    if you break the command tape, a couple drops of ISO alcohol under the battery (i apply with a small brush) and a gentle pry gets the battery out VERY easy. the adhesive completely lets go. safer than heat, easier then removing motherboard, not messy.

    taking out the motherboard is absolutely the safest way of doing it but if you're discarding the battery and happen to rip the pull tab half way i use gentle heat, a credit card (never use any metal pry tools in case you puncture the battery) and spray the smallest amount of isopropyl alcohol under the battery to loosen the adhesive and only lever it up from the frame side.

    Thanks Justin! Wise advice. I would add that people should protect the screws better also.

      lol! Thanks. Then I can watch what you are doing rather than watching to see which way a screw will take off to. :)

    iPhone made a mistake here. The adhesive breaks too easily, do by trying to stop prying they have made it likely.

    Great video, great advice. I have struggled several times with these battery pull tabs. At least one of the tabs usually snaps. But hopefully with this info my struggles should be over. Many thanks.

    hey justin, thanks for the video.
    what about using little bit heat on the battery from the bottom of the phone? maybe easier for removing.

    • @TheArtofRepair
      @TheArtofRepair  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pedro my man! appreciate your question regarding using heat to remove a pull tape style battery! While it may help some to use a little bit of heat on a non pull type adhesives. It should only be used on the bottom of the frame, and never in direct contact with the battery. I would not recommend using heat on this style battery adhesive. Considering its removal design, heat would be unneeded.

    What about 5c/5s. There is no vibrator there to get more space. What do you do then ??

    • @TheArtofRepair

      Hey! I appreciate your comment bro! To deal with this issue, remove the charging port. Its the same concept as (10 minutes for the motherboard to save yourself purchasing someone a phone.) Anything that could cause unrecoverable damage to a phone, needs to have a safe method. Even if the safe method seems longer. When in reality it may take less time to do it this way from the start. This tactic comes straight from the auto industry.

      @@TheArtofRepair As a highly trained, fully certified shade tree mechanic, I can absolutely vouch for the truth of this. These days with car's engine compartments packed full of stuff, it's pretty rare that you will be able to unbolt and remove only the component that you need to replace, and this is also true of some suspension components. It almost always takes a lot more time to gain access to the component than to replace it. Sometimes the use of a Sawzall is required due to rust seized fasteners. Thanks for your excellent videos, and Kudos on spreading the word on Right To Repair!

    The 6s is easier because the haptic engine can be removed so easily. Not the case for any model prior to it. And removing the usb port assembly is time consuming, there's so many bits, screws, adhesives etc.
    Best solution is to invent a small roller, with a handle, that you can slip down at the bottom end of the battery. That way you can pull up instead of outwards, and not have it break.
    Currently I use a playing card and some patience to get it up if the tabs break.

    How about samsung phones? What technique do you use there?

  • @asfandiyar5829
    @asfandiyar5829 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Tbh i just get a blunt plastic and pry the corner of the battery. Then just pull the adhesive from that side. So far no explosion. Though your method is defiantly safer. Will use in the near future.

    If tabs broken isopropanol alcohol with pry will get the battery out, wd40 will do the job but make a mess!

    • @TheArtofRepair
      @TheArtofRepair  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes but then you break the cardinal battery removal rule. No prying. But since this video has come out. Iv come up with a new way. To use ethanol and Kevlar thread to go under the battery. The ethanol works better than the iso since it does not gum up the adhesive and just tends to break the adhesive bond. And the thread will go under the battery as if you were doing a screen refurb and the battery comes right out. Also if you put the device on a heat plate. This method will make large tablet batteries a breeze as well.
