the half tracks are more over the terrain mobile than trucks. The M3 is also armored, trucks, not so much...
Much much better than Paradox's presentation of the game.
When do we get more ??
If you plan to keep the ground you have, doesn't it make sense to field all the units you can during phases a and b? I think of it like a more "traditional" rts's economy and you are not making workers/gatherers on purpose. Just FYI, the "HT" in "M3 HT" is short for "half-track".
I'd like to see another game or two of this on higher difficulty.
Please tell me you can disable those order confirmations.
Wargame is a fucking fatastic RTS, hopefully this can keep up the same quality and feel. Just a few tips that may or may not carry over from Wargame.

I think if I want realistic I will stick with the Combat Mission games by Battlefront (specifically the newest one "Black Sea"). Love their games.
love the video and explaining u do man
This game looks very interesting
Wirbalwind was a anti air tank quill18 you sent the thunderbolt to fight an anti air tank
This game looks great but a possible sequel that took place in WW1 would be so cool
I can't believe it, you played as an American armored division and you didn't fire a single shot with a Sherman? Up the difficulty and play against the German armor division, let's get some proper tank battles going!

it is on easy mode...
This game is awesome! Can you pls make more videos maybe in higher difficulty
you could have said "wargame" with a WW2 setting and saved 1.5 videos :P
the dynamic front is pretty awesome though instead of the strongpoints that made fights always in the same area's
Pretty interesting one!
More games like this?
you have some pretty bad tunnel vision going on, man
you cant create the enemy team? would make for some fun custom battles
peeps are aware when complaining about it being slow that the game is set to slow speed most of the time
Dont use your mortar to try hitting trucks/any vehicle. They couldve been much useful killing the slow moving units. Or shell buildings.
¿Are you going to play Imperium Universalis? the mod for EU4 wich is focused in the ancient world of the greek and romans and the map is from spain to china.
was i the only one that was wondering if quill would ever remember the mortar on the right ? ( he never did of course )
Ehm. The endscreen tells me you lost 50 guys to friendly fire. I'd say invest in some trigger discipline training
Oh no quill! Dont call in your bombers on their AAA!
It's linear/spline interpolation the game. You can just see the spline calculations haha.
I rather enjoyed that. Looks like a great game.
Nice match !!!
Please do more!
any chance of a 1v1 against briastone?
Nice video~!
So is this basically Wargame with updated graphics and absence of guided missiles?
Gaizokubanou
No.
So what else is new? Is the biggest change removal of HQ to go with this dynamically generated ZoC?
Gaizokubanou
It is basically shown in the Video.
-Focus on Divisions, instead of whole armies
- Phase system with different income rates for every division
- frontline system instead of sectors to take
- overall slower pace
- maps are wide but not as deep, as in wargame
- and some other things...
Thanks~
Wargame Red Dragon at least was not scaled as whole armies, it was rather more Regiment/Brigade sized, at most, with Divisional/Corps support assets.
Map looks like google earth... Why hasnt anyone made an RTS on google earth yet
i believe they stitched together recon photos of Normandy from WWII to make the maps feel more authentic.
OrignalWolf Eugene studios always makes gorgeous maps. just look at the maps in wargame.
games look much better than wargame. Wargame was boring afther few hours this seems more interestring.
Awesome !
Is Tom Clancy's EndWar similar to this?
Hey Quill, I thought I'd try to help you out with some of the weapons and their ammo. You should have had some M8 Scotts, m8
so is this like a world war 2 take on the wargame games?
Moar! :)
More!
There was a similar game to this (besides RUSE) which was released few years ago but it had modern military stuff which i didn't liked, WWII feels much better while we are moving towards WWIII.
AmirB you are thinking of the wargame franchise. red dragon being the latest.
Oh Yes, Thank you.
More of this. Play Germany. Please. :)
Yay so they made a new wargame! Set in 1944
its the same game.
Next time you play a game where small soldiers shoot each other and mortars go off and it's full 3D there's a thing called "bullet time", you could - um - zoom a bit in and show what's happening.
And when you give orders to guys, perhaps show how they work out?

Can you make more videos.
I know those unit barks! Jesus, that's a bit jarring.
Moar.
Yay!
Acute angles lol.
