Ozu's film "I was born,but.....",produced in 1932 is silent picture.
i like this film very much and surprisingly in this interview he said this title
as it's so meaningful word for his life.(as epitaph).
It was very interesting Aki's film "Juna"(1999) was monochrome and silent picture.I thought of the influence deeply in him.
By the way "I was born,but....",the title in Japanese is "Umarete wa mitakeredo","生まれてはみたけれど".

『風の中の雌鶏』の階段突き落とし、『宗方姉妹』の田中絹代が山村聰に何度も殴打されるシーン、『浮草』の京マチ子が中村鴈治郎にボコボコ殴られるシーンとか、暴力描写は小津もそこそこやっている。

Criterion Collection's Tokyo Story release has this as a bonus feature and it says:
Talking with Ozu, a forty-minute tribute to the director from 1993, featuring the reflections of filmmakers Lindsay Anderson, Claire Denis, Hou Hsiao-hsien, Aki Kaurismäki, Stanley Kwan, Paul Schrader, and Wim Wenders.
I would've guessed early 90's based on the design of that street car, but there's the more accurate information above.
