Sorry I know my comment was all over the place. Just wanted to put that out there about myself in case someone who may be suffering from an addiction knows that there is hope. I was the guy on the corner with a sign begging for money for my next fix. All I cared about was the next time I could poke myself with a syringe to inject heroin into my veins. I know not that way of life anymore. I no longer wake to a fix of heroin these days I wake to a fix but not of heroin anymore instead philosophy. And I thank you Stephen west for making it easy to get my fix of the good stuff. You don’t know how much good you do or who you could be saving by putting out these videos. I can’t thank you enough

Herman Hesse's "Siddhartha" is a short, highly enjoyable book that would be a great complement to Mr. West's presentation on the Buddha.

I came here looking to get caught up on a bunch of the philosophy that I missed in school. I saw this video, and as a practicing Buddhist, I thought I'd use this as a litmus test to see where your biases lay. I have to say you did a great job. Buddhism gets slammed and misinterpreted all the time, and you managed to pull of a pretty fair and even-handed approach.

I once had a dream I was a singer and in this garden I found a fruit that looked like a dark shinning orange with circular inscpritions on it, when I touched it it turned into a lotus flower, it was pink or white I cant remember. Since then I looked a bit more into the history of associations with the flower, just because.

It's amazing that eastern philosophy was already way ahead of Western philosophers in the sense they were already focusing on individual or the self and prospect of discovering nature of one's mind and discovering truths about nature of consciousness prior to thought. To this day..it's the highest philosophy and in a way, it's not even a philosophy. People have been discovering similar truths by doing psychedelics like Magic mushrooms or LSD and imagine, some cultures figured that shit out without use of those substances (supposedly). Even some of greatest Western philosophers based their greatest ideas on psychedelic experiences. And then it's just a matter of how impressively and from what angles you talk about the nature of experience. But the cash value still lies in bringing a change in subjectivity..still lies in discovering truths about nature of consciousness and no amount of theoretical philosophy can make up for it IMO as there have been philosophers who are considered great but have lived fairly miserable lives. Ultimately, if you don't look at your own mind and don't realize who you are and understand how your mind works (however you wanna phrase it), any amount of philosophy imposed from outside is next to worthless and makes you a slave to that outlook that's just not yours.

"Blood is thicker than water, but honey is thicker than blood" tells my thoughts simply on what family is to us. To some, they never had a family, and had to build one. To others, they did, until very early in their lives when they were betrayed by their family. To most, their family is their best friends that they take for granted. Taking a best friend for granted, in my opinion, is what family is.
What "for granted" here means, honestly, is a mystery to me. Maybe it's the sense of nostalgia.
Side note, I don't like the idea that all life is suffering. Rather than accepting the world as is, I think that making the world a better place is how we can find contentment and safety. This might line up best, within Buddhism, with the Navayana reinterpretation of Buddhism. Though I don't know much about it.

Great episode.just one correction about quote "universe run by horse for sometime"..in eastern religions like buddhism 'God' does not necessarily mean an omnipotent/monotheistic God. also does not necessarily mean they are powerful than humans. it's more like a state of reincarnation. you can find many stories of gods worshipping human/ascetics. Buddhism does not talk about an omnipotent god. I guess the idea of an omnipotent god does not really change Buddhist philosophy

As you rightly said that history gets muddy, I would like to speak about one of the most famous but flawed theory - aryan invasion theory. As a matter of fact, aryans or people from Georgia etc did not really come to India. In Hinduism, we believe that lord shiva lived in the mountain of Kailasa in modern day China and the descendants of Hinduism came from there. There were 7 sapt rishi or seven saints who started the lineage of people. The aryan and dravidian theory was highly popularized by the Britishers who wanted to divide the northern and southern part of the nation. Both the north and south Indian parts believe in the same gods and have same beliefs, although we have different languages and ways to do it. This is the beauty of Hinduism or सनातन धर्म which means a continuous religion. Because sanatana dharma is a very open religion, sects like Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism were born out of it.

" "I," was created by the thought of Gods and "Their," desire to allow all mortals to know that "They," are always with them: As humankind grows and seeks absolute independence from "Them," "They," will remain by their side, guiding them and directing them, in their growth to absolute "WISDOM," the way to "Their Essence" and the Elysium Fields. As you look out beyond the now, into the heavens, "I" will be there, guiding you and helping you know that "I," be visible or invisible, "My Essence," will guide you beyond all that is sensed in your reality. So, let it be now revealed to you that both "I" and "He," in mortal being, who speaks to you through the thoughts of children are but one. " Eleusis.
Let The Light within you guide you to the Elysian Fields entrance; your inner beauty is expected.
Seek me out: Amazon, Imagination is the way. Love is the ink; wisdom is the message.

All I am disappointed is that how come you have studied so much about Buddha his philosophy and didn't even said the name of the country he was born once.
It's Nepal not India not northeast India. It's NEPAL. This may not be a big of a deal. But I think it is. I really don't know why not hearing the name made me sad.

To say we are doing better individually in comparison to the past is absolutely incorrect. There are 9 billion people on this planet and there is no way for you to even gauge such a claim. Actual access to resources is limited and we are under full military control. We live in a giant zoo with invisible bars & one only has to attempt to leave their country of origin to see how visible the bars actually are. The size of your cage is quickly becoming the place you call home as we are presently in a forced mandated lockdown. I'm surprised you think we should appreciate such dominance over our lives or maybe you just don't see the reality of this.

This podcast was released in 2013 so there is no lockdown the picture then. Yup we aren't in a better position than our forefathers considering things you said yet we have so much more that we didn't have back in the day. You lose some, you gain some. There are no absolutes.
