Regarding the squishiness of triceratops - I believe they could be be squished to the extent presented in the video; I don't think however they could regain their original shape.

Totally surreal hearing you guys talk about my Dinosauria Animated series here. I've been an loyal watcher of this series for like 7 or 8 years now, early "Chaotic Good" days. Glad you like the series, Steven! :D
And your rubeosaurus/styracosaurus video certainly had an influence on that first episode.

To answer why the space dinosaurs have space suits with toes: when I first started doing space dinosaurs, people commented pretty often on the boots. People like their space footwear. And since therapod means 'beast foot' I had to design something that showed off those dino digits.
Such an honor to have sent you that puzzle. Thanks again Steve and Liz.

while you were looking at Rexie from HR and went "Oh its signed!" my brain just went:
" -hmm. that's not very accurate, we don't have any fossil evidence for signatures on any of the non avian dinosaurs. and most of the scientific community agrees that they were not signed."

    • @kyleflanagan963
      @kyleflanagan963 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

To be fair, that is the sort of the thing that would only be preserved in soft tissue and we have very little actual trace fossils of such things, so there's no direct evidence to prove Dinosaurs weren't signed.
But to be fair, most scientists I've spoken too agree that is probably much more reasonable in early synapsids.

Advice on "Schleich." It is a German name, and in German it would be pronounced the second way you tried, where represents the "hard-H" sort of sound, specifically the "Ich-laut" variant (properly known as the voiceless palatal fricative). It sounded like you basically got the sound right, but if you need an explanation, English speakers tend to make this sound by accident when making an /h/ sound before a /y/ or /i/ sound in words like "huge," "heat." If you can feel the way you create a hissing friction as the /h/ comes closer to the top of your mouth (where /y/ and /i/ are articulated) then you understand what that sound is.
For English speakers who can't make the sound properly, it's usually approximated as a /k/ sound, like "Shlike."
Many German speakers do pronounce the sound in words like "Schleich" as closer to an English (ie a sound kind of in between the English SH-sound, and standard German Ich-laut), so approximating it as an SH-sound makes some sense, but unless that dialect takes over as standard probably the proper ich-laut or English approximate thereof is better.

12:54 There are dinos with the exact opposite, though - some troodontids and basal avialans have two sickle claws on each foot, with the middle toe remaining the only normal one. Like Balaur bondoc, which people first assumed to be a troodontid, but was eventually identified as a very early flightless bird (because Island Effect). I guess the middle toe is the most important for walking, so it's too important to be used as a weapon.

In regard to the mosasaur, about the worst thing you can say about it is that it has claws, which would not be seen on large animals that spend their entire lives swimming. depending on the species, the head could also probably be a bit pointier and tail fluke would be a bit more pronounced as well (probably like a shark or an ichthyosaur).
The chunkier design works for it though, as most marine animals had a layer of fat to help streamline them under water.

Hey, first of all, I really like your videos. Secondly, I was thinking about something and was wondering if you could tell me anything about it.
So, dinosaurs like velociraptor had teeth just like mammals, for example, whereas birds today have beaks. This led me to think that beaks are more of a recent development in terms of evolution. Then I remembered that dinosaurs like triceratops did have something like a beak, though, but they are actually less closely related to the birds of today.
What's going on there? Are beaks just a phenomenon that occurs in different species that have a certain diet/inhabit a certain ecological niche? Or is there another connection between triceratops' beaks and today's birds' beaks, that points to beaks being kind of a bird thing in general?

Does anybody know if Steve has played ARK? I would love to see his reaction to the Dinosaurs represented in that game to see if they're accurate or incorrect.

Well, that would be a massacre. Both because the game is frustratingly hard, and because the only dino that's even remotely accurate is the Carnotaurus.
