That was a swing bridge before the stop lock ,got it on a bit of film back in1975 with a lot of kids getting a free ride when l operated it . The navigations in that area are very picturesque, good luck with the Tardebigge flight !
Oh wow, thank you for that info, glad you enjoyed the cruise. We didn’t go Tardebigge way this time, thought we’d save that for another time! Thanks Anthony! xx
Such a delightful episode, great scenery and I do love the commentary. We don't miss a thing because of your help. Amazed by the amount of Herons by the canals, great indication for fishermen. Don't get companies like, Bourneville/Cadbury any more where estates were built to encourage a workforce, this were the days or were they? Thank you both for the pleasant time aboard in the pair of your company!
Hi Nigel, so glad you enjoyed that lovely cruise, the scenery was just beautiful! We see herons on canals where the water is quite clear, which in this case, under that duckweed it was, the more murky water canals you don’t really see any. Lovely to have you onboard with us! Thanks Nigel! xx
Hey Guys, we get those afternoon thunderstorms a lot here in the heat of summer and the heat of the day apparently causes them to pop-up. They're loud and it rains big drops like crazy... for a few minutes. Then the sun comes back out and the humidity soars! You probably experienced the heat and humidity on your trip to Memphis. Sorry for commenting so late but we're getting ready to move into our new house and, as you can imagine, it's pretty hectic. Thanks for another one. Take care.
Hi Roger, yes you’re right we did! When we were getting off of the Mississippi Paddle Steamer in Memphis, the heavens opened and we had a huge thunderstorm, I believe it’s in the vlog lol, we got soaked! 🤪 Good luck with your house move! Thanks Roger! xx
WOW, that was a beautiful scene floating down the canal. The first thing that I thought of was all the fun we could have had as kids growing up along that canal. We would have slain dragons and rescued damsels by the score. Of course, that was 50 years ago before cell phones and computers when us kids had to use our imaginations. Keep the adventures coming.
Wow, your torch is amazing! I couldn’t believe how much light it gave in the tunnel!! It was a beautiful cruise until you hit the built up area. Such a shame there is so much graffiti now. I’m glad you found the chocolate shop - always focus on the priorities!! Have a wonderful weekend xx
It looked like a beautiful cruise!!! Glad you didn't meet another boat where the sign said keep to the centre with the row of moored boats!!!! The light on the trees at the end looked stunning!!! ❤
Hi guy's I'm with you Julie, "WOW" just stunning. England is so beautiful and seeing it through the locks is just perfect, Your videos are such a stress release for me and always have a calming effect. I'm with you Julie I would have been in that chocolate factory quick smart. My wife wont let me go down the chocolate isle in the shops,😥 and for some strange reason when she takes me shopping with her she always seems to spend twice as much.😂😂🤣🤣Great job guys, stay safe.👍🏻👍🏻❤❤🍫🍫🍫🍫🍫🍫
Hi Geoff, oh my goodness, you and Martin are so similar, when he comes shopping with me, there always seems to be this extra lot of chocolate that just ‘fell’ into the trolley! 😂😂🤣 So pleased you enjoyed the cruise, the scenery was just stunning wasn’t it! I was a tad worried that I had left too much in, but I just couldn’t cut any scenes out lol. Thanks Geoff! xx
This vlog, as you said Julie, the scenery was truly stunning! Such a great cruise today. And I love the sound of thunder. Cadbury!! Glad you didn't pass that up and that you came out with a little bag of chocolate!
I ain’t got a boat but love the channel. Bournville Model Village was the houses built for the workers rather than those you pointed out which are part of an area in Stirchley called “little London” because of the street names, Bond St, Oxford St and Regent St. The bit where you walked between The Rec and the factory is called The Birdcage. My Dad was a groundsman on The Rec back in the 1940’s. You was moored on Waterside, where there was unloading and stores off the canal for Cadburys. If yer ever that way again a walk around Bournville Village is worth it but sadly there’s no pubs in Bournville. Have fun.
The early canal vlog was stunning❤ Wouldn't scene "stills" make great jigsaw puzzles!! You would be hairless by the time you got a puzzle completed 😂 me thinks! Thank you Jan Adelaide P.S. McDonald's and Cadbury's yummy - yes please❤🤩
Ooh what a great idea! I like that, as you say, they would make lovely jigsaws! That cruise was definitely one of our favourites! And oh yes, can’t beat McDonalds and chocolate!! Lol 🤣 Thanks Jan! xx
Lovely filming again Julie, almost a year to the day we were moored towpath side opposite where you are at Bournville, the towpath was like a motorway with speeding cyclists. We had come up the Tardebigge flight which was a good workout for Alison !!!! again lovely scenery with the Malvern Hills in the distance. Unfortunately for us the Cadbury's shop was closed & I've not had any chocolate since (not a great fan anyway At present we are stuck south of Banbury on the Oxford due to flooding & a damaged weir, been here two weeks, but got everything close by so its not a great problem as the area is lovely as well. If you've never been down here its well worth visiting. Regards Mike and Alison nb. Sarah Kay.
Hi Michael, hope you and Alison are well! Yes, we were glad we were the opposite side, as that towpath was really busy! We really loved that cruise, it was so scenic! Hope the flooding subsides soon you can get moving again! 🤞Thanks Michael! xx
Some beautiful cruising along that canal guys. Thanks for sharing. The Cadbury factory and village reminds me of something similar in Claremont, a suburb of Hobart. In the 1920's Cadbury built a factory and more than 300 cottages for workers and their families. I remember a school excursion to the factory nearly sixty years ago...and I still vividly remember the smell! Cheers.
Wow, what a great memory for you Neil! Yes, the smell was lovely, and the chocolate tasted good too! 😜 That stretch of canal was just stunning, glad you thought so too! xx
Hi Cindy! So pleased to now have a name for you, other than Jalapeño Pepper! Lol re McDonalds, because we live on the canals, it’s not very often we get to be near take-aways, so when we see them, we can’t resist, especially Martin lol 😂 Wasn’t that canal special, I was lost for words, it really was stunning! Can’t wait to see your next painting, you’re so talented! Speak soon! xx
Hi, Julie and Martin! Today's vlog was amazing. The canals were stunning. As often as I've watched narrowboat vlogs, you'd think I'd have recognized some of the canal route. Maybe the algae threw me off?😅 Great maneuvering at the bridge. You had quite a cluster going on there. Love when Martin blasts the horn. I think he should hooter three successive blasts. Very distinctive noise! Safe travels!
Soooo much duck weed 😮 the approach to many towns and cities can be shocking by foot, car or boat, humans!! One of my fav journeys into Birmingham ❤ fab filming as always, stay safe ❤❤
Hiya matey! That cruise was just stunning, at one point I was lost for words, unusual for me lol 😂 We had a good time didn’t we, hope we see you soon! xx ❤️
Hi Martin & Julie, great vlog as always, absolutely stunning scenery as you meander down the canal. Ps. Your boat is beautiful. Have a fabulous weekend.
Hi Kerry, yes that first stretch of canal was just stunning, and then there was the contrast leading to Bournville lol. Like you say, variety is nice, if it was all the same it would be boring lol! Thanks Kerry! xx
Wonderful vlog! I will be rewatching this one as there was so much to see and your presentation was just perfect. Thank you for the temperature in Fahrenheit. I’m anxiously waiting for next weeks vlog and surprise! Take care 🤗❤️
Oh Donna, that’s a lovely thing to say, so pleased you enjoyed it, the scenery along that stretch was just stunning wasn’t it! You’re welcome, I’ll be converting the temperature all the time now, I feel bad that we hadn’t done it sooner! Thank you Donna! xx

If not, then you should be , as your two of the most consistent, informative and happy people on here. Martin handles the boat perfectly and you make a great team. I will have to wait to see .

Wow that’s is a beautiful canal we did this a few years ago now during in between lockdown etc We loved it then especially the locks at lapworth too ❤gorgeous 😊xx
Thank you for sharing its beautiful its such a lovely area your in I hoped to do the same before I got stage 3 cancer and had to move into a hospice so much for 50 years hard work !
Hi there, we’re so sorry to hear of your illness, hope our videos can help in some way. We try to show you the canals how we see them, some are scenic, some are more built up, but they all have their own beauty! Really pleased you are enjoying the vlogs, thank you so much for your lovely comment! xx
Glad you went into Birmingham that way. As you might remember, we came out down the Grand Union and having done it once; probably won't go that way again unless a specific need arises. The whole Stratford canal is one of the most beautiful (in my opinion). Like the Llangollen, but more countryside than hillside and a lot (and I mean lot) less boats. Feels like this must have been recorded ages ago as it feels ages since we passed you above Hatton.
Hi Alan, yes that stretch of canal was just stunning and we’re very glad we went that way! We are a little behind on the videos I’m afraid, this one was recorded on 11th August. Usually we run approx a month ahead of our vlogs to allow for editing etc, but we were put on a schedule (all will become clear in next week’s vlog 😜) and ended up cruising a lot more miles and visiting a lot more places a lot quicker than we normally would have, so have ended up quite a way behind. We can now relax again though, so will be able to catch up with ourselves over the next few weeks and get back on track! Thanks Alan! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB look forward to hearing your news. I gather a few are heading for Llangollen for the winter, if you’re in Nantwich/Middlewich area, let me know and I’ll pop over to say hello
Aww we’re not going that way this year, we’ve just made it to the Macclesfield, and we are staying on here and the Peak Forest canals for winter. We may go that way in the Spring! Would be lovely to have met up xx
What a gorgeous, deep woodsy vibe for the beginning of the cruise! A perfect canopy to travel under on a very warm summer day. It is so fun to watch you guys, I strain with you through the shallow waters, wonder at who (CRT) should be dredging the garbage from the canals to make it safe for you and, although it is pretty, the algae and pollen can sure make a mess and cause damage! Ooooh, Cadbury....❤
Hi Julia, it really was a beautiful stretch of canal! So glad you are enjoying watching our little videos. It would be lovely if they could dredge the canals a bit, to take some of the silt and rubbish away, but think it all boils down to a lack of money unfortunately. Didn’t the duck weed look pretty though! Thanks Julia! xx
Lovely cruise in a lovely place before you got to the town. I love outdoor murals but I really dislike graffiti. I really liked the close ups of the heron. Seems like he traveled with you for a while. The algae on the canal was so think in some spots. It looked like you could walk on it but I wouldn't suggest doing that! ❤
Hi Dorothy, the first part of that cruise was just stunning! Like you, I really don’t like graffiti, but unfortunately, as soon as you get near a large town or city it’s everywhere! We wish these little tykes would leave all the historic bridges and buildings alone, but it’s today’s society and nothing we can do about it 🤷♀️ That duckweed looked so pretty in places, but like you said, some parts were so thick it looked like we were travelling through grass! Thanks Dorothy! xx
I fear that if I was to visit the Cadbury's factory by boat the boat would be close to sinking afterwards. My late father in law had cacao trees behind his house here in Malaysia. I would love to take the tour to see the entire process through to the finished product. The tunnel you went through is 352 yards in the Nicholson's guide and on the wall over the exit as you came out.
@@JulieandMartinonRIB Yes, watchong from Malaysia with about 6 kg of chocolate in the fridge bought in England a month ago. It has to last until we visit again next year. (We usually get back about once a year.)
That lovely building is now the Birmingham Holistic Health Center. Would love to know what is was originally built as. As always, another lovely cruise.
Hi Julie and Martin, beautiful video as always and fantastic haul of Cadbury chocolate, best chocolate in the world! Belated birthday wishes to your son! Already looking forward to your next video, have a wonderful rest of your week. Lots of love and best wishes
i worked at cadburys years ago i use to eat the flakes i wasnt keen on anything else i did nights back in 1978 but thn you sick of the stuff when you work there.
Remarkable scenery there Julie and Martin, bravo! Awesome seeing those guillotine locks! I am researching, but we hear you referencing "black country." What exactly is black country ? Is it similar to a cultural and heritage park?
Hi Randy! The ‘Black Country’ got its name from the thousands of ironworking foundries and forges, plus the coal mines too. The smoke coated everywhere in thick black soot, and I mean everywhere, houses, grass, trees and people, so the areas were referred to by the term ‘Black Country’ this was around the 1840s. It’s a very industrial area, which includes ironworking, coal mining, nail making and glass making, and all transported by canal boats back in the day! It covers quite an area, Wolverhampton, Walsall, Dudley and Sandwell. Hope that all makes sense! Glad you enjoyed this one, the scenery was just stunning! Thanks Randy! xx
Haha, they don’t collect fees nowadays, but yes, a lot of the canals could do with dredging, but it all boils down to lack of funds for CRT 🤷♀️ Glad you enjoyed this cruise, it was stunning wasn’t it! Thanks! xx
@@kneaded9798 oh sorry, I thought you were referring to toll fees d’oh! 🤦♀️ My fault! Yes, the licence fees have gone up quite a lot, so yes, it would be good for them to do a bit more. Unfortunately, the Government cut back on their funding, so us boaters are now bearing the brunt of increased fees and reduced services 🤷♀️ xx
I live in East Tennessee which is one of the states hit hard by hurricane Helene, so having your vlogs are ready needed for peaceful and beautiful scenery. So calming and entertaining.
The begging part of the cruise looked like a bit of Narnia :) Even though the canals were built for industry, I don't appreciate seeing the trash and graffiti of the city sections. I know they must be there for the whole system to function but....yuck. Thanks as usual for the glimpse into your lives.
Hi there, yes, we much prefer the scenic views, but occasionally we have to go into a large town or city and like you, we really don’t like the graffiti, we often comment to each other … why, why would people deface buildings and bridges in their own towns, surely they can’t think that it looks nice 🤷♀️ We love seeing the old wharfs, bridges, and old factories as we got closer to Birmingham and the Black Country, but such a shame that things are left to rack & ruin. We do try to show everything, but don’t worry, we won’t linger on the bad. So pleased you enjoyed the first cruise, that stretch of canal was just stunning! Thank you! xx
Great vlog lovely thunder storm that looked a lot off chocolate why not lie on back watch shooting stars well poppy dog had a change in don't think she needs a op so going to try treatment that Dexter had most off his life better than spending £800 pounds on xray to be told she don't need op so will trust vet

Thanks Derek, sorry for the late reply it’s been very busy here, you’ll see why next week! xx
its a picture to see i agree
It was stunning! 🤩 xx
Thanks Dorothy! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB True, nothing to be done. They think it makes them "anarchists" or something... 😀
😂🤣 but instead they look like numpties! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB Yes, they do. 😊
I've said it before, gotta say it again....u got a great eye :)
Aww thank you Brian, so pleased you enjoyed this one! Thank you!
Hiya! Lol, the smell of chocolate was lovely! Wow, you’re watching from Malaysia, thank you! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB Yes, watchong from Malaysia with about 6 kg of chocolate in the fridge bought in England a month ago. It has to last until we visit again next year. (We usually get back about once a year.)
Oh wow, good luck making it last, especially with the festive season approaching! 🤣 Hopefully we’ll meet one day! xx
That lovely building is now the Birmingham Holistic Health Center. Would love to know what is was originally built as. As always, another lovely cruise.
Hi Dee, we did look the buildings up, but just can’t find out what they were originally, hopefully someone will know, thank you! xx
Hi Julie and Martin, beautiful video as always and fantastic haul of Cadbury chocolate, best chocolate in the world! Belated birthday wishes to your son! Already looking forward to your next video, have a wonderful rest of your week. Lots of love and best wishes
Aww thank you Edward, glad you enjoyed this one! Have a lovely week too! 😃 xx
Julie Martin what a stunning scenery on your cruise
It really was beautiful, we couldn’t believe that this was so close to a large city! So pleased you enjoyed it, thank you! xx
What a wunderfull world.
Aww thank you, it was a lovely scenic cruise! xx
great vlog cranking it on the cur keep up the great vlogs thanks lee
Thanks Lee, really glad you’re enjoying it! xx
i worked at cadburys years ago i use to eat the flakes i wasnt keen on anything else i did nights back in 1978 but thn you sick of the stuff when you work there.
Oh wow! Yes I bet if you’re with chocolate all day, you must get sick of it lol 😜 xx
Thanks Randy! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB Great information Julie, thanks a bunch. We kinda figured it might be something like that, something historic for sure.
Xx
Thank you Edward! xx
its birmingham no shock if theres rubbish every where sorry we missed you thats a drag
Aww it seems to be most towns and cities, certainly not just Birmingham! Birmingham centre was amazing! xx
That was so nice, very relaxing cruise x
Thank you Gail, so pleased you enjoyed it, the scenery was stunning! Thank you! xx
Another beautiful vlog. Looks like a busy canal, with all the fees collected on boats, you think some dredging would be done.
Haha, they don’t collect fees nowadays, but yes, a lot of the canals could do with dredging, but it all boils down to lack of funds for CRT 🤷♀️ Glad you enjoyed this cruise, it was stunning wasn’t it! Thanks! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB I thought licensing fees greatly increased on narrow boats? Maybe I got that wrong.
@@kneaded9798oh, so sorry you have been affected by hurricane Helene, hope you and your loved ones are all ok 🥰 xx
ha julie martin sorry we didnt know you was near us hello nikkie
Hi Derek & Julie, aww it’s a shame we didn’t know you were near xx
Hi Nicholas, we didn’t see any shooting stars, but did manage to get the Aurora! So glad that Poppy can try the treatment rather than having an operation, really hope it works! Thanks Nicholas! xx
Julie I have been trying to see what your necklace is since I started watching and have admitted defeat and please can you tell me I only wear silver jewellery to as I am allergic to yellow gold thank you
Hi Coral, my necklace is TCB (Taking Care of Business) I am a huge Elvis fan as you know and this was his motto. I will try to show it in a future vlog so you can see it properly. So pleased you are enjoying our vlogs, thank you Coral! xx
